Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 — The Voices in the Dark

The red eyes didn't blink.

They hovered in the darkness, unmoving at first—just watching.

Waiting.

Judging.

Arin stood completely still, his breath shallow, his body tense. He couldn't even see his own hands anymore. The darkness had swallowed everything.

Except those eyes.

"…Maya," he whispered.

"I'm here," she replied quietly, somewhere to his left.

"Tell me you see them too."

"I do."

"…Good. I thought I was losing my mind."

A low whisper echoed around them.

Not from one direction.

From everywhere.

"You chose wrong…"

"You walked where you should not…"

"You carry light… but you walk in shadow…"

Arin clenched his fists.

"Okay, seriously," he muttered, "who are you people?"

No answer.

Just more whispers.

More movement.

The red eyes began to shift.

Slowly.

Closing in.

Maya raised her weapon, though she clearly couldn't see where to aim.

"Stay behind me," she said.

Arin gave a quiet, nervous laugh.

"I can't even see behind you."

The air grew colder.

Heavier.

Harder to breathe.

The golden light inside Arin flickered weakly.

Not like before.

Not strong.

Not stable.

It was… struggling.

"…Why isn't it working?" Arin whispered.

Maya frowned.

"What?"

"My power," he said. "It feels… blocked."

The whispers grew louder.

"Light does not belong here…"

"It weakens…"

"It breaks…"

Arin's chest tightened.

"…That's not good."

Suddenly—

One of the red eyes lunged forward.

Fast.

Too fast.

Maya fired instantly.

A blue blast shot into the darkness—

And hit something.

A shape flickered into view for a split second.

Tall.

Twisted.

Not human.

Then it vanished again.

Arin flinched.

"…What WAS that?!"

"Don't stop moving," Maya said.

"Moving where?! I can't see anything!"

Another set of eyes rushed toward them.

Arin reacted instinctively.

He raised his hand—

The golden light flared—

But weakly.

It barely pushed the shadow back.

Arin stumbled.

"…Okay, that's really not good!"

The shadows began circling them now.

Faster.

More aggressive.

The whispers turned sharper.

Angrier.

"You do not belong…"

"You should not exist…"

"You will break…"

Arin shook his head.

"Yeah, I'm not liking the attitude here."

Maya stepped closer to him.

"We need to get out."

"Great idea. Any suggestions HOW?"

She didn't answer.

Because she didn't know.

The darkness shifted again.

This time—

Closer.

One of the shadow figures emerged partially into view.

Its form twisted unnaturally.

Long limbs.

No clear face.

Just those glowing red eyes.

It reached toward Arin.

Slowly.

Like it knew he couldn't escape.

Arin stepped back.

"…Nope."

The golden light flickered again.

Barely responding.

The shadow moved closer.

"Your light fades…"

Arin clenched his teeth.

"Yeah? Well… it's still here."

"Not for long…"

The shadow lunged.

Arin threw his hand forward—

The golden light burst out—

But instead of pushing the shadow away—

It shattered.

Like glass.

Arin's eyes widened.

"…What?!"

The light broke apart into small fragments—

Just like the ones from the broken chamber before.

Floating.

Fading.

Weak.

Maya stepped forward, firing again.

The blast slowed the shadow—

But didn't stop it.

"Arin, focus!" she shouted.

"I AM TRYING!"

The whispers grew louder.

Overlapping.

Chaotic.

"You cannot control it…"

"You are not ready…"

"You will lose it…"

Arin dropped to one knee.

His chest burned.

The warmth was gone.

Replaced by something cold.

Something heavy.

"…It's draining me…" he said.

Maya grabbed his arm.

"Don't let it!"

"Very helpful!"

The shadow reached him—

Its hand almost touching his chest—

When suddenly—

A different voice cut through the darkness.

Clear.

Sharp.

"Enough."

Everything froze.

The shadows stopped moving.

The red eyes flickered.

The whispers went silent.

Arin blinked.

"…That's new."

A faint golden glow appeared in the distance.

Small at first.

Then growing.

Brighter.

Stronger.

The darkness pulled back slightly.

