The next day started quietly, just like the one before it, but Maya could already feel the difference in small things. The house, the routine, even the way people spoke to her had changed. It was not loud or obvious, but it was there, and she could not ignore it no matter how much she tried to focus on her normal routine.
She went to work as usual, keeping her attention on her tasks and avoiding anything unnecessary. It helped her stay steady, even if her thoughts still wandered from time to time. She did not go near Caspian's office, and she did not expect to see him.
By midday, she received a call from the hospital, and she stepped away before answering. The update was short, but it was enough to make her pause. Her mother had been moved to a better room, and new arrangements had already been made for the treatment. Maya listened carefully, her brows slowly pulling together as she tried to understand what she was hearing. She told them she had not made any payment yet, but the response came calmly, telling her everything had already been handled and that she did not need to worry.
When the call ended, Maya stood still for a moment, her phone still in her hand. She did not need anyone to explain what had happened. She already knew.
She returned to her desk, but she could not sit still for long. After a few seconds, she stood up again and walked straight toward Caspian's office without hesitation. When she got there, she knocked once and entered after hearing his voice.
Caspian was seated as usual.
"You handled the hospital," she said, her voice steady.
It was not a question.
Caspian looked up briefly and answered, "Yes."
Maya stepped closer, her expression firm but controlled. She did not raise her voice, but her words were clear. She told him he should have informed her before doing something like that, and even though she understood why it was done, it did not sit well with her that he made that decision without telling her first.
Caspian listened without interrupting. He simply said it was necessary and that it had already been taken care of, but that did not change how Maya felt about it. She explained that this was her responsibility and that she did not like things being handled for her without her knowledge.
There was a short silence between them, but it was not tense. It was simply there.
Caspian reminded her that she had agreed to the arrangement, but Maya made it clear that agreeing did not mean giving up her voice in matters that concerned her. She told him again, calmly but firmly, that if anything like that was going to be done, she expected to be told first.
Caspian looked at her for a moment, then gave a small nod and agreed.
Maya held his gaze briefly, making sure he understood, then she added quietly, "And… thank you."
She did not say more than that.
She turned and left the office.
Her steps were firm, but when she got back to her desk and sat down, she let out a slow breath. She was relieved that her mother was taken care of, but something about the way it happened still stayed with her. She did not like losing control over her own responsibilities, even if it helped her.
Later that evening, when she returned to the house, everything looked the same, but she noticed something different again. The staff greeted her with more attention, more respect than before, and it was something she was still getting used to.
Mr. Hassan approached her with his usual calm smile and welcomed her back as young madam. Maya thanked him, and when he mentioned that everything at the hospital had already been arranged, she simply nodded. She did not question it again.
She walked to her room and closed the door behind her.
For a moment, she stood there in silence before sitting down.
This was what the agreement looked like.
Things would be done.
Decisions would be made.
Sometimes without her.
Maya leaned back slightly, her eyes fixed ahead.
She had accepted this.
But that did not mean she had to like it.
