Chapter 9 - The Cave of Reflections

Tidebound: The Great Sea Adventure

Chapter 9: The Cave of Reflections

Darkness.

That was the first thing Kael felt.

Not the kind that scared him—but the kind that wrapped around him quietly, like the ocean depths.

Then came the sound.

Drip… drip… drip…

Water.

Kael's eyes slowly opened.

The first thing he saw was stone.

Rough, uneven, dimly lit by a faint blue glow coming from somewhere deeper inside.

"…Where am I…?" he muttered weakly.

His body felt heavy. Every muscle ached, like he had pushed himself far beyond his limits.

Which… he had.

"You're awake."

Lyra's voice came from nearby.

Kael turned his head slightly and saw her sitting against the cave wall, arms crossed, watching him.

"You passed out," she added. "Right after taking down the Mistbeast."

Kael let out a weak breath. "…Did I win?"

Lyra smirked faintly. "Barely. But yes."

Kael closed his eyes again for a moment, relief washing over him.

"I thought… I was done for."

"You were close," Lyra said bluntly. "If you lost control for even a second longer, the backlash from your power could've crushed you."

Kael winced.

"…Good to know."

He slowly pushed himself up, leaning against the wall.

That's when he noticed it.

The sound of water.

Not just dripping.

Flowing.

Constant.

Calm.

"What is this place?" he asked.

Lyra glanced deeper into the cave.

"I found it while you were unconscious. It wasn't on the surface paths."

Kael frowned. "Hidden?"

"Seems like it."

Kael stood carefully, his legs still shaky.

"Let's check it out."

Lyra raised an eyebrow. "Already?"

Kael gave a small smile. "After everything we've seen on this island… you think I'm going to ignore something like this?"

Lyra chuckled softly. "Fair point."

They moved deeper into the cave.

The air grew cooler, and the faint blue glow became stronger.

The walls were smooth in some places, rough in others, as if shaped by water over a long time.

Then—

They reached the source.

A pool.

Perfectly still.

Perfectly clear.

And glowing.

Kael stopped in his tracks.

"…This again."

Lyra's eyes narrowed. "It feels similar to the stream, doesn't it?"

Kael nodded slowly.

"Yeah… but stronger."

Much stronger.

The surface of the pool shimmered faintly, like it was alive.

Kael's chest tightened.

"…It's calling me."

Lyra didn't stop him this time.

"Then don't ignore it."

Kael stepped forward.

His reflection stared back at him from the water.

But something felt off.

It wasn't just him.

He reached out.

And touched it.

The world shifted.

Kael stood in darkness again.

But this time—

It wasn't empty.

Water surrounded him.

Not violently.

Not chaotically.

But gently.

Like it was holding him.

"…You returned."

The voice echoed around him.

Deep.

Ancient.

The same one from before.

Kael's eyes widened.

"You…!"

The water rippled.

"You have taken your first steps."

Kael looked around.

"What is this place?"

"This is memory."

The answer came instantly.

"Not yours."

A pause.

"…The ocean's."

Kael's breath caught.

"The ocean… remembers?"

"All things that flow… leave traces."

The water shifted, forming faint images around him.

Battles.

Ships.

Storms.

People.

"So much has been lost… and yet, it remains."

Kael clenched his fists.

"That vision I saw before… that person…"

"The one who commands the tide."

The voice confirmed it.

"They are not unique."

Kael's heart pounded.

"…There are more?"

"Once."

The word echoed.

Heavy.

"…There were many."

Kael felt a chill.

"What happened to them?"

Silence.

Then—

"They were erased."

The water around him trembled.

Not violently.

But… sorrowfully.

"Why?" Kael asked.

The voice didn't answer directly.

Instead—

"Power that shapes the sea… invites those who fear it."

Kael frowned.

"…So they were hunted?"

No response.

But the meaning was clear.

Kael looked at his hands.

"…And me?"

The water stilled.

"You walk the same path."

Kael's chest tightened.

"But I'm not like that… I can barely control it."

"Power grows."

The voice said calmly.

"Choice defines it."

Kael fell silent.

Choice.

That word echoed deeply.

"Why show me this?" he asked.

The water slowly receded.

"Because you listened."

A pause.

"And because you did not run."

The world began to fade.

"One day…"

The voice echoed faintly.

"You will stand where they once stood."

Kael's eyes widened.

"What does that mean—?!"

Darkness.

Kael gasped as he snapped back to reality, falling backward from the pool.

Lyra caught him before he hit the ground.

"Easy," she said. "You went under for a second."

Kael stared at the glowing water.

"…It's not just power."

Lyra studied him. "What did you see?"

Kael hesitated.

Then—

"History."

Lyra didn't speak.

But her expression said everything.

Kael slowly stood again.

His body still ached.

But his mind—

Was clearer than ever.

"They weren't just legends," he said quietly. "They were real."

Lyra nodded slowly.

"I figured as much."

Kael looked at his hand.

The Tide Binding pulsed softly.

Steady.

Alive.

"…Then I need to get stronger."

Lyra smirked.

"Good. Because Mistcliff isn't done with you yet."

Kael looked back at the glowing pool one last time.

The cave felt quiet again.

Normal.

But he knew better now.

This world was deeper than he thought.

The ocean wasn't just water.

It had memory.

History.

Power.

And somehow—

He was connected to all of it.

As they left the cave, the mist outside shifted gently.

The island watched.

Silent.

Patient.

And far beyond the horizon…

The sea stirred.
