Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 — The Words That Broke Everything

It wasn't something she could explain to anyone. Nothing had clearly gone wrong, nothing had been said out loud, yet everything felt different. Like a quiet shift she couldn't see… but could feel with every passing moment.

Something about their relationship no longer felt the same.

The warmth that once lived in their conversations had slowly faded into silence. The excitement she used to feel while waiting for his messages had turned into a strange anxiety.

She still waited.

But now… she waited with fear.

Still, she tried to ignore it.

Because loving someone means trusting them, even when your heart begins to question things you don't want to doubt.

She told herself he was just busy.

She told herself she was overthinking.

She told herself everything was still okay.

But deep down… she knew she was lying to herself.

That night, as she sat quietly in her room, her phone resting in her hands, she finally stopped running from the thoughts that had been chasing her for days.

Her eyes stayed fixed on the glowing screen, but her mind was somewhere else.

Their future.

The thought came softly… but it didn't leave.

It stayed.

It grew.

They belonged to different religions.

Different traditions.

Different families that might never accept them.

Things she had once ignored… now stood right in front of her like an unavoidable truth.

She imagined telling her parents.

She imagined the silence that would follow.

The disappointment.

The questions she wouldn't have answers to.

Then she thought about him.

Would he stand for her?

Would he fight for them?

Or would he… choose the easier path?

The more she thought, the more her chest felt heavy.

Her heart wanted to hold onto him.

To ignore everything.

To believe that love was enough.

But her mind… refused to stay silent anymore.

For the first time, love didn't feel simple.

It felt complicated.

Fragile.

Scary.

With trembling fingers, Zoya opened their chat.

The same chat that once made her smile without reason… now made her hesitate.

Her fingers hovered over the keyboard.

So many emotions inside her.

So many words waiting to be said.

But none of them felt right.

How could she put something so heavy into just a few lines?

How could she risk losing something so important… with one message?

Her heartbeat grew louder.

Faster.

Almost unbearable.

She typed.

Stopped.

Deleted.

Typed again.

Paused.

Her throat felt dry.

Her hands cold.

Finally, she closed her eyes for a brief moment, took a slow breath, and let her heart speak what her mind had been trying to say all along.

"Maybe… we should stop this."

The moment she pressed send, it felt like everything inside her collapsed.

A silence filled the room.

Not the peaceful kind.

The kind that suffocates you.

Her eyes stayed locked on the screen.

Her heart raced uncontrollably.

She quickly typed again before he could misunderstand.

She explained everything.

Her fears.

Their differences.

The future she could no longer see clearly.

She didn't blame him.

She didn't accuse him.

She just… tried to protect both of them from something she felt would hurt more later.

Then she waited.

Seconds passed.

But they felt like minutes.

Her breath felt uneven.

Her fingers tightened slightly around her phone.

Then his reply appeared.

"Okay. We can stay friends."

That was it.

Just one sentence.

Simple.

Calm.

Final.

No confusion.

No questions.

No attempt to stop her.

No sign that it mattered.

And somehow…

that calmness hurt more than anything else.

Her chest tightened painfully.

Was it really that easy for him?

To let her go… just like that?

No "don't go."

No "wait."

No "let's try."

Nothing.

Just acceptance.

Zoya slowly placed her phone beside her.

Her eyes felt heavy.

Her thoughts… empty.

She tried to convince herself.

"This is right."

"This will save you."

"This is better."

But her heart refused to agree.

It didn't feel saved.

It felt abandoned.

A quiet pain spread inside her chest.

Not sharp.

Not loud.

But deep.

The kind that slowly breaks you without making a sound.

Time passed… she didn't know how much.

Her room was silent.

Her mind restless.

Then suddenly, her phone screen lit up again.

A small notification.

Without thinking, she picked it up.

Armaan was online.

Her eyes stayed on his name for a moment.

Something inside her shifted.

A feeling she didn't understand.

She didn't want to check.

She knew she shouldn't.

But her fingers moved anyway.

She opened his profile.

And what she saw…

made her heart drop.

He was chatting with another girl.

Laughing.

Joking.

The same way he used to talk to her.

The same tone.

The same comfort.

As if nothing had happened.

As if she had never mattered.

Zoya's breath got stuck in her throat.

Her chest tightened.

Her eyes scanned the messages again.

And again.

Hoping she misunderstood.

But then…

his next words appeared.

And everything inside her shattered.

He was mocking her.

Mocking her feelings.

Making fun of the way she cared.

Even insulting her religion.

For a moment…

she couldn't breathe.

Her vision blurred.

Her hands trembled uncontrollably.

This wasn't the same person.

This couldn't be the same person.

The Armaan she knew… wouldn't do this.

The Armaan she trusted… wouldn't say this.

The Armaan she loved… wouldn't break her like this.

So who was this?

Or had she been wrong all along?

Had she fallen in love with someone who never truly existed?

Tears slowly filled her eyes.

But she didn't wipe them.

She couldn't.

She was frozen.

Her fingers moved slowly, opening their chat again.

"If you never felt anything for me… then why did you propose to me?"

Her message was simple.

But behind it… was everything she couldn't say.

All her confusion.

All her pain.

All her broken trust.

The reply came quickly.

Too quickly.

Cold.

Distant.

Careless.

"It was just time pass. Now let me live in peace."

For a moment…

everything went silent.

Completely silent.

Those words…

They didn't just hurt.

They destroyed something inside her.

Something she had built with so much care.

Every late-night conversation.

Every smile.

Every moment she had trusted him.

Every feeling she had allowed herself to feel.

All of it…

felt like a lie.

Like it never meant anything.

Like she was the only one who ever believed it was real.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

Then another.

And another.

She didn't try to stop them.

Because there was nothing left to protect.

That night, Zoya finally understood a painful truth.

Sometimes…

the person you trust with your whole heart

becomes the one who teaches you

how deeply love can hurt.

And sometimes…

love doesn't end with distance.

It doesn't end with silence.

It ends with words.

Words that stay with you long after everything is over.

Words that echo in your mind even when you try to forget.

Words that break you… quietly, completely, and forever.

Zoya slowly locked her phone and held it close to her chest.

Her eyes closed gently as tears continued to fall.

Somewhere deep inside her heart…

something had ended.

Not loudly.

Not suddenly.

But completely.

And she knew…

no matter how much time passed,

this night—

this pain—

and these words…

would never truly leave her.
