Chapter 26 - Maya Visit Her Sick Mum

Maya did not go home immediately after work that day. Instead, she gave the driver a different address, one she had received earlier from the hospital. It was the place where her mother had been moved to, the private care house that had been arranged quietly without her involvement. Even though she had already visited once, something about going there again felt different this time. It was not just a visit anymore. She had something important to say.

The car stopped in front of the building, and Maya remained seated for a moment, looking out through the window. The place still looked calm and well kept, just like before. It did not carry the tension or urgency of a hospital. Instead, it felt peaceful in a way that made her chest feel lighter without her realizing it. After a few seconds, she stepped out and walked inside.

The environment welcomed her with the same quiet atmosphere. Staff moved gently, speaking in low tones, and everything seemed to follow a steady rhythm. When she gave her mother's name, she was directed upstairs again. This time, her steps were more certain, but her thoughts were not. She kept thinking about what she wanted to say and how to say it.

When she reached the door, she did not hesitate for long. She pushed it open and stepped in.

Her mother was awake and sitting up, just like the day before.

The sight alone made Maya pause for a brief moment. There was something comforting about seeing her like that, something that made all the stress of the past days feel a little less heavy.

"You're here," her mother said with a small smile.

Maya walked in and returned the smile. "Yes."

She moved closer and sat beside her, taking her hand gently. For a moment, she did not speak. She just looked at her, noticing the small improvements, the strength that was slowly returning, and the calm expression on her face.

"You look even better today," Maya said.

"I told you, I'm getting better," her mother replied softly.

Maya nodded, then glanced around the room again. Everything was still in place. The care, the comfort, the attention—it was all there. A caregiver stepped in briefly, greeted them politely, and checked on her mother before leaving again without disturbing the moment.

Maya watched quietly.

Everything was being handled.

She did not need to worry the way she used to.

Her fingers tightened slightly around her mother's hand, and for a moment, she looked down, her thoughts shifting without her noticing.

Then she spoke.

"Mum… I want to go back to school."

Her mother looked at her, surprised at first, then thoughtful.

"School?" she repeated.

Maya nodded. "I stopped because of everything that was happening, but I can't keep delaying it. I need to continue. I've already missed enough."

There was a short silence as her mother took in her words.

Then, slowly, she smiled.

"That's good," she said. "You should go back."

Maya looked at her, almost as if she needed that answer to be sure.

"I was thinking maybe it's too soon," she said quietly.

Her mother shook her head gently. "No. You've already done so much. You shouldn't stop your life because of me."

Maya's expression softened. "You're not the reason I stopped."

"But I'm part of it," her mother replied. "And I don't want that anymore."

Maya did not respond immediately. Instead, she held her hand a little tighter.

"I'll go back," she said after a moment. "I'll start again."

Her mother nodded, clearly pleased. "That's my daughter."

There was a small pause before her mother spoke again.

"Will your husband be okay with it?"

Maya hesitated for just a second, then nodded. "Yes. He already agreed."

Her mother's expression changed, something lighter, something more at ease. "Then that's even better."

Maya looked away briefly, her thoughts shifting again.

She still was not used to that word.

Husband.

It did not feel real, but it was now part of her life.

"He's the one taking care of everything here, right?" her mother asked.

Maya nodded.

Her mother looked around the room again, then back at her. "You chose well."

Maya did not answer that.

Instead, she said quietly, "He helped."

"That's what matters," her mother replied.

There was a small silence between them, but it was not heavy.

Then her mother smiled again. "You should bring him."

Maya looked at her. "Bring him?"

"I want to see him," her mother said. "The man who married my daughter and is taking care of her like this."

Maya did not respond immediately. Her thoughts moved for a moment, but she did not show it.

"I will," she said finally.

Her mother seemed satisfied with that answer.

They talked for a long time after that, about school, about how things would be, about small plans and simple hopes. It was not a serious conversation, but it meant a lot. For the first time in a long while, Maya felt like she was stepping back into something that belonged to her.

When it was time to leave, she stood up slowly.

"I'll come again," she said.

"I'll be waiting," her mother replied.

Maya smiled faintly, then turned and walked out of the room.

Once she stepped outside, she stopped for a moment.

Her eyes lowered slightly.

Everything she had seen.

Everything that had been done.

All of it came back to one person.

Caspian.

Maya let out a quiet breath.

"…thank you," she murmured under her breath.

She did not realize it, but something inside her had shifted.

Not completely.

Not clearly.

But it was there.

And as she walked out of the building, her thoughts moved forward again.

School.

Her life.

And everything she was stepping back into.

She was moving forward.

Even if things were not simple anymore.l
