Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: What Lies Beyond

Darkness swallowed everything. Not the kind that hid things—the kind that erased them. Ren stepped forward, but there was no ground beneath his feet, no sound, no air, just nothing. For a moment, he wasn't sure if he was still moving. "…This isn't normal," he muttered. No echo answered. Even his voice felt consumed the moment it left his mouth. The fragments in his hand pulsed faintly, their glow barely holding back the void pressing in. Then—the ground returned. Ren staggered as his boots hit stone again, catching himself quickly as his eyes snapped up. This wasn't the tomb. Or not the same part. The space was vast, endless, a black expanse stretching in every direction yet somehow enclosed. Above him, no ceiling—only shifting darkness like clouds made of shadow. "…Where am I?" "Inside," the voice answered. Ren didn't turn. "…Inside what?" A pause. "Something incomplete." Ren frowned. "…That explains nothing." "Then observe." The darkness shifted. Shapes formed slowly—not solid, but visible. Broken structures. Towers. Pathways. All cracked and suspended in the void like pieces of a shattered world. Ren narrowed his eyes. "…A ruin?" "Remnants." "…Of what?" Silence. Then—"Of what failed." Ren stepped forward carefully. The ground formed beneath each step, reacting to him. "…So I'm walking inside a memory?" "Something close." Ren glanced at the fragments in his hand. They pulsed stronger here, syncing with the space around him. "…This place feels alive." "It is not alive. It is waiting." "…For what?" "For completion." Ren stopped. "…And I'm part of that." "You carry pieces." Ren looked down at the linked fragments. "…Yeah." The space ahead shifted again. The broken structures tried to align, moving unnaturally like something forcing them together—but failing. Each piece cracked and fell apart mid-motion. Again and again. A loop. "…It can't fix itself," Ren said quietly. "No." "…Because something's missing." A pause. "Yes." Ren exhaled slowly. "…And you want me to fix it. The voice didn't answer immediately. The broken world shifted again, fragments rising and falling in slow, uneven motion. Then—"Not fix. Complete." Ren's eyes narrowed. "…That sounds worse." "It is more accurate." Ren let out a quiet breath. "…Figures." The fragments in his hand pulsed again, stronger this time. The reaction wasn't just from him—the space responded. The broken structures trembled, some pieces pulling slightly closer together before cracking apart again. Ren noticed it instantly. "…So they react to this." "Yes." "…Then if I get more…" He didn't finish the sentence. He didn't need to. The voice answered anyway. "The closer this place comes to restoration." "…And the closer I get to becoming whatever you are," Ren muttered. Silence. Then—"Correct." Ren gave a dry laugh. "…At least you're honest." The ground beneath him shifted suddenly. Not forming—breaking. A sharp crack spread outward from his feet. Ren stepped back immediately, but the space didn't stabilize this time. It fractured. The void beneath opened slightly—just enough for something to move. Ren's eyes sharpened. "…Here we go again." The darkness below stirred. Not like before. Not like the echoes. Something heavier. Slower. A shape began to rise from beneath the fractured ground, pulling itself upward like it was dragging its existence into place. Ren didn't move. He watched. The form solidified piece by piece—armor-like plating, cracked and uneven, barely holding together. But unlike the guardians before—this one wasn't stable. Parts of its body flickered in and out, sections missing, reforming, then breaking again. Incomplete. Just like the world around it. "…So this is what happens when something fails to 'complete,'" Ren said quietly. "Yes." The creature lifted its head. Its eyes ignited—but they weren't steady. The light flickered, unstable, like it couldn't fully exist. Then it moved. Not fast. Not precise. But unpredictable. Ren stepped back as its arm lashed out, the strike phasing slightly as it passed through space—solid one moment, intangible the next. The ground shattered where it connected. "…That's annoying," Ren muttered. The fragments pulsed in his hand. Ren adjusted his stance. "…Alright." The creature lunged again. This time—Ren moved first. He stepped inside its range, his hand igniting with controlled energy. He struck. The hit landed—but something was wrong. The energy passed through part of its body, dispersing as if it wasn't fully there. Ren's eyes narrowed. "…Not fully real." "Not fully formed," the voice corrected. The creature retaliated instantly, its arm snapping forward. Ren barely shifted aside, the attack grazing his shoulder. Cold pain spread instantly. "…Ghh—!" He jumped back, putting distance between them. "…So I can't hit it properly." "You can." "…Then how?" Silence. Then—"Make it whole." Ren blinked. "…You want me to fix it so I can kill it?" "Yes." Ren stared at the creature as it staggered slightly, its form flickering again. Parts of it weren't aligning. Its own existence was unstable. Then Ren looked down at the fragments in his hand. They pulsed steadily. Complete pieces. A slow realization formed. "…It's missing something." "Yes." Ren exhaled. "…Then let's test something." The creature lunged again. Ren didn't dodge. He stepped forward. His hand moved—not to strike—but to connect. He drove the fragments toward the unstable core in its chest. For a split second—everything froze. The fragments reacted violently. The creature's body flared, cracks sealing rapidly as energy surged through it. Its form stabilized. Solid. Complete. Ren's eyes widened slightly. "…There it is." The creature roared—louder now, stronger, fully formed. Then it attacked. This time—Ren didn't hesitate. He moved with it. Cleaner. Faster. His energy surged—controlled, focused. He stepped inside its guard and drove his hand forward. Impact. The difference was immediate. The strike didn't pass through. It landed. Hard. Cracks spread instantly across the creature's chest. Ren followed through, pushing more power into the same point. The fractures deepened. The creature staggered. Ren didn't stop. "…Now you can break." One final surge. A clean, focused strike straight into its core. The creature shattered completely. No flicker. No instability. Just gone. Silence returned. Ren stood there, breathing steady. "…So that's the rule," he muttered. "Incomplete things can't be destroyed." "Until they are made whole." Ren looked down at the fragments in his hand again. Their pulse was stronger now. Heavier. "…Yeah," he said quietly. "…This place really wants to be finished." The space around him shifted again. This time—more noticeably. Some of the broken structures held their form a little longer before cracking apart. Progress. Slow. Unstable. But real. Ren lifted his head. His eyes sharper than before. "…Then I guess I'll keep going." Because now— He understood. This wasn't just survival anymore. It was something bigger. And whether he liked it or not— He was already part of it.
