Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 — The Path That Was Never Meant to Open

The silence after Kraven left felt unnatural.

Not peaceful.

Not safe.

Just… empty.

Arin stood on the platform for a few seconds longer, staring at the golden sphere above him. It still pulsed gently, like a heartbeat that refused to stop.

Waiting.

Watching.

Trusting him.

That part bothered him the most.

"…I don't like that it trusts me," he said quietly.

Maya stepped beside him.

"It doesn't trust you," she replied. "It recognizes you."

Arin glanced at her.

"That doesn't make it better."

The golden light reflected faintly in his eyes as he looked up again.

"…That thing could've changed everything."

"Yes," Maya said.

"And I almost opened it."

"But you didn't."

Arin exhaled slowly.

"Yeah."

But the weight of that almost stayed with him.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Real.

He stepped off the platform.

The moment his feet touched the ground—

The chamber shifted.

Not physically.

But something changed.

The air grew colder.

The golden glow dimmed slightly.

Arin frowned.

"…Did you feel that?"

Maya nodded.

"Yes."

The shadow figure stepped forward again, emerging from the darkness like it had never truly left.

"You delayed them," it said.

Arin crossed his arms.

"Yeah, that's kind of what I was going for."

"But not stopped them."

"Also aware of that."

The shadow tilted its head slightly.

"You are learning."

Arin sighed.

"Everyone keeps saying that like it's a good thing."

Maya stepped forward.

"What happens now?"

The shadow turned slowly.

Facing deeper into the darkness beyond the chamber.

"The path continues."

Arin groaned softly.

"Of course it does."

He looked past the platform.

The golden path had returned.

But this time—

It didn't just continue forward.

It split.

Two directions.

Arin blinked.

"…Okay, that's new."

Maya stepped closer.

Her eyes narrowed.

"A split path…"

"Yeah," Arin said. "And I have a very bad feeling about this."

The left path glowed brighter.

Stable.

Familiar.

Like the paths they had followed before.

The right path—

Was dimmer.

Unstable.

Flickering between gold and something darker.

Arin pointed.

"Let me guess. One is safe, the other is definitely not."

The shadow spoke.

"One leads forward."

Arin waited.

"…And the other?"

Silence.

Arin sighed.

"Of course."

Maya studied both paths carefully.

"This isn't random," she said.

Arin looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

"It's a test."

Arin let out a small laugh.

"Everything is a test now."

"Yes," Maya said. "But this one is different."

"How?"

She pointed to the right path.

"That one… feels wrong."

Arin nodded.

"Yeah, I got that part."

"But it's also calling to you," she added.

Arin froze slightly.

"…What?"

Maya looked at him.

"You felt it too, didn't you?"

Arin didn't answer immediately.

Because she was right.

There was something about that darker path.

Something pulling at him.

Not like the golden light.

Not warm.

Not guiding.

But still…

Calling.

"…Yeah," he admitted quietly.

Maya's expression tightened.

"That's not a good sign."

Arin scratched the back of his head.

"Nothing in this place is a good sign."

The shadow spoke again.

"You must choose."

Arin blinked.

"Wait, now?"

"Yes."

"No pressure or anything."

Maya stepped closer to him.

"Think carefully," she said. "The left path is stable. It's safer."

Arin looked at it.

The glow was steady.

Predictable.

Then he looked at the right path.

Flickering.

Unstable.

Unknown.

"…And that one?" he asked.

Maya didn't hesitate.

"Dangerous."

Arin nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

Silence stretched between them.

Arin stared at both paths.

His mind raced.

Logic said go left.

Safe.

Controlled.

Expected.

But something deeper—

Something instinctive—

Was pulling him right.

He didn't understand it.

Didn't trust it.

But he couldn't ignore it either.

"…This is a bad idea," he muttered.

"Yes," Maya agreed.

Arin looked at her.

"…But?"

She hesitated.

"…But you're going to do it anyway."

Arin smiled slightly.

"Yeah."

