Chapter 29 - THE TRUTH YOU DON'T SAY

The next day didn't feel normal.

It felt… anticipated.

Like something had already been decided, and everyone was just waiting for it to happen.

---

Lina arrived earlier than usual.

Not because she wanted to.

But because waiting at home felt worse.

The campus was quieter.

Softer.

Like the world hadn't fully woken up yet.

And for a moment—

She wished things could stay like this.

Uncomplicated.

Unspoken.

---

"You came early."

Lina turned.

Adrian.

Of course.

He was already there.

Leaning against the railing like he had been waiting longer than he'd admit.

---

"Yeah," Lina said.

Small pause.

Different from before.

But not distant.

Just… aware.

---

"You said you wanted to talk," she added.

Adrian nodded.

"I do."

He pushed off the railing and stepped closer.

Not too close.

But not far either.

That space between them again—

Always there now.

---

"I've been thinking," he said.

Lina gave a small, almost nervous smile. "Same."

"Yeah," he murmured. "I figured."

Silence.

But this time—

It wasn't empty.

It was building.

---

"I don't want this to fade into something half-real," Adrian said.

That caught her off guard.

"What does that mean?"

"It means I don't want us to keep pretending we're okay when we're not," he said. "Or pretending we're not something when we are."

Lina's chest tightened.

"That's not what I'm doing."

"I know," he said quickly. "I'm not blaming you."

Then softer—

"I just don't want to lose this by slowly pulling it apart."

---

That hit.

Because that's exactly what it felt like they were doing.

---

"So what do we do?" Lina asked.

Adrian hesitated.

And for once—

That hesitation matched hers.

"I think we need to be honest," he said.

"About what?"

"Everything."

---

That word—

It felt heavy.

Because "everything" meant things they hadn't touched yet.

Things they avoided.

Things that would change everything if said out loud.

---

Lina took a breath.

"Okay," she said. "Then you start."

Adrian let out a small breath, almost like a quiet laugh.

"Of course I do."

But he didn't back out.

---

"I don't regret choosing you," he said.

Lina blinked slightly.

"I know."

"But I think I expected it to feel easier after that," he continued. "And when it didn't… I didn't know how to handle it."

That was honest.

More honest than he usually let himself be.

---

"I thought if I just stayed the same, it would settle," he added.

"And it didn't," Lina said softly.

"No."

Silence.

Then—

"Your turn," he said.

---

Lina looked down at her hands.

Then back up.

"I don't regret choosing you either," she said.

Adrian's shoulders relaxed—just a little.

But she wasn't done.

"I just… didn't realize how much everything else would change with it."

"That's not your fault."

"I know," she said. "But I still feel it."

---

She hesitated.

Then—

"I think I'm scared of losing myself in something I don't fully understand yet."

Adrian didn't interrupt.

Didn't argue.

Just listened.

---

"And I think you're not scared in the same way," she added.

That was the truth.

And it mattered.

---

Adrian nodded slowly.

"You're right," he said.

That surprised her.

"You agree?"

"Yeah," he said. "I'm not scared the same way you are."

Pause.

Then—

"But that doesn't mean I don't feel it."

That shifted something.

---

Because this time—

He wasn't ahead.

He was just… different.

---

Before Lina could respond—

A voice cut in.

"Wow. This is intense for this early in the morning."

Vanessa.

---

Lina stiffened immediately.

Adrian's expression hardened slightly.

"Not now, Vanessa."

Vanessa smiled lightly, stepping closer anyway.

"Relax. I'm not here to interrupt," she said. "I'm just… observing."

"Then observe from somewhere else," Adrian replied.

Vanessa ignored him.

Her eyes were on Lina.

"You look like you're about to say something important," she said.

Lina didn't respond.

Didn't give her that.

---

But Vanessa didn't need a response.

She turned slightly—

Looking past them.

---

At Ethan

He stood a few steps away.

Closer than usual.

And for once—

He wasn't hiding it.

Not the tension.

Not the conflict.

Not the way his gaze stayed on Adrian a second too long.

---

Vanessa's smile deepened.

Subtle.

Sharp.

"Oh," she murmured.

Clara, standing behind her, noticed it too.

And her expression shifted immediately.

"Vanessa," Clara said quietly.

But it was too late.

---

"What?" Adrian asked, following her gaze.

And then—

He saw Ethan.

---

For a second—

Nothing happened.

Just silence.

---

Then Vanessa spoke.

Soft.

Clear.

Perfectly timed.

---

"You really don't see it, do you?"

Adrian frowned. "See what?"

Vanessa tilted her head slightly.

And then—

She said it.

---

"He doesn't just care about Lina."

---

Silence.

Sharp.

Immediate.

---

Lina's breath caught.

Adrian stilled.

And Ethan—

Ethan didn't move.

---

"What are you talking about?" Adrian said.

But his voice—

Wasn't as steady as before.

---

Vanessa didn't look away from Ethan.

"You've been so focused on her," she said lightly, "you didn't notice what's been right next to you the whole time."

"Vanessa," Clara warned.

But Vanessa smiled.

---

"Or maybe you did," she added. "And just didn't want to deal with it."

---

Adrian's gaze shifted back to Ethan.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like he was seeing something for the first time.

---

Ethan exhaled.

Not sharply.

Not dramatically.

Just… tired.

---

"You didn't have to say it like that," he said quietly.

---

And just like that—

It wasn't a question anymore.

---

Lina felt her chest tighten.

Because suddenly—

This wasn't just about her and Adrian.

It was bigger.

Messier.

More complicated than she had prepared for.

---

Adrian stepped forward slightly.

"Ethan…"

But he didn't finish.

Because what do you say—

When everything you thought you understood suddenly shifts?

---

Ethan met his gaze.

No more hiding.

No more deflecting.

Just truth.

---

"I wasn't going to say anything," he said.

"And I didn't want it to matter."

Pause.

Then—

"But it does."

---

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

---

Vanessa stepped back slightly.

Satisfied.

Not because she caused chaos—

But because she revealed something real.

---

Clara shook her head softly.

"Now you've done it."

Vanessa's smile didn't fade.

"It was already there."

---

And she was right.

---

Because now—

Nothing was simple anymore.

Not Lina and Adrian.

Not Adrian and Ethan.

Not even Lina and Ethan.

---

Everything had shifted.

All at once.

---

And this time—

There was no going back to before.
