Chapter 40 - Chapter 37: The Mark Left Behind

Ren didn't move for a while after the figure disappeared. His eyes stayed locked on the empty space, his breathing slow but uneven. His core pulsed quietly in his chest—not violently, not unstable, but different. Lira stepped closer, her voice low. "It's gone." "…Yeah." "You're not chasing it?" Ren let out a faint breath. "…No." That thing wasn't something he could chase. Not yet.

He looked down at his hand. The fragments reacted faintly, a soft flicker running along his fingers. Not leaking. Not slipping. Just… staying. "…It changed something," he said. Lira frowned. "Something good?" "…I don't know yet." That was the problem.

The chamber around them felt quieter now, but not safer. The air still carried that strange weight, like something was watching even after it had left. Lira glanced around, uneasy. "I don't like how silent it is." "…Yeah." Ren finally turned away. "Let's move."

They stepped deeper into the chamber, their footsteps echoing faintly. The walls here were different—less broken, more intact. The runes carved into them were clearer too, glowing faintly like they were still active. Lira noticed it first. "…These weren't like the ones before." Ren nodded. "No. These are still working." "That's not reassuring." "…Not really."

As they moved forward, the ground shifted slightly under Ren's foot. He stopped instantly. "…Wait." Lira froze. "What?" Ren crouched, brushing away a thin layer of dust. Beneath it—lines. Thin. Faint. But precise. "…A formation," he muttered. Lira's expression tightened. "Trap?" "…Maybe." He studied it carefully. It wasn't broken. It wasn't old. It was active.

"…Step where I step," Ren said quietly. "Don't rush." "…Got it."

He moved slowly, placing each step with care, following the faint gaps between the lines. Lira followed closely behind, matching him exactly. The air grew heavier with each step, the faint glow of the runes reacting to their presence. "…I don't like this," she whispered. "…Me neither." But Ren didn't stop.

Halfway through, his core pulsed again. Sharper this time. Not reacting to the runes. Something deeper. "…There's something ahead," he said. "Stronger than before?" "…Different."

They reached the end of the formation without triggering it. The moment Ren stepped off the final line, the glow beneath them faded. Lira exhaled sharply. "…I thought we were dead." "…Not today."

Ahead, the chamber opened into something larger. A wide space, circular, with a structure at the center. Not a chest. Not ruins. Something built. Intentionally.

"…That wasn't here before," Lira said quietly. Ren's eyes narrowed. "No. It wasn't."

They approached carefully. The structure was made of dark stone, smooth and untouched by time. At its center—something floated. A small object, suspended in place, glowing faintly with the same fractured light Ren had seen before.

His core reacted instantly.

Hard.

"…Ren?" Lira said.

He didn't answer immediately. His eyes were fixed on it. "…It's the same." "Same as what?" "…The shard." His voice was quieter now.

The moment he stepped closer, the object pulsed. Not violently. Not aggressively. But in response. Like it recognized him.

"…Don't touch it," Lira warned.

Ren didn't move.

But he didn't step back either.

"…It's calling me," he said.

"That's exactly why you shouldn't touch it."

He knew she was right.

But his core—

It was already reacting.

Stronger than before.

More stable.

More… connected.

Ren slowly raised his hand.

"…Just one second," he muttered.

"Ren—"

Too late.

The moment his fingers touched the object—

The world shifted.

Not the room.

Not the space.

Him.

A surge of energy shot through his body, not wild like before, not unstable. This was different. Controlled. Directed. His core pulsed in perfect rhythm for a single moment.

Then—

Pain.

Sharp.

Deep.

Cracks of light spread faintly across his skin as the energy forced its way through the broken structure of his core.

"GHH—!"

"REN!"

He dropped to one knee, gripping his chest as the surge faded just as quickly as it came.

Silence.

His breathing was heavy.

Uneven.

But—

It didn't collapse.

His core didn't break further.

It held.

Ren slowly looked up.

The object was gone.

"…It disappeared," Lira said, stunned.

Ren clenched his hand.

Mana flickered.

And stayed.

Longer than before.

Stronger than before.

"…No," he said quietly.

"It didn't disappear."

He looked at his hand.

"…It merged."

Lira stared at him. "…That's not better."

Ren let out a weak breath.

"…Yeah."

But deep down—

He knew.

This wasn't random.

This place…

These things…

They were connected to him.

And whatever that figure was—

It had known.

Ren pushed himself to his feet slowly. His body still ached, but his core felt… clearer.

Not fixed.

But changing.

"…We need to leave," Lira said.

"…Yeah."

Because this place—

Wasn't done with him yet.

And neither was whatever was waiting deeper below.
