Chapter 21 - Out of the Abyss??

Wind charged forward without slowing, ignoring the distant cries echoing from the kingdom's direction. King Ariston's booming voice rang out across the field, filled with desperate hope.

"Kairo! Leonhart!"

The horse didn't even glance toward the approaching figures. It kept running straight past the border, deeper into what should have been safe territory.

Kairo's small body jolted with every stride, his arms wrapped tightly around Leonhart.

"Wait... what? Wind, stop! That's the King! That's home!"

Wind's voice echoed calmly in his mind.

"It is an illusion. How I knew? We horses are able to detect humans... and ghosts."

Kairo's heart clenched. The relief he had felt only seconds ago shattered into fresh terror. The golden light, the white towers, the familiar scent of the Land of Harmony — none of it was real. The monster had crafted one final, cruel deception.

The "kingdom" behind them began to distort. The towers melted like wax. The starry sky turned blood-red. The ground beneath Wind's hooves rippled as if the illusion itself was breaking apart.

Kairo's breath came in short, panicked gasps.

"Then... where are we really going...?"

Wind didn't answer with words. Instead, the horse poured on even greater speed, weaving through the last remnants of the cursed forest. Real trees now — twisted, dark, and alive with malice. Pale creatures lunged from the shadows, claws outstretched. Invisible blades whistled past them, one slicing a shallow cut across Kairo's arm.

Kairo gritted his teeth, pressing Leonhart closer to his chest.

Just hold on... Please, just hold on...

The monster's roar grew louder behind them, closer than ever. Its presence pressed against Kairo's back like icy fingers. He could almost feel its breath on his neck.

Wind suddenly veered sharply to the left, leaping over a chasm of writhing roots. For one terrifying second, they were airborne — the abyss yawning beneath them. Kairo's stomach dropped. Leonhart's limp body shifted dangerously in his arms.

They landed hard on the other side. Wind never broke stride.

The forest began to thin again. This time, the light ahead felt different — warmer, cleaner, carrying the faint scent of blooming flowers and fresh grass instead of rot and iron.

Kairo's eyes widened.

The real border.

Wind burst through the final line of trees.

Real sunlight washed over them. The air changed instantly — rich with oxygen, gentle and alive. In the distance, the true white towers of the Land of Harmony rose proudly against a sky filled with brilliant stars, even in daylight. The kingdom's banners fluttered in the breeze.

This time, it was real.

Wind slowed to a trot, breathing heavily but steady. Kairo slid off the horse's back on trembling legs, carefully lowering Leonhart onto the soft grass.

Tears blurred his vision as he collapsed beside his friend.

"We... we really made it..."

His small body shook with exhaustion and relief. The pain in his knee, the phantom wound on his neck, the months of torment — everything crashed over him at once. He curled protectively around Leonhart, sobbing quietly.

"Leonhart... we're home... You did it... We both did it..."

From the direction of the capital, shouts rang out — real voices this time. Guards, nobles, and then the unmistakable towering form of King Ariston leading the charge.

"Kairo...! Leonhart...!"

The King's voice cracked with raw emotion he rarely showed.

Kairo looked up weakly, a tired but genuine smile breaking through the tears on his dirt-streaked face.

They had survived the abyss.

They were finally, truly home.

The grand gates of the kingdom loomed ahead, sunlight glinting off the colorful banners fluttering in the breeze. Kairo and Leonhart walked side by side, their small nine-year-old forms moving with quiet steadiness despite everything they had endured.

"So… one year of agony," Kairo muttered, a small, bitter smile tugging at his lips. "And now we're back to being nine years old. Feels… strange, doesn't it?"

Leonhart chuckled softly, trying to shake off the lingering shadows in his eyes.

"Yeah… but we survived it. That's what matters. And only one year has passed. I hope our friends and family are doing well."

Kairo glanced toward the distant palace, his expression softening.

"Our parents… they must be worried sick right now. We'd better hurry."

Leonhart nodded, his usual stoicism giving way to a rare warmth in his voice.

"Let's go. It's been too long."

As they approached the palace, the grand doors swung open. The King and Queen rushed forward, their faces flooding with overwhelming relief. But the moment their eyes fell on Leonhart's pale, unsteady form, that relief twisted into sharp worry.

The Queen's eyes widened in horror.

"Leonhart… you're hurt!"

Leonhart swayed on his feet, the hidden wounds from the forest finally catching up to him. His face was ashen, and a fresh trickle of blood stained his clothes where the trap had struck him.

The King's powerful frame tensed. He moved instantly, scooping Leonhart into his massive arms with surprising gentleness.

"Medics! Now!" the King bellowed, voice booming across the courtyard.

Guards and healers rushed forward at once. The royal medics carefully took Leonhart from the King's arms and placed him on a stretcher, their faces grim as they examined the injuries. Kairo stayed close, his small hand gripping Leonhart's limp one.

"He protected me…" Kairo whispered, voice cracking. "Please… save him."

The Queen pulled Kairo into a tight embrace, tears streaming down her cheeks, while the King walked beside the stretcher, his jaw clenched tight with worry.

They were rushed straight to the palace hospital wing. The medics worked quickly, cleaning wounds, applying healing herbs and magic, and stabilizing Leonhart's condition. Kairo refused to leave his friend's side, sitting beside the bed with exhausted, red-rimmed eyes.

Hours later, as the sun began to set, Leonhart's eyes finally fluttered open. He blinked slowly, taking in the clean white sheets and familiar faces around him.

