Chapter 33 - A Day Borrowed From Time

Morning arrived softer than the nights that had preceded it.

For the first time in days, the villa did not feel heavy—it felt… paused. As if something had been set aside, just for a while.

Aum stepped out of his room, already dressed, his hair still slightly damp from the shower. The faint scent of soap lingered in the air. He paused when he noticed movement in the kitchen.

Xu Chen stood by the counter, sleeves rolled up, focused on something unusually simple.

Bread.

Butter.

Coffee.

Aum watched quietly for a moment before stepping closer.

"You are preparing breakfast," he said.

Xu Chen glanced at him briefly. "Observant."

Aum tilted his head slightly. "You are applying butter unevenly."

Xu Chen didn't even look up this time. "You're free to make your own."

"I am only stating an observation."

"Keep observing then," Xu Chen replied, sliding a plate toward him. "Eat."

Aum sat down, picking up the slice. "This is… basic."

"It's breakfast, not a banquet."

Aum took a bite. Then another.

After a moment, he added, "It is acceptable."

Xu Chen let out a quiet breath that almost sounded like a laugh.

They ate in a calm silence—not uncomfortable, just… unspoken.

Then Xu Chen said, casually, "Get ready. We're going out."

Aum looked up. "Where?"

"Out of the city."

Aum blinked once. "Today?"

"Yeah."

A pause.

"For what purpose?"

Xu Chen took a sip of his coffee. "Does there have to be one?"

Aum considered that. "There is usually a reason behind actions."

Xu Chen shrugged. "Then consider it a change."

Aum studied him for a moment longer, then nodded. "I will prepare."

The drive began quietly.

The road stretched ahead, framed by distant hills and open skies. The city faded behind them, replaced by a slower, calmer rhythm.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then—

"Why this sudden outing?" Aum asked.

Xu Chen kept his eyes on the road. "You've been here for a while now."

"Yes."

"And you haven't really seen anything outside the villa and the site."

"That is correct."

Xu Chen nodded slightly. "So I thought you should."

Aum looked out the window, watching the scenery shift.

"This is your place," he said.

"Yeah."

"You want me to see it."

Xu Chen didn't reply.

But his grip on the steering wheel tightened—just slightly.

They reached Yuji Island by late morning.

The place felt like a quiet escape—water stretching endlessly, reflecting the sky like glass. The air carried a gentle breeze, cool and clean.

Xu Chen parked the car and stepped out.

Aum followed, his gaze moving across the landscape.

"This is…" he paused, searching for the right word, "…visually balanced."

Xu Chen smirked. "That's one way to say it."

The suite was waiting for them.

As they stepped inside, the space opened into something expansive and serene. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows framed the lake, letting sunlight pour in and reflect off polished wooden floors. Soft curtains swayed gently with the breeze, and the entire room seemed to exist in harmony with the water outside.

The living area was spacious, designed with understated elegance—neutral tones, clean lines, and subtle textures that made everything feel effortless.

Beyond it—

two separate bedrooms.

Each with its own view.

Each facing the lake.

Each equally beautiful.

Aum stood still for a moment, taking it in.

Then his gaze shifted—briefly—to the two doors.

He said nothing.

Xu Chen placed the keys on the table. "You can take whichever room you want."

"They are identical."

"Pretty much."

Aum nodded slowly.

"…Understood."

They settled in quietly.

Bags placed.

Windows opened.

Silence filled the space again—but this time, it felt lighter.

"Freshen up," Xu Chen said. "We'll head out again. There's more to see."

Aum nodded. "Yes."

When they stepped out again—

there was a shift.

Aum wore one of Xu Chen's shirts—a soft white linen piece, slightly loose on him, paired with dark trousers. The fabric moved lightly with the breeze, softening his already composed features. His hair fell naturally, framing his face in a way that made him look… effortlessly striking.

Xu Chen, on the other hand, wore a structured black shirt, sleeves folded neatly, paired with fitted jeans. His sharper features stood out more under the daylight, his presence grounded, defined.

For a brief second—

Xu Chen's gaze lingered on Aum.

Then he looked away.

"Let's go."

The lake was alive with people.

Tourists moved around, taking pictures, laughing, talking. The water shimmered under the sunlight, boats drifting lazily across its surface.

Xu Chen walked slightly ahead.

Aum followed.

There was space between them.

Not large.

But noticeable.

Aum noticed.

But said nothing.

They stopped near the edge of the lake.

Aum looked out, his eyes tracing the movement of light on water.

"This is… calming," he said.

"Yeah," Xu Chen replied.

A group of college girls passed by, their voices light, cheerful.

One of them slowed down.

Then stopped.

Her gaze fixed—on Aum.

She nudged her friend slightly, whispering something before stepping forward.

"Hi," she said, smiling brightly.

Aum turned to her.

"Yes?"

"You're not from around here, right?"

"That is correct."

Her smile widened. "I thought so."

She hesitated for half a second—then went straight to the point.

"Can I get your WeChat?"

Aum blinked once.

"Why?"

The girl laughed lightly. "Just to stay in touch."

Aum considered it.

"That is acceptable," he said.

He reached for his phone.

"Actually—"

Xu Chen's voice cut in.

Aum paused.

Xu Chen stepped closer, his tone calm but firm. "We need to head out. We're running late."

Aum frowned slightly. "We are not—"

"It's urgent," Xu Chen added.

The girl looked between them, slightly confused, then smiled awkwardly. "Oh… okay."

Aum lowered his phone.

"Understood."

They walked away.

A few steps later—

Aum spoke.

"That interaction was normal."

Xu Chen didn't stop walking. "Not always."

"She made a direct request."

"And you agreed just as quickly."

Aum frowned slightly. "There was no reason to decline."

Xu Chen exhaled sharply, stopping now.

"Aum."

Aum looked at him.

"You don't know how people here take things."

"Explain."

Xu Chen ran a hand through his hair, choosing his words.

"Giving someone your contact like that—it's not always casual."

Aum processed that. "She intended further communication."

"Exactly."

"And that is an issue?"

Xu Chen hesitated.

"…It can be."

Aum tilted his head. "Why?"

Xu Chen's jaw tightened slightly.

"Because it gives the wrong idea."

Aum studied him. "What idea?"

Xu Chen looked away for a second.

"…That you're interested."

Aum went still.

"I was not."

"I know," Xu Chen said, quieter now. "But that doesn't matter."

A pause.

"Intent doesn't always matter here."

Aum absorbed that.

"Then the solution is to decline such requests," he said.

"Yes."

"I will do that going forward."

Xu Chen nodded.

"…Good."

They resumed walking.

But something had shifted.

Aum's gaze lingered briefly on Xu Chen.

"There is something else," he said.

Xu Chen glanced at him. "What?"

"You were… unsettled."

Xu Chen let out a short breath. "I wasn't."

"You were," Aum replied calmly. "Your tone changed. Your response was immediate."

Xu Chen didn't answer.

Because denying it further—

would be pointless.

"…Just don't overthink it," he said finally.

Aum nodded.

But his expression didn't fully agree.

Because while he understood the explanation—

he knew—

that was not the entire reason.

And as they walked along the lake—

side by side, yet slightly apart—

Aum realized something quietly.

What had shifted in Xu Chen's tone—

had nothing to do with the girl.

And everything—

to do with him.
