Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 : Surprise! Are You Shocked?

"This fellow doesn't seem like the cruel, tyrannical Reunion Movement members from the rumors, nor does he seem like a maniacal killer."

"If I had to put a label on him, his philosophy feels a bit like those old-fashioned traditionalists who advocate for reducing or even abolishing the Originium industry—or perhaps an idealist from that famous pharmaceutical company."

"Then again, I haven't been in contact with the lad for long. It's hard to make a final judgment."

"Besides, most of the outside world's knowledge regarding Reunion comes from Ursus official reports. Naturally, they'll be painted as thugs. According to some of my intel, Reunion actually includes moderates who just want to fight for living space for the Infected. I can't entirely rule out the possibility that he hails from there."

Old Lee, applying the logical mind of a detective, made a silent assessment of Denji.

By now, Denji had mostly recovered and was currently asking Waai Fu if she was skilled with weapons. While unarmed martial arts formed the foundation of combat, Denji's true strength lay in the utilization of chainsaws and chains.

"Bladed weapons? I wouldn't say I'm an expert, but I can certainly exchange pointers and offer some guidance. What weapon do you specialize in, guest?" Waai Fu asked modestly.

Her father had been a polymath of martial arts who once owned a room filled with manuals from every conceivable sect, allowing his daughter to choose one. Waai Fu had picked the Red Plum Wing Chun Manual simply because she liked the name, leading her to specialize in hand-to-hand combat.

However, over the years, she had sparred with many martial artists skilled in blades and swords. Providing guidance to Denji would be more than manageable.

To avoid the heat from the "Chainsaw Murder Case," Denji obviously couldn't introduce himself by saying, 'I'm actually quite handy with a chainsaw.'

Instead, he replied, "I'm used to using large blades and grappling hooks. I was wondering if you could give me some tips?"

Waai Fu thought for a moment and said, "As for large blades, I have many friends 'on the path' who are quite skilled; I'll ask them for a few moves another day. Regarding grappling hooks, I happen to know someone who could be considered an expert—though she's not exactly a combat master."

"Where is this grappling hook expert? Quick, introduce me!" Denji's eyes lit up.

To him, experts and techniques for chainsaws or blade-type weapons could be found anywhere, but a specialist in grappling hooks was a rare find. The original Denji possessed a wild, primal beauty; even though he had chainsaw chains capable of high-speed movement and tracking, he had only ever used them as reins to ride a shark.

As a transmigrator who had heard of Spider-Man and Attack on Titan, Denji wasn't about to let such a useful utility go to waste.

Waai Fu scratched her head, looking a bit embarrassed. "That person is a seasoned thief named Rope. Her hands aren't exactly clean, and her personality is a bit unpredictable. I only came into contact with her because I was commissioned by a victim of theft to catch her."

"Just a thief."

Denji patted his pocket dismissively. "Thieves like money, and I have plenty of it. I'll just pay her to coach me."

Seeing his determination, Waai Fu nodded. "Alright, I'll take you to see her. But she has no fixed residence and is often out at night, so be prepared."

"Let's go then. Consider this a formal commission for your agency!" Denji turned and negotiated with Old Lee, who clearly looked like a man who appreciated coin.

After Waai Fu checked in with Old Lee, she and Denji left the agency together. They hopped onto the agency's small electric scooter and vanished into the night.

"Come back soon, and watch yourselves on the road."

After sending the two off with the tone of a guardian, Old Lee returned to the inner rooms and called out toward a certain door, "Aak, come out for a second."

Following his call, a short Feline youth dressed in research protective gear emerged from his room. He was the agency's medical technology expert, possessing a mischievous personality and an insatiable curiosity.

"What's up, Boss? The ruckus from that scrap in the backyard was loud enough to wake the dead. I was just trying to get some quiet research done," Aak said, shrugging with a hint of impatience.

But Old Lee silenced his antics with a single sentence.

"This is serious business. Don't play around."

"Understood."

Aak immediately followed Old Lee to the backyard. Being sharp-witted, he knew that while Old Lee was usually lazy and useless, it was best not to cross him when he turned serious.

Upon reaching the backyard, Old Lee pointed at the blood and tissue scattered on the ground from the intense sparring match—most of which belonged to Denji.

"Collect those. Test the blood and tissue for Originium concentration. I need to know if our guest is actually an Infected." Old Lee commanded expressionlessly.

"Eh? Boss, you're actually doing something like this without permission? Aren't you afraid of getting sued for invading a guest's privacy and ruining the agency's reputation?"

Even though Aak was a reckless brat, he hadn't expected his normally principled boss to make such a call.

Old Lee sighed and said wistfully, "Aak, you'd best remember this. There aren't many city-states on this earth that allow freaks like us to live leisurely lives, whether through laziness or obsession with research. Lungmen is one of them. Therefore, maintaining the order of this city is our primary rule. Do you understand?"

Aak stopped talking. After collecting the samples, he walked back to his room with a heart full of curiosity. He also wanted to know what kind of monstrous constitution could trade blows with Big Sister Waai Fu for so long and make his boss so wary.

Once both children had left, Old Lee remained in his chair and took a sip of tea that had already gone cold. He actually admired the grit Denji showed and was more than happy to help the Infected.

However, Old Lee still wanted to thoroughly confirm Denji's identity. After all, he had no intention of becoming an accomplice to Reunion's infiltration of Lungmen.

Little did Old Lee know that a routine test would soon involve secrets capable of overturning everything Terra knew...

On the other side, Waai Fu and Denji had left the Lee Detective Agency. Following an address Waai Fu knew, they arrived at a dilapidated shack in the Lower City.

The houses in this area were crumbling, and the air was thick with the smell of damp mold, though the single room where Rope lived showed signs of having been cleaned. It was clear that the Cautus girl still had some self-respect and hadn't completely given up on life.

Waai Fu masked her presence and walked to the door. Just as she was about to knock, her sharp martial artist's gaze caught a nylon thread as thin as a hair in the gap of the doorframe.

One end of the string was fixed to the door hinge, while the other disappeared into the shadows behind the door. It was likely a warning device, possibly connected to some sort of trap.

A flash of understanding crossed Waai Fu's eyes, and she shook her head with a light smile.

"Still as cautious as ever, I see."

She took a half-step back, flicked a small pebble with lightning speed, and snapped the nylon thread, triggering a clatter of clinking bottles and cans inside.

"Who is it?" a young girl's startled voice cried out from within.

"It's me, Waai Fu. I'm looking for a favor."

...

After a moment of silence inside, the voice spoke again: "Then come in. I actually have something urgent I wanted to tell you too!"

Having received Rope's permission, Waai Fu and Denji finally opened the door.

What met their eyes was a chaotic interior and a Cautus girl frantically packing her things. Rope, who had just returned to the agency only to fail at recovering the anonymous letter, was preparing to pack her bags and flee through the night.

The "urgent matter" she wanted to tell Waai Fu was precisely to "watch out for the Chainsaw Killer, and whatever you do, don't investigate him."

However, as Rope looked up, she saw not only the kind heroine she was acquainted with but also a somewhat familiar-looking blonde youth standing outside the door.

Rope froze instantly. With a sharp clatter, the items in her hands hit the floor.

"It's over... the Chainsaw Maniac tracked down my address and came for my head!"
