Chapter 10 – "The SSS-Rank Rival Appears"

The dawn light barely filtered through the academy's high towers, but the courtyard was already alive with whispers. Students crowded along the corridors and stairways, eyes glued toward the central arena where the elite duels often took place.

But this wasn't an ordinary day.

Word had spread like wildfire overnight: a first-year, Aira Valen, had absorbed multiple SSS-rank forbidden summons and survived. Her Devour ability was no longer just a rumor; it was a phenomenon. Students and teachers alike were beginning to take notice.

Even so, nobody expected what came next.

The Hook

A soft ripple of energy spread through the courtyard, like a storm brewing on the horizon. A figure appeared at the entrance: tall, composed, and radiating an aura that made the crowd fall silent.

He was the SSS-rank rival everyone whispered about but had never dared face openly: Kaelric Dorne. His piercing blue eyes scanned the arena, finally settling on Aira.

"You're the Devourer?" he asked, his voice calm but filled with subtle menace. "I've heard stories… but I wanted to see for myself."

Aira's gaze met his, unflinching. "And now that you see me… what are you going to do about it?"

A hush fell over the spectators. The SSS-rank had come personally. Not as a spectator, not as a whisper, but as a challenge. And Aira's pulse quickened—not from fear, but excitement.

The Duel Begins

Kaelric raised his wand. Shadows gathered around him, swirling with a controlled, oppressive energy. "I've never faced someone who can manipulate Devour magic at your level. Let's test just how far you've come."

Aira stepped forward, her body thrumming with the residual energy of the monsters she had absorbed the night before. Her Devour core pulsed as if it recognized the challenge and demanded satisfaction.

The first strike came in an instant: a lance of black energy aimed directly at her chest. Aira absorbed part of the strike, feeling her body adapt to the new power. Reflexes sharpened, muscles tensed, senses heightened.

Kaelric smirked. "Interesting… you're already faster."

He pressed further, attacking relentlessly with a barrage of arcane blades, shadow fire, and ice spikes infused with forbidden energy. Every attack was calculated, precise, and designed to exploit weaknesses.

Aira's Devour instinct flared. She absorbed, adapted, and turned some of his energy against him, forcing him to step back briefly.

The Crowd Reacts

Students gasped. Many had seen powerful duels before, but few had witnessed a first-year standing toe-to-toe with an SSS-rank.

"She's… really doing it!" one student whispered. "She's absorbing his magic!"

"She's going to surpass all of us," another muttered, awe and fear in their voice.

Even the teachers who had come to observe kept silent, sensing the danger but unsure of how to intervene.

Aira's eyes glinted. Let them watch. Let them fear. Every ounce of doubt that had been thrown at her, every insult, every underestimation—they all fueled her.

Devour Evolution

Kaelric summoned a shadow phoenix, its wings spreading a dark fire that illuminated the arena with eerie light. The creature's power was immense, designed to overwhelm any opponent.

Aira felt the energy surge toward her and, without hesitation, absorbed it directly into her Devour core. Her body convulsed briefly as the new magic integrated. She felt evolution rippling through her muscles, her reflexes faster than ever, her mind sharper, almost preternatural in its perception.

"This… is impossible," Kaelric muttered, adjusting his stance. "She shouldn't be able to do this… not at her age, not her level."

Aira's lips curved into a confident smile. "Impossible is just a word people use when they're too weak to try."

Romance / ML Beat

From the shadows of the rooftops, Ren Kael's gaze never left her. His jaw was clenched, his posture rigid. Every attack Aira absorbed, every spell she converted into strength, sent a thrill of protective possessiveness through him.

"She's mine," he whispered under his breath, voice low, dangerous, a promise and a warning.

Aira sensed him, as if the invisible tether between them hummed with tension. The thought both comforted and distracted her—she had to fight, but part of her wanted to feel the warmth of his presence, even in the midst of battle.

Scandal / Taboo Beat

Whispers ran through the spectators like wildfire. Rumors about Aira's rapid rise, her dangerous proximity to powerful males, and the energy she radiated spread like flames. Some students speculated about forbidden alliances, others about the growing tension between her and Ren Kael.

Even the more daring suggested scandalous notions: teacher-student affairs, forbidden duels outside the rules, and dangerous connections with SSS-rank elites.

Aira ignored it. Survival, evolution, and proving herself mattered more than gossip. But she was aware: her every move was being watched, dissected, and whispered about.

Climax

Kaelric, frustrated, combined his attacks into a massive arcane storm—a fusion of fire, shadow, and ice that swirled like a living tempest. The arena shook, stones cracking under the sheer force of the magic.

Aira closed her eyes briefly. Her Devour instinct flared at the extreme surge of energy. She let herself sink fully into her hunger, absorbing the storm into her core, converting every fragment into evolution. Her body pulsed with newfound power—stronger, faster, sharper, almost untouchable.

The storm collapsed inward, dissipating into nothingness. Kaelric staggered, eyes wide, impressed and terrified. "You… you've surpassed anything I expected."

Aira's smile was calm, almost cruel. "And I've only just begun."

Cliffhanger Ending

Before Kaelric could recover, a faint hum of dark energy emanated from the surrounding shadows. Figures cloaked in black emerged at the edges of the courtyard—elite students from forbidden factions, each radiating dangerous power.

Aira's Devour core throbbed. These were not casual challengers—they were here to test her, to push her to her limits. And somewhere deep inside, she realized: the academy she thought she was beginning to understand was full of predators, watching her every move, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

Ren Kael's eyes darkened from the rooftop, possessive and ready. "No one… will ever touch you," he whispered. "Not them, not anyone."

The night was far from over. And the true test of Aira Valen's Devour power… had just begun.

"SSS-rank rivals, forbidden factions, and predators in the shadows… the academy will never be safe again."
