Chapter 20 - The First Doubt

The night had settled fully by the time silence returned to the villa.

Not the distant kind.

The kind that stayed close—like it had something to say, but was waiting.

Xu Chen stood near the glass wall, fingers loosely wrapped around a glass of water he hadn't touched in a while.

Outside, the garden rested under a soft wash of light. The trees swayed slightly, shadows shifting in slow patterns across the grass.

He wasn't really looking at it.

He was thinking.

Behind him, Aum moved quietly.

No sound of footsteps, no unnecessary motion—just presence.

"You've been standing there for a long time," Aum said.

Xu Chen exhaled lightly, the corner of his lips lifting just a little.

"…You've been watching me for a long time."

Aum didn't deny it.

"Yes."

Xu Chen turned then, leaning his shoulder against the glass, facing him fully.

"…You always answer like that," he said.

Aum stepped closer.

"It is accurate."

Xu Chen let out a quiet breath, somewhere between amusement and something softer.

"…You're going to keep saying that, aren't you?"

"Yes."

That made Xu Chen smile properly this time.

Small.

Real.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The space between them felt… different tonight.

Closer.

Xu Chen's gaze didn't leave Aum this time.

Not casually.

Not in passing.

Carefully.

"There's something off about you," he said finally.

Aum didn't react immediately.

"I am aware."

Xu Chen took a step forward.

Then another.

"You say things like you've studied people," he continued, voice quieter now, "but you don't always understand them."

Aum held his gaze.

"I am learning."

Xu Chen stopped just in front of him.

Close enough to notice the smallest shift in expression.

Close enough to feel the warmth between them.

"…From me?" Xu Chen asked.

Aum answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

The word landed softly.

But it stayed.

Xu Chen's breath slowed.

Something in his chest tightened—slightly, unexpectedly.

"…That's a lot of pressure," he murmured.

Aum tilted his head slightly.

"It is efficient."

Xu Chen let out a quiet laugh, shaking his head.

"…You really don't hear yourself, do you?"

Aum's expression remained steady.

"I do."

Xu Chen's smile faded, just a little.

Not completely.

Just enough.

"…No," he said softly. "I don't think you do."

The distance between them disappeared without either of them deciding it.

Aum didn't step back.

Xu Chen didn't either.

Their breathing shifted—subtle, uneven in a way neither of them pointed out.

Xu Chen's eyes dropped briefly.

Then lifted again.

"…When you talk about where you're from," he said slowly, "it doesn't sound like a place."

Aum's gaze stayed steady.

"It is a place."

"…Then why does it feel like something else?"

Aum didn't answer immediately.

Xu Chen searched his face again—more openly this time.

"You don't talk about people," he continued. "You talk about systems. Structure. Output. Efficiency."

A small pause.

"…That's not how anyone describes home."

Aum's breathing shifted—just slightly.

"It was sufficient," he said.

Xu Chen's eyes narrowed faintly.

"…Was?"

Aum didn't look away.

"For a long time."

The words settled into something deeper.

Xu Chen felt it.

"…And now?" he asked quietly.

Aum's gaze moved—not away, but closer.

More focused.

"It is no longer the same."

Xu Chen's breath caught for a fraction of a second.

"…Because of what?"

Aum didn't answer with words immediately.

Instead—

he stepped closer.

Close enough that Xu Chen could feel it.

The shift.

The warmth.

The awareness.

Aum's gaze dropped briefly.

To Xu Chen's lips.

Then back to his eyes.

"I am still determining that," he said.

Xu Chen didn't move.

Something in his chest tightened again—stronger this time.

"…You're doing something," he said, voice lower now.

Aum didn't step back.

"What am I doing?"

Xu Chen let out a slow breath.

"…I don't know."

And that was the problem.

Xu Chen always knew.

What he was doing.

What others were doing.

Where things stood.

Here—

he didn't.

His hand moved before he thought about it.

Not much.

Just enough to brush against Aum's wrist.

The contact was light.

Barely there.

But it stayed.

Aum didn't pull away.

His gaze didn't shift.

Xu Chen felt it then.

Clear.

Unfamiliar.

His own reaction.

"…This isn't normal," he said quietly.

Aum's voice came just as calm.

"I am aware."

Xu Chen's fingers remained where they were.

"…And you're okay with that?"

Aum looked at him.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No confusion.

Just that.

Xu Chen's breath slowed.

"…You don't even question it?"

Aum's gaze held his.

"I did."

A pause.

"…And?"

Aum's voice softened—just slightly.

"It did not require correction."

The words landed deeper than anything else he had said.

Xu Chen felt it.

His hand moved then—almost unconsciously—closing slightly around Aum's wrist before he realized what he was doing.

He froze.

Aum didn't.

For a second—

they stayed like that.

Close.

Still.

Then Xu Chen let go.

Stepping back just enough to breathe properly again.

He ran a hand through his hair, letting out a quiet exhale.

"…You're trouble," he muttered.

Aum tilted his head slightly.

"That is not a positive classification."

Xu Chen let out a soft laugh.

"…I didn't say it was bad."

Aum watched him.

The tension didn't disappear.

It settled.

Stayed.

Xu Chen turned slightly, looking back toward the garden again.

But this time—

he wasn't pretending to focus on it.

His thoughts didn't settle the way they usually did.

They moved.

Returned.

Paused.

Too many things didn't align.

Too many answers felt incomplete.

And yet—

he hadn't stepped away.

He had stepped closer.

Behind him, Aum remained where he was.

Still.

But different.

There was something new in the way he stood.

In the way he looked at Xu Chen.

Not analysis.

Not observation alone.

Something… quieter.

And for the first time—

Xu Chen didn't just notice the difference.

He felt it.

And that was where the doubt truly began.
