Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: The Door That Breathes

The corridor didn't end. It narrowed. The walls pressed in just enough to make every step feel intentional, like the Hollow itself was guiding him. Ren moved forward without slowing, the fragments in his hand pulsing steadily. Not warning. Not fear. Recognition. "…Yeah," he muttered. "You know where we're going." The air thickened. Not cold—heavy. Pressure built with every step. His core responded, a deep pulse spreading through his chest. It didn't hurt. It resonated. "…This is new." The path finally opened. Not into a chamber. Into a wall. Massive. Smooth. Unbroken—except for a door. If it could be called that. It wasn't carved into the wall. It was the wall, shaped into a curved surface that pulsed faintly like it was breathing. Ren stopped. "…You've got to be kidding me." The fragments pulsed faster. Excited. "…You want me to open that?" No answer. He stepped closer. The pressure increased, pushing against his chest and lungs. The closer he got, the clearer it became. This wasn't just a door. It was a seal. "…So this is what they were hiding." The voice returned, closer than before. "…Part of it." Ren didn't look up. "…You again." "You have come further than expected." "…Don't sound so surprised." "…Most break before this point." Ren exhaled. "…Yeah. I almost did." The door pulsed again. Stronger. The surface rippled slightly, like something inside had shifted. Watching. Waiting. Ren tightened his grip on the fragments. "…What's behind it?" A pause. "…A choice." "…That's not an answer." "It is the only one that matters." Ren shook his head slightly. "…You're really not helpful." The fragments pulsed again. This time, his core answered instantly. For a moment, they aligned perfectly. Ren's eyes narrowed. "…So that's it." He stepped closer until he stood directly in front of the door. The surface reacted immediately. The "breathing" stopped. Everything went still. Then it pulsed. Hard. The vibration passed through him. His core flared—not resisting this time. Matching. "…You're testing me." No reply. But he felt it clearly. This wasn't just about strength. It was about resonance. Ren raised his hand. The fragments glowed faintly, energy stabilizing around his fingers. "…Alright." He pressed his hand against the surface. The door reacted instantly. It didn't open—it shifted. The energy surged, not attacking but connecting. Ren's vision blurred as something pressed against his mind. A question without words. Who are you? Ren's voice was quiet but firm. "…Someone who refuses to stay weak." The pressure increased. The question changed. What do you seek? "…Power." Another pause. Why? Mira's face flashed in his mind. Pale. Weak. Smiling. Ren's expression hardened. "…To protect what I have left." Silence. Heavy. Judging. Then the door pulsed again. Different this time. Approval. A deep grinding sound echoed as the surface began to split inward, layers folding into each other. The seal was opening. Darkness spilled out. Thicker than anything before. Alive. But it didn't attack. It waited. "…You may proceed," the voice said. Ren stared into the opening. For once, he hesitated. Not from fear—but because he felt it. Whatever was beyond this point was different. Final. "…Yeah," he muttered. "Of course it is." He exhaled slowly—then stepped forward into the darkness.
