Chapter 4 - The Affair Trap

My phone was still trembling faintly in my hand.

The words "Don't trust anyone" burned into my vision.

I tightened my hold around my son.

The silence around me was so deep I could hear my own heartbeat.

Thump.

Thump.

I lifted my head. My gaze moved slowly from one person to the next.

My husband.

That woman.

And… my child.

If someone was lying…then it had to be one of them.

Or both.

"I'm taking him home."

My voice was calm. Cold.

Without waiting for a reply, I grabbed my son's hand and turned to leave.

"Stop."

My husband's voice rang out behind me.

I paused. But didn't turn back.

"You think you can just walk away like that and it's over?"

A quiet laugh slipped from my lips.

"Isn't that what you wanted? For me to leave?"

Silence stretched behind me.

Then he spoke, slowly:

"You're misunderstanding everything."

That sentence.

Again.

I spun around.

My eyes were so cold even I didn't recognize them.

"Then say it."

"Right now."

"What the hell are you doing?"

The tension snapped tight. The woman suddenly spoke.

"You're not going to tell her the truth?"

I turned to look at her.

The soft, sweet mask was gone.

Her eyes were different now.

Sharp. Cold. Alert.

My husband frowned.

"Be quiet."

She let out a small laugh.

"How long do you think she'll keep trusting you like this?"

My fingers clenched.

"You talk."

I stared straight at her.

"Who are you?"

A pause.

Then she took a step forward.

Not fast. Not slow.

"You think I'm the other woman?"

I didn't answer.

I didn't need to.

She smiled faintly.

"That would make sense."

"Since that's exactly what you were led to believe."

My heart skipped.

"What do you mean?"

My husband stepped forward.

For the first time…

I saw something real on his face.

Not panic.

Not guilt.

But resolve.

"I'm sorry."

I froze.

"But I couldn't let you know any earlier."

I laughed.

"Couldn't?"

"Or didn't dare to?"

He shook his head.

"I wasn't allowed to."

The answer sent a chill down my spine.

"The person who's been texting you…"

He paused for a second.

"…wasn't random."

I immediately thought of the unknown number.

"Then who is it?"

He didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at the woman.

Their eyes met.

A silent understanding.

My chest tightened.

She exhaled.

Then said, her voice calm—too calm:

"It was me."

The air froze.

I stared at her.

Unblinking.

"You?"

She nodded.

"The messages. The photos. The videos."

"I sent all of them."

One second.

Two seconds.

My mind went blank.

"Are you kidding me?"

I let out a laugh.

"Or is this some new game the two of you are playing?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"This was the only way to make you come here… on your own."

"Then what was the point?"

I nearly spat each word.

"What did you want me to see?"

She was silent for a few seconds.

Then said:

"I wanted you to see…"

"…where your husband is standing."

The air grew heavy.

I turned to him.

"Say it."

"What exactly are you involved in?"

He looked at me for a long time.

Then said slowly—

A sentence that shattered my world for the second time.

"I'm not one of them."

A beat.

"But I'm not completely outside it either."

I went still.

"What does that even mean?"

The woman continued.

"He's… getting close to them."

"To gather information."

I couldn't breathe.

"Getting close…?"

"What are you saying you are?"

My husband met my eyes.

His voice dropped.

"I'm trying to pull those kids out of their hands."

Silence.

Total.

I looked at him.

For a long time.

Then I laughed.

A hollow sound.

"You expect me to believe that?"

Right then—

My phone buzzed again.

A new message.

This time… from a different number.

Only one line:

"The truck has left the lot."

My heart dropped.

The woman's expression changed instantly.

"We're out of time…"

My husband turned sharply.

"What?"

She looked at him.

"They changed the plan."

The tension exploded in an instant.

My husband grabbed his car keys.

"Take him home. Lock the doors. Don't open for anyone."

He looked at me.

This time…

there was nothing fake in his eyes.

Only one thing left.

Fear.

"And if I don't come back before tonight…"

He paused.

"Don't wait for me."

I stood there, frozen.

Before I could react he had already turned and rushed out.

The woman followed him.

The restaurant doors slammed shut.

Inside it was just me and my son.

And a truth that had just been revealed…only to become even more dangerous.
