The silence after the screen went black felt heavier than the gunfire that came before it.
Tyland stood still, the phone still in his hand, his reflection faintly visible on the dark screen. The message was clear.
Every move he made would cost someone.
Every choice would be watched.
Measured.
Punished.
Kael leaned against the wall, exhaling slowly. "Now you see it," he said. "There's no winning this the way you think."
Tyland didn't look at him.
"That's where you're wrong."
Elara's eyes narrowed slightly. "Then what are you thinking?"
Tyland finally turned, his expression calmer now but not softer.
Colder.
Focused.
"They want control," he said. "Information. Reactions. Patterns."
Kael nodded slightly. "That's how they stay ahead."
Tyland shook his head once. "No," he said. "That's how they think they stay ahead."
A pause.
Elara stepped closer. "Explain."
Tyland slipped the phone into his pocket. "We've been reacting to everything they do," he said. "Following their lead, even when we think we're resisting."
Kael frowned. "Because they're always one step ahead."
Tyland's gaze sharpened. "Then we stop playing their steps."
Silence.
Elara crossed her arms slightly. "You're talking about going off pattern."
Tyland nodded. "Exactly."
Kael let out a short laugh. "You think unpredictability is enough to beat people like them?"
Tyland didn't smile.
"No," he said. "I think becoming something they can't measure is."
That landed differently.
Elara studied him carefully now. "And what does that look like?"
Tyland's answer came without hesitation.
"We take something from them."
Kael's expression shifted. "You don't even know where they are."
Tyland's voice dropped slightly.
"But they know where we are."
Another pause.
Then it clicked.
"They're always watching," Elara said slowly.
Tyland nodded. "Which means they're always connected."
Kael straightened slightly. "You're thinking of tracing them."
Tyland shook his head. "Not tracing," he said. "Forcing them."
Elara frowned. "Forcing them to do what?"
Tyland's eyes darkened.
"To react."
Silence.
Because that was the one thing they hadn't done yet.
Kael pushed off the wall, his tone more serious now. "And how exactly do you plan to do that?"
Tyland took a step forward.
"We give them something they can't ignore."
Elara's voice lowered. "Like what?"
Tyland met her gaze.
"Fear."
The word settled heavily.
Kael shook his head slightly. "You're talking about attacking them without knowing who they are," he said. "That's not strategy that's chaos."
Tyland's expression didn't change.
"Exactly."
A long silence followed.
Elara looked at him carefully. "You're going to destabilize everything."
Tyland nodded once.
"They already did," he said. "I'm just finishing it."
Kael studied him for a moment, then let out a slow breath.
"You've changed," he said.
Tyland didn't respond.
Because this time
It was true.
Another vibration broke the moment.
All three of them looked at Tyland's pocket.
Slowly, he pulled out the phone again.
Another message.
But this time
No threat.
No video.
Just three words.
"We are watching."
Tyland stared at it for a second.
Then
He smiled.
Not slightly.
Not subtly.
Fully.
And that alone
Was enough to shift the balance.
Because for the first time
They weren't watching a reaction.
They were watching a move.
And they had no idea what was coming next.
