Chapter 5 - Practice

"Dream Path has huge potential… should I focus on Dream Path and keep Flame Path as support in the future?"

Lin Yan felt excited. If he had a choice, he would naturally choose the strongest path. But his knowledge was limited, and he didn't understand the full situation of the Gu World. He didn't know the exact timeline, whether Fang Yuan had already started cultivating or even become an immortal. He knew nothing.

He also didn't know if the great era had begun. For now, he could only move step by step. Staying steady was the most important thing.

"Most likely, the chaotic era hasn't started yet. Otherwise, things wouldn't be this peaceful."

Lin Yan made a rough guess, but he didn't rush to use this Gu as his vital Gu.

Every Gu had different effects. Some consumed lifespan, while others could even harm the user. They couldn't be used carelessly. On top of that, this was only his guess. He still wasn't sure if it was really a Dream Path Gu.

He would wait until he returned to the family, check the records, and make proper preparations before trying anything.

"If I can use these Otherworldly Dao Marks, then I won't be without support. Each one is like a special advantage against Gu Immortals, and it can be my biggest edge."

Lin Yan let the seven-colored mirage worm stay hidden inside his aperture, then got up and walked out of the camp. After finishing his work, he took out the Fire Line Gu and prepared to practice using it.

In the Gu path, refining, raising, and using were all important. If he didn't understand a Gu well—its limits and its strength—it would be easy to make mistakes in battle.

There was no shortcut for this. Only one way: practice. Being in the Western Desert had both good and bad sides. The bad side was that many opportunities from the original story were not useful to him. Very few were in this region, and the ones that existed were extremely hard to obtain, usually needing at least a Rank 6 Gu Immortal.

For Lin Yan, those were too far away. If he got them, it would be luck. If not, it didn't matter. He could only rely on himself.

Even Fang Yuan had help from powerful people, but more than that, he relied on his own effort.

"Fire Line Gu!"

Lin Yan activated the Gu and pointed forward. A red fire line shot out from his fingertip and flew dozens of meters before hitting a rock in the desert.

Boom.

The fist-sized rock shattered instantly, leaving behind a blackened mark.

He continued to tap his finger, sending out more fire lines. They flashed through the air one after another and struck their targets, fast and sharp.

As its name suggested, Fire Line Gu released a straight line of fire. Its function was simple, but it had clear advantages—strong power, long range, and high speed. For a Rank 1 Gu Master, it was almost impossible to dodge.

It was worthy of being a family legacy Gu.

"And the consumption is acceptable," Lin Yan thought. He checked his aperture. Each use of Fire Line Gu consumed about eight percent of his primeval essence, slightly lower than the usual ten percent of normal attack Gu.

But it also had a weakness. The attack was too direct. Once released, it could not change direction. It was easy to use, but hard to master. It worked well on still targets, but against moving ones, it was easy to miss.

He quickly formed a plan. First, practice hitting fixed targets without aiming. Then move on to shooting at moving targets.

"Fire Line Gu works best with a detection-type Gu, like a vision Gu or a sure-hit Gu," he thought.

Soon, after repeated use, his primeval essence ran out. He waited for it to recover before continuing his practice. Using primeval stones to keep going would be too wasteful.

After three rounds of practice, Lin Yan stopped. His body and mind were already tired, and he still had other work to do. More importantly, this was the wilderness. It was full of danger, and he could not push himself too far, or he might not even know how he died.

This scene was seen by his uncle, Shan Shayuan, who felt satisfied with his diligence.

Beside him, a woman in a red dress walked over. She had a calm and graceful presence, with a beautiful face. After watching from a distance, she nodded slightly.

"Not bad. He is steady and knows his limits. With B-grade aptitude, he has a chance to reach Rank 4 in the future."

Shan Shayuan replied respectfully, "He cannot compare to you, leader."

The leader of the caravan was actually a woman. Her name was Shan Xia, the second daughter of the clan leader and a rising talent in the Shan Family.

Shan Xia watched Lin Yan with interest. She was ambitious and wanted to compete for the position of young clan leader, so she needed capable people by her side. She had first valued Shan Shayuan, but now it seemed his nephew was also worth paying attention to.

She said, "We'll be entering the Flame Wolf Desert soon. Stay alert and be careful of wild beasts."

On the other side, Lin Yan had no idea he was being watched. He walked to a patch of sea buckthorn near the edge of the camp, opened his hand, and released the Sand Pit Gu. The small Gu floated unsteadily as it began to gnaw at the plant.

Soon, the surface of the sea buckthorn became full of pits and holes.
