Chapter 20 - Calm Before The Storm III

The convenience store was unusually quiet that afternoon, the kind of stillness that made even small sounds feel out of place. Tae-Hyuk stood behind the counter, arranging cans with careful precision.

Then the door burst open.

The bell above it rang sharply, loud enough to cut through the silence, and a figure stepped in with force rather than hesitation. Tae-Hyuk lifted his gaze and immediately met the blazing eyes of a woman and standing behind her was Hyun-Jae. Her expression carried no restraint, her anger clear in the way her shoulders were set and her steps carried her straight toward the counter.

"You!" she snapped, closing the distance between them.

Tae-Hyuk straightened slightly. "Good afternoon, madam"

"Don't 'good afternoon' me!" she cut in, slamming her palm against the counter. "Do you have any idea what you've done to my son? He's failing in school because of you. Failing!"

Her voice rose with each word, drawing the attention of everyone in the store. Tae-Hyuk remained still, listening without interruption, but before he could respond, her hand struck his cheek with a sharp sound that echoed in the confined space.

For a brief moment, silence followed.

Hyun-Jae rushed forward immediately. "Mom, stop!"

From the back, Han Dae-Sung appeared, clearly alarmed. "Please, calm down! There's no need for this ma'am."

"I will do as I please!" she snapped, clearly even more angry. "Do you know what he has been teaching my son? Fighting? Martial arts? What future is there in that? My son has a bright future ahead of him and you're here filling his head with lies, that he's destined to be what? God of war?"

Tae-Hyuk slowly raised a hand to his cheek, rubbing it once before lowering it again. His expression hadn't changed. "I understand your concern," he said calmly. "If my actions have caused him to neglect his studies, then I take responsibility."

Hyun-Jae clenched his fists. "You don't understand! I don't want that life. I don't want to sit in an office and pretend that's enough. I finally get to learn something that matters!"

"That matters?" his mother repeated sharply. "You're failing your classes. What kind of future is that?"

She turned her gaze back to Tae-Hyuk, her tone hardening further. "You've been misleading him."

Tae-Hyuk inclined his head slightly. "Then I will stop."

The words landed heavier than expected.

Hyun-Jae froze. "What…?"

"I will no longer teach him," Tae-Hyuk continued. "His future should not be compromised because of me."

There was no hesitation in his voice, no attempt to argue. Just a quiet acceptance that seemed to settle the matter more effectively than resistance ever could.

Hyun-Jae's mother exhaled slowly, her anger easing just a fraction. "Good. That is how it should be."

"And you," turning to Hyun-Jae. "This will be the last time you set foot in this store, let's go" while proceeding to storm out of the store.

Han Dae-Sung let out a quiet sigh of relief, while Seo-Yeon muttered under her breath, amused by the entire scene. Tae-Hyuk on the other hand just simply continued with is daily routine.

That night, the store fell into silence once more, but this time it carried a different weight.

Tae-Hyuk sat alone in the storage room, the dim light casting faint shadows across the walls. His posture was relaxed, yet his mind wasn't. The events of the day replayed themselves without invitation, each moment pressing against his thoughts.

Had he made the right choice?

Hyun-Jae's determination had been genuine. The boy's desire to grow, to understand something beyond the ordinary, was not something Tae-Hyuk could dismiss lightly. And yet…

The danger surrounding him was no longer contained.

The Murim world had already begun to notice and it's only a matter of time before the Demonic cult also make a move. Every step he took created consequences that reached further than intended.

If he remained here… would he protect them?

Or place them directly in harm's way?

His gaze lowered slightly, the answer unclear.

For someone who had lived through countless battles, uncertainty was rare. Yet this situation was different. Strength alone could not resolve it.

After a long moment, he exhaled quietly and rose to his feet.

There was only one path forward.

***

The next day, he left the city behind.

The mountain air greeted him with a stark contrast to the world below. It was cooler and clearer here. Tae-Hyuk stood in front of the coffee shop where he's to meet up with Lian Mei, his gaze sweeping upward toward the structures that rested along the mountainside.

After a few minutes, Lian Mei appeared. "Hey, I thought you would be no show, let's go" she said.

"Okay." Tae-Hyuk replied clearly still bothered by his thoughts.

Soon after they got the Azure Lotus sect main residence. "This is our sect's main residence," Lian Mei said as she walked ahead of him, her tone carrying a trace of pride. "Beautiful, isn't it?"

