Seris didn't waste time.
"I hunt flames that think," she said plainly.
Kael crossed his arms. "Good thing I don't think I'm a flame."
She studied him. "Not yet."
Behind her stood a man, lean and quiet, eyes glowing faint amber.
"This is Dren Kaal," she added. "He hears what fire doesn't say."
Dren tilted his head slightly. "You're loud," he said to Kael. "But not the way you think."
Kael frowned. "That's helpful."
Seris stepped closer. "We've seen what that thing becomes. You're early in the process."
Lira moved beside Kael. "He's not like the others."
Seris glanced at her. "They never are. Until they are."
Silence.
Then Kael spoke.
"Then help me prove you wrong."
Seris' lips curved faintly.
"That depends," she said.
"On whether you survive what comes next."