He stepped toward the right path.

Maya grabbed his arm.

"Arin."

He looked at her.

"…I know."

"No, you don't," she said firmly. "You don't know what's down there."

"I know," he repeated.

"Then why?"

Arin glanced at the path again.

"…Because it's calling me."

Maya's grip tightened slightly.

"That's exactly why you shouldn't trust it."

Arin nodded.

"Yeah… probably."

He gently pulled his arm free.

"But if this whole thing is connected to me… then maybe I need to understand it."

Maya didn't like that answer.

But she didn't stop him again.

"…Then I'm coming with you."

Arin smirked.

"Of course you are."

They stepped onto the right path.

The moment they did—

The golden light flickered violently.

The air changed instantly.

Colder.

Heavier.

The path behind them disappeared.

Arin stopped.

"…Okay, I officially regret this."

Maya looked back.

The other path was gone.

"…No turning back."

"Yeah, I noticed."

The shadow did not follow them this time.

It remained at the split.

Watching.

Silent.

Arin frowned.

"…That's not suspicious at all."

Maya looked forward.

"Stay focused."

They moved deeper into the unstable path.

The walls around them shifted.

Not physically—

But visually.

Like shadows moving where there shouldn't be any.

Arin's chest began to feel strange again.

Not warm this time.

Cold.

Sharp.

"…I don't like this feeling," he said.

Maya nodded.

"Neither do I."

The path grew narrower.

Darker.

The flickering light barely held back the shadows.

Then—

The voice returned.

But not the same one.

Not calm.

Not guiding.

This one was different.

Distorted.

Broken.

"Why… did you come…"

Arin froze.

"…That's new."

Maya looked at him.

"What is it saying?"

"It… sounds wrong," Arin said.

The voice echoed again.

"You should not be here…"

The shadows around them moved more aggressively now.

Stretching.

Twisting.

Almost reaching.

Arin took a step back.

"…Yeah, I'm starting to agree with that."

Maya pulled out her weapon.

"Stay close."

The path ahead twisted sharply.

Then opened into a smaller chamber.

Unlike the others—

This one was completely dark.

No golden light.

No glow.

Nothing.

Arin stopped at the edge.

"…Nope."

Maya looked at him.

"Nope?"

"Yeah. That's a hard nope."

The voice whispered again.

"Enter…"

Arin shook his head.

"I don't trust that voice at all."

Maya took a cautious step forward.

"We don't have another option."

Arin sighed.

"Why is that always the case?"

They stepped inside.

The moment they did—

The darkness closed in behind them.

The entrance vanished.

Complete blackness surrounded them.

Arin couldn't see his own hands.

"…Okay," he said slowly. "This is definitely the worst one so far."

Maya's voice came from somewhere nearby.

"Stay calm."

"I am calm," Arin replied.

A pause.

"…Okay, I'm not calm."

The air felt different here.

Thicker.

Heavier.

And then—

Something moved.

Close.

Very close.

Arin froze.

"…Maya."

"I hear it," she whispered.

The voice returned.

Right beside him.

"You chose wrong…"

Arin's heart pounded.

"…Yeah, I'm starting to think that too."

Then—

A faint red glow appeared in the darkness.

Two points.

Eyes.

Watching him.

Not one pair.

Multiple.

All around them.

Arin's breathing stopped.

"…That's… not good."

Maya stepped closer to him.

"We're surrounded."

The voices whispered together now.

Broken.

Angry.

"You should not be here…"

"You do not belong…"

"You will break…"

Arin clenched his fists.

The golden light inside him flickered weakly.

Struggling.

"…Okay," he said quietly.

"This is officially bad."

The eyes moved closer.

The darkness shifted.

Something was coming.

Something wrong.

And for the first time since this all started—

Arin felt it clearly.

Not confusion.

Not fear.

But certainty.

They had made the wrong choice.

And the chapter ends with Arin realizing…

Some paths don't lead forward.

They lead to something waiting in the dark.
