Chapter 39 - No Way Back

For a few seconds after they returned, no one moved. The ground beneath their feet felt solid again, the air normal, and yet something was clearly wrong. The place where the portal had been was now empty, as if it had never existed at all. Jenny slowly turned back, hoping to see even the faintest sign of the ripple, but there was nothing. Just still air. The silence that followed felt heavier than anything they had experienced before.

Zoe was the first to react. She quickly checked her device, adjusting it again and again, but the readings made no sense. The energy they had been tracking was still there, but weaker now, distant and unstable. It was no longer something they could reach directly. Louis stepped closer, trying to help her stabilize the data, but even he could not hide his concern. The connection they had followed into that world had been broken. Not completely gone, but no longer accessible.

Stebin stepped forward, clearly frustrated. He looked at the empty space and demanded to know how they were supposed to go back now. Kevin did not have an answer this time. He understood the situation too well. The portal had not just closed. It had collapsed. Jake remained calm, but his silence said enough. This was not a simple problem they could fix quickly. Whatever they had crossed into was no longer open to them.

Jenny stood still, her thoughts racing. She remembered the way Elisa's presence had flickered, the way the world itself had reacted to them. This was not just about finding a way back. That place had its own rules, and they had broken something by staying too long. But even then, she did not feel like it was over. The connection was still there. Faint, but real.

She finally spoke, her voice quiet but steady. They were not done yet. The portal might be gone, but the energy still existed, and if it existed, then there had to be another way. Zoe slowly nodded, agreeing that the signal had not disappeared completely. It had only changed. That meant they still had a chance, even if it was smaller now. The others looked at each other, the frustration slowly turning into determination. They had lost their way back, but not their purpose. And this time, they would not stop until they found another path.
