Chapter 8 - The unknown complaints

Denita told Mian first..

That was always how it was between them.. Mian was the first to know everything.. the three knocks, the voice notes, the knowing looks.. Mian was the person Denita handed things to before she had even finished understanding them herself.. So when the yes finally happened.. when the phone was warm in her hands and something had settled quietly into place.. the first thing she did after was tell Mian..

Mian's reaction was loud and warm the way Mian always was.. the kind of happiness that takes up space and fills a room even through a phone screen.. and Denita smiled and felt, for a moment, that this was exactly right.. her person knowing her thing.. everything in its place..

She did not know yet what was coming..

Mian and Avet had always had their own thing.. the athletics practice, the easy back and forth of two people who saw each other regularly and had found a comfortable rhythm.. Mian called him her best brother.. said it openly, warmly, the way you say something you mean.. and Avet accepted it the way he accepted most things.. simply, without making a fuss..

But Denita would learn, slowly and then all at once, that what Mian said in front of Avet and what Mian said behind his back were two entirely different things..

It started quietly.. the way most things that matter start..

They were sitting together one afternoon and Mian said, with the particular casualness of someone who has been holding something for a while.. Denita.. tell your boyfriend to behave properly with me.. he is acting so rudely.. like I have done something to him..

Denita heard it.. sat with it.. and then did what she always did.. she went to Avet and said it gently.. please talk nicely with Mian.. she matters to me..

Avet agreed without argument.. okay.. and that was that.. or so Denita thought..

What she did not know then, and would only understand later, was what had reached Avet before she had.. That Mian, who called him her best brother to his face, had been saying things behind his back.. not small things, not the careless jokes that brothers and sisters throw at each other.. but words with weight.. words that carried something closer to contempt than affection.. And Avet, who was quiet about most things, had heard.. and had responded the only way he knew how.. by pulling back.. by letting the warmth drain out of his voice when she was around..

He was not wrong to feel what he felt.. Denita understood that, somewhere underneath everything else she was feeling.. but she also understood that Mian was her person.. and she was standing in the middle of something she had not asked to stand in the middle of..

So she asked.. and he adjusted.. and Avet did not become rude again.. but he became quieter around Mian.. less present.. the way you become when you have decided that less is safer than more..

But Mian did not become quieter..

The next day she said it again.. Denita.. tell your boyfriend.. this time something different, something new to fix, a fresh complaint delivered with the same casual certainty as the last one.. And Denita listened.. and went to Avet again.. and Avet adjusted again.. and the cycle continued until Denita felt like she was standing between two people she cared about, passing messages back and forth like someone who had been appointed to a job she never applied for..

After a while she stopped passing the messages.. Not with anger.. not with a confrontation.. she just.. stopped reacting.. let Mian's words land and then quietly, gently, let them go.. the way you let go of things when you have run out of places to put them..

It was Musi who said the other thing..

Musi was their friend too.. part of the same small world of Langshi Street and school corridors and afternoon conversations.. Denita had trusted her the way she trusted all her people.. openly, completely, without keeping anything back..

So when Musi said it.. Denita felt it more than she expected to..

Denita.. tell your boyfriend not to roam around our houses every day just to see you.. if he wants to see you, you go to him.. but tell him to stop coming here like this..

Denita went quiet..

Not because the words were cruel.. they were not cruel exactly.. but because somewhere underneath the practical complaint was something that stung.. the image of Avet walking past her house just to catch a glimpse of her, just to be near for a moment without making a demand of it.. and her friends seeing that and finding it inconvenient rather than finding it what it actually was..

She did not tell Avet about this one.. She held it quietly by herself and said nothing.. partly because she did not want him to feel embarrassed about something that had come from a place of feeling.. and partly because she was tired.. tired of being the person in the middle, tired of defending something that should not have needed defending, tired of the particular loneliness of trusting people with your most precious thing and having them hand you complaints in return..