Not willingly.

Forced.

The glow approached.

And with it—

A figure.

Not a shadow.

Not twisted.

Human.

Or at least… close.

Arin squinted.

"…Who is that?"

Maya stepped in front of him slightly.

"I don't know."

The figure stepped closer.

The golden light around it pushed the darkness away.

The shadows retreated.

Reluctantly.

The red eyes faded one by one.

Until only silence remained again.

Arin exhaled slowly.

"…Okay, I did NOT expect backup."

The figure stopped a few meters away.

Its face was still partially hidden by the light.

But one thing was clear—

It was looking directly at Arin.

"You should not have come here," it said.

The voice was calm.

Controlled.

Familiar.

Arin frowned.

"…Why does everyone keep saying that?"

The figure stepped closer.

The light revealed more of its form.

A man.

Tall.

Wearing a long coat.

Not red.

Not dark.

Something in between.

Maya tightened her grip on her weapon.

"Who are you?"

The man didn't look at her.

His eyes remained fixed on Arin.

"That's not the question you should be asking."

Arin stood up slowly.

"…Then what is?"

The man's gaze sharpened slightly.

"Do you understand where you are?"

Arin looked around.

At the darkness.

At the fading shadows.

"…Yeah. Somewhere I definitely shouldn't be."

The man nodded slightly.

"Correct."

Arin crossed his arms.

"Then maybe explain it instead of being mysterious like everyone else."

For a moment—

The man almost smiled.

"This place," he said, "is where broken light is consumed."

Arin's expression shifted.

"…Consumed?"

"Yes."

Maya stepped forward.

"What does that mean?"

The man finally looked at her.

"It means anything that loses its balance… ends up here."

Arin's chest tightened.

"…Including me?"

The man looked back at him.

"…If you fail."

Silence.

Heavy.

Real.

Arin swallowed.

"…And those things?" he asked, pointing at where the shadows were.

"Fragments," the man replied. "Failed ones."

Arin's heart skipped.

"…Failed what?"

The man didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"Successors."

The word hit harder than anything else.

Arin stared at him.

"…You're saying… those things used to be like me?"

The man didn't deny it.

Maya's voice was quiet.

"…That's not possible."

"It is," the man said. "And it happens more often than you think."

Arin looked down at his hands.

The faint golden light flickered weakly.

"…So if I lose control…"

The man finished the sentence.

"You become one of them."

Silence filled the chamber again.

But this time—

It felt different.

Heavier.

Real.

Arin looked back up.

"…Then why help me?"

The man's expression didn't change.

"Because you're not lost yet."

Arin let out a slow breath.

"…That's reassuring."

The man turned slightly.

The darkness shifted again—but weaker now.

Less aggressive.

"You need to leave this place," he said.

Maya nodded.

"We were trying."

The man looked at Arin.

"The path you chose… was not meant for you."

Arin sighed.

"Yeah, I figured that out a little late."

The man stepped back slightly.

The golden light around him dimmed just a bit.

"But now that you're here…" he said quietly, "…you've seen what happens if you fail."

Arin nodded slowly.

"…Yeah."

The man's gaze sharpened.

"Then don't."

Arin met his eyes.

"…I won't."

For the first time—

The man gave a small, approving nod.

The darkness around them shifted once more.

But this time—

It opened.

A new path.

Faint.

But visible.

Leading out.

Maya exhaled.

"…Finally."

Arin looked at the man.

"…You coming with us?"

The man shook his head.

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because I belong here."

Arin frowned.

"…That doesn't sound good."

The man didn't respond.

Instead, he stepped back into the fading darkness.

The golden light around him dimmed.

Slowly disappearing.

Until he was gone.

Arin stood there for a moment.

"…Yeah."

He looked at Maya.

"That was not normal."

Maya nodded.

"Nothing here is."

They turned toward the new path.

Walking carefully.

Leaving the chamber behind.

But Arin couldn't shake the feeling.

That what he just saw—

Wasn't just a warning.

It was a future.

Waiting.

And the chapter ends with Arin realizing…

The real enemy might not be Kraven.

It might be what he could become.
