Chapter 20- One-Man Army (Part 1)
Violet's eyes flashed with a confused hint. She didn't know why, but she felt rather perturbed and yet also so curious. Is this the Rein she had always talked to on the phone as he went about his missions?
She hadn't truly thought about it as much lately… But Rein was a killer. He was killing people. Whether those people were good or bad wasn't relevant at that moment, because in the end, he takes lives. Yet, deep down, because of habit or because of how she felt about him, she had long forgotten about that fact.
She simply treated their missions as a side gig to the real, important matter, which is to hear his voice speaking to her through the earpiece and his cold jokes.
"You can't stay here."
Rein's voice snapped her out of her daze as she blinked.
"I'm going to try and pull that horde away from the base. If you truly want to help, then try to kill the rogue Undead who won't chase after me."
"What?! How are you going to do that?"
"I will figure something out." He said as he moved ahead.
"... You might die." She said as she clenched her fists. "You promised me that you wouldn't do anything that would put your life at risk."
It hasn't even been that long since Rein promised her, and yet he was already about to break that promise. As selfish as it was, Violet couldn't stop her frustration from rising.
"If I don't get them out of here… We both will die. If there is a world where one of us dies, it should be me. Maybe karma will finally catch up to me."
Then, without waiting, Rein dashed away, leaving the stunned Violet behind, staring at his back. His words resonated in her head like a ringing bell, her heart thumping loudly as her mind raced with a thousand thoughts. She couldn't even breathe for a second.
"Violet! Violet!"
Standing there, she didn't even hear the sound of a man rushing toward her.
"What the hell are you doing going out like this?" He asked as he grabbed her shoulder, trying to snap her out of her daze. However, the woman didn't seem bothered at all as she stared at Rein's back.
"Rein is…"
"Huh?"
"Rein is trying to attract the horde away from the base. We need to help him. No, we must help him." She said as she grabbed something from her pocket.
'It should be you? Don't go ahead and be a selfish bastard now!' She cursed.

Rein closed down the distance between him and the horde quickly. It was now a few hundred meters away from the base. The sound of gunshots echoed even louder as the soldiers tried to kill them before they could sweep the entire place clean.
"Fire!!!"
"Don't stop!! We need to kill them all!"
"Nothing… Nothing is working…" A soldier muttered with a pale face as he dropped his gun slowly. "Our bullets aren't doing anything…"
"Do we have another option? There is nowhere to escape! Just use all your bullets and shut up!"
"RAWR!!"
However, before the soldiers could even snap out of it, several figures emerged from the horde, moving fast toward them.
"C-Cats?!"
They were very large house cats, almost as big as tigers, except far more rabid-looking and terrifying, with blood covering their bodies. The panic immediately settled in as the soldiers aimed their guns and tried to shoot them.
But, the cats were very agile and nimble, dodging some of the bullets, while easily tanking the others.
"T-They're going to get inside!!!"
The cats leaped in the air as they got ready to pass the barricades.
"Run!!"
The soldiers felt their hearts sink to their stomachs as they turned around to leave the barricades and save their lives. However, they knew deep down that they were far too late to escape in time.
At that moment, everything seemingly stopped as a person appeared out of thin air. He moved so fast that he rivaled the cats easily.
*Swish* *BANG*
"Huh?"
Everyone looked behind as they saw something that completely blew their minds. A young man slammed his hand into the face of the mutated cat as he slammed it down violently. The monster hissed and screeched, but before it could do anything, the sword sank deep into its throat, killing it on the spot.
Rein pulled the blade out, drawing even more blood, and dashed toward the second cat like a flash. In his hand was a pebble that he aimed up and charged with his energy. It flew like a bullet, hitting the second cat right in the eye, making it lose its balance as it slammed into the barricades, knocking them down.
At the same time, the third cat was able to pass through as it slammed a soldier down and hissed at him.
"AHHH!! NO!!!! PLEASE!!!" The man tried to struggle, only for the cat to open its mouth wide and, with a swift move, bite his head cleanly off his shoulders. Then, it spat it out as it was ready to attack another soldier.
"No, you don't," Rein said, coldly as he slashed with his sword, cutting its tail. The creature cried in pain as it fell to the ground, rolling in pain.
Using that opportunity, he stabbed it in the side once, then twice, until it stopped moving.
Then, he turned around and looked behind him.
"Get the barricades on again. What the hell are you watching? Do you think this is a show?" He said loudly, his voice reverberating through the base, snapping the soldiers out of their daze.
'These useless idiots.' He cursed as he dashed out of the base again. At the same time, Rein stopped at one of the soldiers.
"I'm going to borrow this." He said as he grabbed one of the grenades tucked in his pockets and continued running straight toward the horde.
Pulling the safety pin, he threw the bomb in the heart of the horde. A second later, it exploded as several Undead were thrown in the air.
That was enough to catch their attention as they looked straight at Rein.
'That's right, focus on me you fools.' He thought to himself as he stopped and let the horde rush toward him.
Even though he was a single person, the sheer amount of Essence his body was exuding attracted the horde. He appeared like a very delicious meal for them. One that would make them way stronger if they could consume it.
Rein then started stepping backward slowly as he let them get closer and closer. The mutated animals took the lead of the horde as they tried to get to him. That was when he turned around and started running as he took a different road. Most of the horde chased after him as they diverged from the main road.
The sounds of their grunts and screeches thundered in the sky, shaking everything in their paths. Looking over his shoulder, he could see the faster monsters closing the distance down.
Grabbing rocks on the way, Rein started throwing them at the monsters, to make sure they remain behind him enough where the rest of the Unead won't be left behind. He cannot run too fast because that could risk the horde turning around and continuing to the base.
At the same time, Rein saw the mutated birds above the horde flying at a cruising speed and closing the distance. Their claws were open and ready to attack.
It didn't take long for some to start their descent, aiming for him. With fast and yet simple maneuvers, Rein sidestepped at the last moment as a pigeon slammed into the ground with its claws.
"You should be eating seeds, brainless bird."
But, before his joke could even land, the rest of the birds were already on the way down.
'This is going to be a long day… Fuck me.'
*BOOOOOM*