The Lionhart leaned forward, relief washing over his stern features while in the distance her mother was crying.

"Leonhart… you're awake."

Leonhart's voice was hoarse but steady.

"Father… Mother… I'm sorry for worrying you."

His parents rushed to his bedside, tears flowing freely as they held his hands. His childhood friend stood nearby, eyes glistening with unshed tears.

Kairo, who had been dozing in the chair beside the bed, jolted awake at the sound of Leonhart's voice. He leaned forward, a tired but genuine smile breaking across his face.

"You idiot… you scared me half to death,"

Kairo said softly, voice thick with emotion.

"Don't ever do that again."

Leonhart managed a weak chuckle, wincing slightly from the pain.

"Couldn't let you have all the glory… could I?"

The Queen smiled through her tears, gently brushing Kairo's messy hair.

"Both of you… you've been through so much. Rest now. You're safe. You're home."

The King placed a large, reassuring hand on Leonhart's shoulder.

"You fought bravely, my boy. Both of you did. The kingdom is whole again because you returned."

Kairo looked around at the worried yet loving faces surrounding them — the King, the Queen, Leonhart's parents, and the friends who had gathered quietly outside the room. His chest swelled with a warmth he hadn't felt in a very long time.

They were hurt.

They were exhausted.

But they were finally home.

"My child! You're safe!"

The King enveloped Leonhart in a powerful hug, his massive arms trembling slightly.

"I feared the worst... but you two... you've returned."

Kairo and Leonhart offered faint smiles, their hardened expressions hiding the horrors they had faced.

"We're fine, Father. Mother,"

Kairo said softly.

"We're stronger than ever... don't worry."

The two friends exchanged a quiet glance, a silent promise passing between them. Whatever came next, they would face it together.

They stepped fully into the warmth of the kingdom, where familiar faces, laughter, and the comforts of home awaited them after a year of relentless suffering.

As they moved deeper into the palace courtyard, the atmosphere shifted. Guards, nobles, and villagers parted, sensing something monumental had returned.

Beside them, his childhood friend approached, her small hands clasping his arms.

Meanwhile, gentle hands touched Kairo's shoulders. He looked up to see Liana, Ayaka, and even the King and Queen closing in, along with little Princess Aria. All his friends — Daichi, Renji, Akio, Hina, and Mika — rushed forward, enveloping both boys in a massive group hug.

Kairo's chest swelled with overwhelming emotion. Tears pricked at his eyes as he tried to hold them back.

"I... I'm fine," he said softly. "Thanks to all of you. I... I won't ever let anything harm our kingdom again."

Liana and Ayaka smiled through their own tears.

"We believed in you, Kairo... and now you're back," they whispered.

Akio's eyes were wet as he grinned widely.

"Hey, you're back! We will have a campfire just as we promised!"

Daichi, even his usually lazy expression replaced by tears, laughed shakily.

"Yeah, we will play memory games. You beat me so many times — I'll beat you for sure now, Kairo and Leonhart. We'll spar with swords afterwards!"

Renji cried openly, voice thick with emotion.

"Hey, it was my idea... well yeah, we will work hard and improve together."

Mika and Hina were both sobbing happily.

"Well, Kairo and Leonhart, I will make cake for you. We will make it together!" Mika said.

"Yeah, I will make you bracelets and chains of flowers. It suits you!" Hina added.

Kairo and Leonhart smiled warmly.

"Yeah... I missed you all so much. Every single day,"

Kairo said, voice cracking slightly.

Leonhart, usually the silent one, simply gave a soft, genuine smile, his eyes shining with quiet happiness at finally being reunited with everyone.

Even after everything, the kingdom felt whole again.

And now, the two young heroes stood ready to protect it — stronger not just in body, but in spirit.

The kingdom was alive with energy. Banners fluttered from every tower, colorful lanterns hung along the streets, and the scent of roasted meats and sweet pastries filled the air. News of Kairo and Leonhart's return had spread like wildfire, and the people were eager to celebrate.

In the palace courtyard, a grand stage had been set. Musicians played lively tunes while dancers twirled, their movements reflecting the kingdom's overflowing joy. Children ran around laughing, pointing at the two young heroes as if legends had stepped out of stories and into their midst.

Kairo and Leonhart, still adjusting to their nine-year-old bodies, walked through the crowd. Nobles, villagers, and friends alike bowed and cheered. The King stepped forward, his voice booming with pride.

"Today, we celebrate not just the return of my son Kairo and my loyal friend Leonhart," he announced, "but the courage, strength, and unwavering spirit that they embody!"

Applause and cheers erupted, shaking the palace walls. The Queen approached, holding a tray of golden goblets filled with sweet juice.

"To Kairo and Leonhart!" she toasted, her eyes glistening with happy tears.

Liana and Ayaka hugged Kairo tightly, laughing through their tears. Leonhart was surrounded by his parents and childhood friend, each one overjoyed to see him safe. All his friends played around them, pulling both boys into games and laughter.

Kairo looked around, feeling the warmth and relief radiating from everyone.

"It's... amazing," he whispered to Leonhart. "After everything we suffered, this... this feels like paradise."

Leonhart nodded, a rare, soft smile breaking through his usually stoic expression.

"Yeah... we survived. And now, we celebrate together with everyone we care about."

As the sun set and lanterns cast a golden glow across the kingdom, laughter, music, and the clinking of goblets filled the air. For the first time in over a year, Kairo and Leonhart could truly feel the peace and happiness of home.
