Chapter 32 - The Distance He Chose

Night settled slowly over the villa, carrying a quiet that felt heavier than usual.

The lights were dim, casting soft shadows across the walls. Everything was in place—nothing disturbed, nothing out of order. And yet, the space between them felt… altered.

Xu Chen stood near the wardrobe, folding a few of his clothes with unnecessary focus. Aum sat on the edge of the couch, watching him—not directly, but enough to notice every movement.

"You are organizing at this hour," Aum said. "Is that necessary?"

Xu Chen didn't look up. "Just getting things sorted."

Aum tilted his head slightly. "For what purpose?"

Xu Chen exhaled, then straightened. "I'll be using the other room from tonight."

The words landed quietly.

Aum blinked once, processing.

"You mean… permanently?" he asked.

"For now," Xu Chen replied. "It makes more sense."

Aum stood up slowly. "I do not understand."

Xu Chen finally looked at him. "There's nothing complicated about it. You can have this room. I'll take the other one."

"That was not the arrangement earlier," Aum said.

"You were new here earlier," Xu Chen replied. "Didn't know the place, didn't know anything. I thought it'd be better if I stayed."

"And now?"

"Now you're fine."

Aum's gaze held steady. "So your presence is no longer required."

Xu Chen frowned slightly. "That's not what I meant."

"That is what you said."

"No," Xu Chen corrected, his tone tightening a little. "I said you don't need supervision anymore."

Aum went silent for a second.

Then, quietly—

"I did not consider it supervision."

The words were simple.

But they carried something else.

Xu Chen looked away first.

"It was just… practical," he said.

Aum stepped a little closer. "Then why change something that was functioning without issue?"

Xu Chen let out a short breath. "Because things change, Aum."

A pause.

"And this is one of those things."

Aum studied him.

"You are avoiding something."

Xu Chen's jaw tightened. "I'm not."

"You are," Aum said, calm but certain. "Your behavior has been inconsistent since yesterday."

Xu Chen let out a quiet, almost humorless laugh. "You're analyzing me now?"

"I am trying to understand you."

"Then don't overthink it," Xu Chen replied. "It's just a room."

Aum shook his head slightly. "It is not just a room."

Xu Chen looked at him again, something sharper in his eyes now. "Then what is it?"

Aum didn't answer immediately.

Because the answer—

was not simple.

"It is distance," Aum said finally.

The word settled between them.

Xu Chen held his gaze for a second longer than usual.

"…Maybe I need that," he said.

Aum frowned slightly. "From me?"

Xu Chen hesitated.

"…From everything."

Aum's expression didn't change much, but something in his eyes shifted.

"That is not accurate," he said quietly.

Xu Chen's patience thinned. "What's not accurate?"

"You are not creating distance from everything," Aum replied. "Only from me."

The statement was direct.

Precise.

And impossible to dismiss.

Xu Chen ran a hand through his hair, exhaling sharply. "You're reading too much into it."

"I am observing," Aum said.

"Well, stop," Xu Chen snapped, then paused, softening slightly. "Just… stop trying to break everything down."

Aum went quiet.

Not because he agreed—

but because the reaction didn't align with what he expected.

"You are upset," Aum said.

"I'm not upset."

"You are," Aum repeated. "Your tone is elevated. Your responses are shorter. Your eye contact is inconsistent."

Xu Chen let out a breath, almost amused despite himself. "You really don't miss anything, do you?"

"I am trying not to," Aum replied.

That made Xu Chen's expression shift—just a little.

Something softer.

Something tired.

"Look," Xu Chen said after a moment, his voice quieter now. "It's not about you being a problem."

Aum didn't respond.

"So don't stand there like you've done something wrong," Xu Chen added.

"I did not say that."

"You didn't have to."

Aum held his gaze. "Then explain it."

Xu Chen hesitated.

The words were there—

but not easy to say.

"I just… need some space to think," he said finally.

"About what?"

Xu Chen gave a small, almost helpless smile. "That's exactly the problem."

Aum frowned slightly.

"I do not follow."

Xu Chen looked at him, really looked this time.

And for a second—

it felt like he might say everything.

But he didn't.

"Just… trust me on this," he said.

Aum's response came immediately.

"I do."

That stopped Xu Chen.

Completely.

The room went quiet.

Aum's voice hadn't wavered.

There was no hesitation in it.

No doubt.

Just—

certainty.

"I trust you," Aum repeated, softer this time. "That is why I am asking."

Xu Chen swallowed slightly, his gaze shifting away.

"…You make it difficult," he muttered.

Aum tilted his head. "Difficult?"

"To keep things simple," Xu Chen replied.

A faint pause.

Then—

"That was not my intention."

"I know," Xu Chen said.

And he did.

That was the problem.

A moment passed.

Then another.

"Fine," Xu Chen said, picking up his clothes again. "I'll move my stuff."

Aum watched him.

"You have already decided," he said.

"Yeah."

"Then why are we discussing it?"

Xu Chen glanced at him, a small smirk forming despite everything. "Because you don't stop asking questions."

Aum considered that.

"…That is true."

Xu Chen huffed out a quiet laugh.

For a brief second—

the tension eased.

"You're really going to take the other room?" Aum asked again.

"Yes."

"It is smaller."

"I'll survive."

"The lighting is not optimal."

"I'll manage."

"The window does not face the garden."

Xu Chen paused, then looked at him. "Are you seriously trying to convince me not to go?"

Aum held his gaze.

"Yes."

Xu Chen blinked.

"…You're very direct."

"That is efficient."

Xu Chen shook his head slightly, a faint smile appearing despite himself. "You're unbelievable."

Aum didn't smile.

But something in his expression softened.

"Just… don't overthink it tonight," Xu Chen said finally. "We'll talk tomorrow."

"About what?"

"About your situation," Xu Chen replied. "What you want to do next. What's possible, what's not."

Aum nodded slowly.

"You will be available?"

"I'm not going to the site tomorrow," Xu Chen said. "No work."

Aum processed that.

"Then we will have sufficient time."

"Yeah," Xu Chen replied. "We will."

A small silence followed.

"Goodnight, Aum."

"Goodnight, Xu Chen."

Xu Chen picked up his things and walked toward the door.

He paused for just a second—

then stepped out.

The door closed.

Aum remained where he was.

Standing in the middle of the room.

He looked toward the door.

"This is distance," he said quietly.

But this time—

it did not feel logical.

It felt—

unwelcome.

In the other room, Xu Chen set his things down and sat on the edge of the bed.

He stared ahead, unmoving.

"…I needed space," he muttered.

But the words didn't settle.

Because something else followed.

"…Then why does it feel worse?"

He leaned back slowly, exhaling.

The villa was quiet.

Too quiet.

And for the first time—

distance did not bring clarity.

It only made everything harder to ignore.