The sect grounds were well maintained, their architecture precise and refined, with curved rooftops and wide courtyards framed by flowering trees. It was a place built with care and discipline.

"It is structured well," Tae-Hyuk replied.

As they passed through the gates and into the inner courtyard, his senses stretched outward instinctively. The flow of energy within the sect was steady, but uneven in some places. The foundation was present, yet not fully realized. It lacked the depth he had known in the past.

At the center of the courtyard stood a woman.

Her presence was calm, composed, and naturally commanding. She did not need to move or speak to be noticed.

"Master," Lian Mei said, bowing slightly. "I've brought him."

The woman turned, her gaze settling on Tae-Hyuk with quiet intensity. "So you are Jin Tae-Hyuk."

"I am."

She studied him for a moment. "It's a pleasure to meet you."

Before the moment could extend further, the gates burst open with a heavy impact.

The atmosphere shifted instantly.

Tae-Hyuk did not turn right away. He already felt the energy of who had arrived.

Li Shan stepped into the courtyard with few of his disciples, his presence pressing outward as his gaze swept across the area before locking onto its target.

"Hwa Ryun," he said, his tone firm. "You've crossed the line."

Hwa Ryun sighed softly. "Must you always arrive like this?"

"This is not a visit," Li Shan replied. "The eastern mountain range now belongs to Wudang."

"That land has always been neutral," Lian Mei said clearly surprised.

"Not anymore."

The tension rose, thick and immediate, as both sides held their ground.

Then Li Shan's gaze shifted.

Slowly as it settled on Tae-Hyuk. "…What are you doing here?"

"Visiting," Tae-Hyuk answered.

Li Shan let out a short breath. "You expect me to believe that?"

Tae-Hyuk said nothing.

The silence irritated him.

"You seem to appear wherever conflict follows," Li Shan continued. "First my sect, now this one."

"You assume too much," Tae-Hyuk replied.

Several disciples behind Li Shan stiffened, the exchange alone enough to raise tension. Dae-Hyun stood among them, his eyes fixed on Tae-Hyuk, recognition clear. "That was the man who had forced their master back." He thought to himself.

Li Shan stepped forward, his presence pressing outward slightly. "Do you think defeating me once makes you untouchable?"

"I think," Tae-Hyuk said calmly, "that you should consider your next action carefully."

The courtyard fell silent.

For a brief moment, Li Shan felt it again, that same depth he had sensed before. It was not overwhelming in appearance, yet something about it resisted comprehension.

His instincts reacted before his pride could."…Tch." He turned away sharply. "This is not over. Hwa-Ryun, I'll be back."

"I'll be here Li Shan, as always." Hwa-Ryun replied.

Li Shan's fists tightened briefly, but he did not turn back. He walked away, his disciples following in silence. Dae-Hyun lingered for half a second, his gaze meeting Tae-Hyuk's once more before he turned and left as well.

When the gates closed behind them, the courtyard grew quiet again.

Lian Mei blinked, clearly caught off guard. "He just… left?"

Hwa Ryun did not answer immediately. Her gaze remained fixed on Tae-Hyuk, more thoughtful now.

"You should not have involved yourself," she said at last.

Tae-Hyuk's expression did not change."You wanted to see me?" Tae-Hyuk asked.

Hwa-Ryun didn't answer immediately.

Her gaze lingered on the gates Li Shan had just walked through, her expression growing more serious.

"I'm sorry… but it will have to wait."

Tae-Hyuk looked at her.

"Li Shan won't stop here," she continued. "If he's willing to come here openly, then he's already made up his mind."

She turned slightly, her voice steady but firm.

"I need to contact the Murim Alliance. If this escalates, it won't just involve Wudang anymore."

A brief silence followed.

"I will be the one visiting you when all this is settled" she added, giving a slight bow. "I apologize for the inconveniences."

Tae-Hyuk simply gave a small nod. "Understood."

For a moment, he stood there before turning towards the gates and began to leave.

"Wait up! Let me see you off!" Lian Mei called, while trying to catch up to him.

The answers he had come for… delayed once again.

Behind him, Hwa-Ryun watched quietly, her eyes narrowing slightly in thought.

Things were already beginning to shift.

And once the Murim Alliance became involved, there would be no turning back.
