Chapter 4 - ch 2 part 1

Shanti's carriage rattled along the winding forest path, the trees growing denser and the air thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves. The System's voice broke the silence, "We're almost there, Shanti. Gurukul's just ahead."

Shanti's eyes sparkled with anticipation as she leaned forward, her fingers drumming a staccato beat on the carriage window. The trees parted, revealing a sprawling complex of ancient stone buildings, their roofs a riot of tangled greenery and moss-covered tiles.

The carriage clumbled to a stop in front of a massive wooden gate, adorned with intricate carvings of gods and mythical creatures. Shanti's eyes widened as she took in the imposing structure, her heart racing with excitement.

A grizzled old gatekeeper, his face a map of wrinkles, peered out from behind the gate. "Who goes there?" he growled, his voice like rusty hinges.

Shanti smiled, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Sayan, new student. Here to learn the ancient ways."

The gatekeeper's gaze narrowed, his eyes lingering on Shanti's face before nodding curtly. "Welcome, sayan. You're expected. I'll take you to the head guru."

The gate swung open, revealing a courtyard bustling with students, their faces a mix of curiosity and wariness as they eyed Shanti's carriage. Shanti's grin grew wider as she stepped out, her eyes scanning the crowd for a glimpse of the main character.

The System's voice whispered in her ear, "He's not here yet, but he's expected soon. Get ready, Shanti.

The gatekeeper led Shanti through the winding corridors of Gurukul, the stone walls echoing with the whispers of ancient knowledge and forgotten secrets. Shanti's eyes drank in the sights, her mind hungry for the mysteries that lay hidden within these hallowed halls.

As they walked, the System's voice whispered in her ear, "Shanti's past is a complex web of pain and resilience. Born into a family of warriors, she was trained from a young age in the art of combat and strategy. But her true passion lay in mathematics and science, which her parents saw as 'soft' and 'unimportant' for a future leader."

Shanti's eyes clouded over, the memories still raw. "My parents wanted me to marry a powerful lord and secure our family's position. But I had other plans. I wanted to study, to learn, to make a difference."

The System continued, "So, she made a pact with the System – she'd take on a male persona and study at Gurukul, using her knowledge to change the course of history. But the cost was steep – she'd have to leave her family, her friends, and her true identity behind."

Shanti's jaw clenched, her eyes flashing with determination. "I'm doing this for myself, for my future. I'll make sure it's worth it."

The gatekeeper stopped in front of a wooden door, adorned with intricate carvings of mathematical symbols and scientific diagrams. "Head guru's chambers. You'll be studying under his guidance."

Shanti took a deep breath, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. She was one step closer to her goal. But what lay ahead?

The System's voice whispered, "Get ready, Shanti. Your life's about to change forever."

Shanti pushed open the door, her eyes adjusting to the dim light within. The head guru, an imposing figure with piercing eyes, beckoned her forward. "So, you're the new student. Sayan, is it?"

Shanti nodded, her mind racing to recall the details of her cover story. "Yes, guru. Sayan, son of..."

The guru waved his hand, cutting her off. "I know your story. I've been told you're a prodigy in mathematics. Is that true?"

Shanti's eyes sparkled with confidence. "I've studied the ancient texts, guru. I'm ready to learn more."

The guru's gaze lingered on her face, making Shanti's skin prickle with unease. "We'll see about that. You'll be studying under the guidance of Guru Shishtanand. He's... particular about his students."

Shanti's heart skipped a beat as the guru mentioned the name. Shishtanand was a legend at Gurukul, known for his unorthodox teaching methods and brutal honesty.

The System's voice whispered in her ear, "Be careful, Shanti. Shishtanand's got a reputation for pushing his students to their limits. And he's the one who's going to teach Naveen, the main character."

Shanti's eyes narrowed, her mind racing with possibilities. This was getting more interesting by the minute.

The guru's voice brought her back to reality. "Report to Shishtanand's chambers at dawn tomorrow. Don't be late, Sayan."

Shanti nodded, her eyes locked on the guru's. She was ready for whatever lay ahead.

The next day, Shanti arrived at Shishtanand's chambers, her eyes scanning the room for any sign of Naveen. The guru's piercing gaze met hers, making her skin prickle with unease.

"Ah, Sayan. You're punctual. That's a good start," Shishtanand said, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

Just then, a rustling sound came from the corner of the room, and a figure emerged – a stunning girl with piercing blue eyes and raven-black hair, dressed in the finest silks. She smiled sweetly at Shishtanand, "Guru, I've brought the texts you asked for."

Shishtanand nodded curtly, "Ah, Princess Aarya. Always eager to please. Meet Sayan, our new student."

Aarya's gaze flickered to Shanti, her eyes narrowing slightly before she smiled. "Delighted to meet you, Sayan."

The System whispered in Shanti's ear, "Aarya's the queen bee, Naveen's love interest in the original novel, daughter of the Gurukul's patron king. Her family's been supporting Gurukul for generations, and she's got a vested interest in seeing Naveen succeed."

Shanti's eyes narrowed, her mind racing with possibilities. This was the girl who'd be competing for Naveen's attention? She smiled sweetly, playing along. "Mathematics, actually. I've heard Gurukul's got excellent texts on the subject."

Aarya's smile faltered for a moment before she laughed. "Oh, yes. Our library's quite renowned. Perhaps we can study together sometime, Sayan?"

Shishtanand cleared his throat, "Enough, Aarya. Sayan's here to learn, not socialize. Let's begin."

As the lesson started, Shanti's eyes locked onto Aarya, her mind whirling with strategies. This was going to be a fun semester.

Shishtanand's eyes scanned the room, his gaze lingering on Aarya before moving to Shanti. "Today, we'll be studying the ancient art of celestial navigation. Aarya, demonstrate the calculations for plotting a star's trajectory."

Aarya stepped forward, her hands moving deftly as she began to write on the slate. Shanti watched, impressed, as Aarya's calculations flowed effortlessly.

The System whispered in Shanti's ear, "Aarya's one of Shishtanand's star pupils. But her fate's sealed – she'll fall deeply in love with Naveen, and when he rejects her, she'll turn down a dark path, using her family's influence to manipulate events from the shadows. Her obsession with Naveen will be her downfall."

Shanti's eyes widened as she watched Aarya finish her demonstration. The girl's future was tragic, and it broke Shanti's heart.

Shishtanand nodded, "Good, Aarya. Now, Sayan, show me what you've got."

As Shanti began to work on the problem, Aarya's eyes lingered on her, a calculating glaze in their depths. Shanti's instincts screamed warning – this girl was trouble, and she needed to be handled carefully.

The System's voice whispered, "Aarya's got a darkness within her, fueled by her family's expectations and her own ambition. Naveen's rejection will be the spark that sets it off."

Shanti's eyes locked onto Aarya, a plan forming in her mind. She'd make sure Aarya didn't suffer the same fate as in the original novel. She'd change her destiny, and maybe, just maybe, save her from herself.

Shanti's eyes remained fixed on Aarya as she replied, "Why not? She's got potential, and her fate's... sad. I want to see her happy, maybe succeed in her own right."

The System's voice was neutral, "You know it's not just about changing one person's fate, Shanti. You'll be altering the course of history. Are you prepared for the consequences?"

Shanti's gaze didn't waver, "I've thought about it. I want to try. Maybe Aarya's meant for more than being Naveen's love interest."

The System fell silent, leaving Shanti to wonder if she'd made a mistake. But she was determined to see it through.
