The sky over Tokyo didn't turn black. It turned a sickening, artificial gold.
Thousands of Valkyries descended in a perfect, rigid phalanx, their wings radiating a light that felt more like radiation than grace. To the millions of people watching through news drones and street-level screens, it looked like a miracle. It looked like the Heavens were finally coming down to put an end to a monster. To Kaizer, standing on the obsidian balcony of the Eclipse Mansion, it looked like a pest infestation.
A holographic projection flickered into existence in the center of the city. The Director of the JAA appeared, his face pale but his eyes wide with a fanatic's gleam.
"Citizens of the world," the Director's voice boomed, vibrating through every frequency in the city. "Due to his repeated defiance and the consumption of forbidden Abyssal mana, the Ninth S-Rank, Kaizer Gold, is hereby stripped of his title. He is no longer a Hunter. He is a Calamity-Class Threat. The Heavens have sent their host to purge this cancer from our soil."
Kaizer didn't flinch. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his S-Rank insignia, a heavy platinum coin he had once fought to earn. With a single flex of his fingers, the metal groaned and shattered. It didn't fall to the floor; it turned into a fine, violet dust that the wind carried away.
"Purge?" Kaizer whispered. His voice was carried by the Sovereign's Domain, echoing so clearly that every Valkyrie in the sky heard him. "You're only here because your masters are hungry."
The Gilded Invitations
As the first wave of Valkyries began their dive, time seemed to sludge into a crawl. In that frozen second, Kaizer's mind became a crossroads for intrusive whispers. The Seven Pillars were tired of watching from the sidelines. They were moving in for the kill, or the recruit.
Discard the Jackal's filth, boy, Ares whispered, his voice smelling of iron and old blood. Swear to my throne, and I'll give you an army of Myrmidons that cannot die. We'll turn this planet into a factory of war.
The Void is a lonely path, Kaizer, Odin's voice followed, sounding like the rustle of dry parchment. Sit at my table. Give me your right eye, and I will show you the threads of every timeline.
Your shadows are a stain, Amaterasu chimed in, her voice a searing heat. Accept my sun, and I will cleanse your soul. You shall be my Light in the East.
Kaizer felt the naked greed in their voices. He wasn't a hero to them, and he wasn't a villain. He was a rare item, a limited-edition unit they wanted to pull for their own collections.
"Get out of my head," Kaizer growled. A violent flare from his eyes pushed the divine voices back into the dark. "I don't serve Pillars. I knock them down."
The Massacre of the Skies
"Guard," Kaizer commanded. "Clear the air."
The five Pariahs launched themselves from the balcony. Mina led the charge, letting out a scream amplified by her new silver throat-guard. It wasn't just noise; it was a physical shockwave of Abyssal energy. The lead Valkyries didn't just fall. Their wings disintegrated mid-air, their "Holy Light" crumbling into grey ash before they hit the ground.
Raiden took his position on the highest spire of the mansion. The Shattered Ankh rifle crackled with black lightning, and every time the trigger pulled, a Valkyrie Commander exploded in a spray of molten golden blood. Below them, Kuro moved between the rays of light like a ghost, his Void-Glass daggers erasing the Valkyries before they could even draw their swords.
The world watched in a stunned, horrified silence. Their "Angels" were being slaughtered.
The Duel of the Storm and the Sun
"That's enough!"
A bolt of white-hot lightning slammed into the mansion's courtyard. Kaito the Storm-Bringer, the JAA's loyal S-Rank, stood there with his eyes glowing with the forced power of Susanoo. Beside him stood Rin Kusanagi. Her blade was drawn, her face wet with tears.
"Kaizer, stop this!" Kaito roared. His body was twitching, his nervous system clearly struggling under the weight of the God-Contract. "The JAA is humanity's only hope! If you fight the Gods, there will be nothing left!"
"If humanity's hope is built on being a God's cattle, Kaito," Kaizer said, stepping off the balcony and drifting down through the air like a shadow, "then humanity is already dead."
Kaito charged. The clash was tectonic, white lightning grinding against black void. But Kaito was a puppet. His movements were predictable, dictated by a "Blessing" that functioned like a pre-written script. Kaizer moved through the storm with cold precision, his God-Slayer's Edge humming with a predatory vibration.
With a single, blinding stroke, Kaizer didn't hit Kaito. He hit the space behind him. The air tore open, and the shimmering spirit-thread connecting Kaito to the Heavens snapped like a dry twig. The Storm-Bringer collapsed instantly, his mana evaporating into the air. He wasn't dead, but the "God" had been pulled out of him. He was just a man again.
Rin stepped forward next, her body moving in a blurred, golden dance. Her sword, empowered by Amaterasu, was a sun-strike aimed directly at Kaizer's heart.
"Kaizer... please..." she choked out. Her hands were shaking even as they struck with lethal, divine precision. "The Contract... it won't let me... stop..."
The First Sovereign Disciple
Kaizer caught her blade with his bare palm. The divine heat seared his skin, the smell of burning flesh rising between them, but he didn't let go.
"Then let's break the Contract, Rin."
The sky grew dark. The gold of the Valkyries was swallowed by a deep, oppressive violet. Kaizer leaned in close, his voice a low rumble that resonated in Rin's very soul.
"The Gods want a slave. I want a peer. They give you a leash. I give you a Throne."
Kaizer bit his own lip, and a single drop of Sovereign Blood, darker than any shadow, fell onto Rin's forehead.
[SYSTEM ALERT: SOVEREIGN CONTRACT INITIATED] [OVERWRITING CELESTIAL PROTOCOLS...] [NEW DISCIPLE DETECTED: RIN KUSANAGI]
The golden aura around Rin shattered like glass. In its place, a cold, majestic white-violet flame erupted. Her eyes cleared, the puppet-glow replaced by a sharp, sovereign intelligence. She stood taller than she ever had, her power no longer a weight she carried, but an extension of her own will.
She looked at her hands, then at Kaizer. Without a word, she sheathed her sword and took her place at his right shoulder, facing the remaining Valkyries.
Kaizer looked up at the Heavens, knowing the Seven Pillars were watching in a fury. Their "Prize" had just defected to the Abyss. He looked at the news drone hovering nearby, his face broadcast to every corner of the globe.
"To the JAA and the bastards in the sky," Kaizer said. "The Marketplace is closed. From now on, you don't buy souls. You pay for them in blood."
He looked at the scattered feathers and the broken "heroes" on the ground.
"One Pillar down," Kaizer whispered. "Six to go."
