Chapter 30 - AFTER THE TRUTH

No one spoke.

Not immediately.

Because once something like that is said—

You can't rush what comes after.

---

The courtyard felt different.

Quieter.

Even though people were still moving, talking, existing around them.

For Lina—

Everything narrowed.

To Adrian.

To Ethan.

To the space between them that suddenly meant more than anything else.

---

Vanessa had already stepped back.

Clara pulled her further away, giving them distance.

For once—

Even Vanessa didn't interrupt.

---

Adrian was the first to move.

Not toward Lina.

Toward Ethan.

---

That alone—

Shifted everything.

---

"Since when?"

His voice wasn't angry.

It wasn't soft either.

It was… searching.

---

Ethan let out a breath.

Like he had been holding it for a long time.

"Does it matter?" he asked.

"Yes."

That answer came immediately.

Too quickly to be neutral.

---

Ethan looked away briefly.

Then back.

"Long enough," he said.

Not specific.

But enough.

---

Lina felt something twist in her chest.

Not jealousy.

Not exactly.

Something more complicated.

Because this—

This wasn't something she had been part of.

And yet—

It affected her completely.

---

"Why didn't you say anything?" Adrian asked.

Ethan let out a quiet, almost humorless laugh.

"Because it wasn't supposed to be said."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one I had."

---

Silence again.

But now—

It was heavier.

More fragile.

---

"I didn't want to make things weird," Ethan continued.

"I didn't want to mess anything up."

His eyes flickered—just briefly—toward Lina.

Then back to Adrian.

---

"I knew where I stood," he added.

That line—

It carried more than it sounded like.

---

Adrian ran a hand through his hair.

Frustration. Confusion. Something else he couldn't quite name.

"You should've told me," he said.

Ethan shook his head.

"And what would that have done?"

No answer.

Because they both knew—

It would've changed everything.

Just like this had.

---

Lina finally spoke.

Quiet.

Careful.

"Ethan…"

He looked at her.

And for a moment—

There was something softer there.

Something familiar.

---

"I'm sorry," she said.

The words came naturally.

But they felt wrong the second they left her mouth.

---

Ethan noticed.

"Don't," he said gently.

"I mean it."

"I know," he replied. "But this isn't your fault."

That was true.

But it didn't make her feel better.

---

Because somehow—

She felt like she had stepped into the middle of something that existed long before her.

---

Adrian exhaled slowly.

Trying to ground himself.

"This doesn't change anything," he said.

The words came out firm.

Definite.

Like he needed them to be true.

---

Ethan nodded.

"Yeah," he said.

But his voice—

Didn't fully agree.

---

And Lina noticed.

Of course she did.

---

Because things had already changed.

The moment the truth was said—

Everything shifted.

---

"You don't believe that," Adrian said quietly.

Ethan hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then—

"I believe you want it not to change anything."

That was honest.

Too honest.

---

Adrian went still.

Because that—

That hit deeper than anything else so far.

---

Across the courtyard, Clara watched with a slight frown.

"They're not handling this well," she murmured.

Vanessa tilted her head slightly.

"They're handling it honestly," she said.

"That's not always better."

Vanessa smiled faintly.

"It is if you want something real."

---

Back between them, the tension stretched tighter.

Not explosive.

But fragile.

---

"I didn't plan for this," Ethan said quietly.

"No one did," Lina replied.

"That's not what I meant."

They both knew it.

---

Ethan looked at Adrian again.

"I didn't plan to still feel this," he said.

There it was.

Clear.

Unfiltered.

---

Lina's chest tightened again.

Because hearing it like that—

Made it real in a different way.

---

Adrian didn't respond immediately.

For once—

He didn't have something to say.

---

Because this wasn't simple.

This wasn't something he could just push aside.

Not when it involved Ethan.

Not when it had always been just them before everything else.

---

"I need a minute," Adrian said finally.

His voice was quieter now.

Less certain.

---

He stepped back.

Then turned.

And walked away.

---

Not angrily.

Not dramatically.

But like someone trying to process too many things at once.

---

Lina watched him go.

And for the first time—

She didn't follow.

---

Because this—

Wasn't just hers to fix.

---

Ethan stayed where he was.

Hands in his pockets.

Shoulders slightly tense.

But not running.

Not hiding.

---

"You didn't have to stay," Lina said softly.

Ethan gave a small shrug.

"Running now wouldn't change anything."

No.

It wouldn't.

---

Silence settled between them.

Different from before.

Not awkward.

But aware.

---

"I meant it," Ethan said after a moment.

Lina looked at him.

"What?"

"About not wanting to mess things up," he said.

"I didn't want to come between you and him."

"You didn't," Lina said quickly.

Ethan gave her a look.

One that said—

You don't know that.

---

And maybe she didn't.

---

"I don't regret choosing him," Lina added.

Ethan nodded.

"I know."

"And this doesn't change that."

Another nod.

But slower.

Heavier.

---

"I didn't expect it to," he said.

And that—

That hurt more than if he had.

---

Because it meant—

He had already accepted his place in all of this.

---

"I just…" he paused.

Then shook his head slightly.

"It's fine."

Lina frowned.

"No, it's not."

Ethan smiled faintly.

A tired kind of smile.

"Yeah," he said quietly. "I know."

---

Across the courtyard, Vanessa watched Adrian walk away.

Alone.

Processing.

Breaking—

Just a little.

---

"That's where it starts," she murmured.

Clara glanced at her. "What does?"

Vanessa's eyes didn't leave Adrian.

"The real conflict."

---

And she was right.

---

Because this wasn't just about love anymore.

It was about loyalty.

About timing.

About feelings that didn't fit neatly together.

---

And now—

All of it was out in the open.

---

Nothing hidden.

Nothing simple.

Nothing easy.

---

That evening, Lina sat by her window again.

But this time—

Her thoughts weren't just about Adrian.

They were about Ethan too.

About everything she didn't see.

About everything she stepped into without knowing.

---

Her phone buzzed.

Her heart skipped—

But it wasn't Adrian.

---

Ethan: I'm sorry you got dragged into that.

Lina stared at the message.

Then typed slowly—

Lina: You didn't drag me into anything.

Pause.

Then—

Lina: I just didn't know.

---

A few seconds passed.

Then—

Ethan: Yeah.

---

No follow-up.

No explanation.

Just that.

---

Across town, Adrian sat alone.

Phone in his hand.

Screen dark.

Thoughts loud.

---

For the first time—

He wasn't just thinking about Lina.

---

He was thinking about Ethan.

---

And what that meant.

---

And what it might change.

---

Because sometimes—

The hardest part isn't choosing between two people.

It's realizing

you never understood the choice to begin with.
