Chapter 41 - Chapter 38: Echoes That Don’t Belong

Ren didn't speak as they moved. His steps were steady, but his mind wasn't. The pulse in his chest hadn't stopped since the merge. It wasn't painful anymore—just… present. Constant. Lira walked beside him, glancing at him more than the path ahead. "…Say something." "…I'm fine." "You're not fine." "…I'm alive." "That's not the same thing." Ren didn't argue. Because she wasn't wrong.

The chamber behind them faded into darkness as they moved deeper. The runes along the walls grew dimmer, like whatever power remained here was being drained the further they went. "…That thing you touched," Lira said. "Don't touch the next one." Ren let out a faint breath. "…I'll try." "That's not reassuring." "…Yeah."

His core pulsed again. Stronger this time. Ren slowed slightly. "…You feel that?" "No," Lira replied immediately. "Which is bad, because you clearly do." "…It's pulling again." "Pulling you where?" Ren looked ahead into the darkness. "…Forward."

They continued.

The tunnel narrowed, forcing them closer together. The air grew colder, but not in a natural way. It felt empty. Like something had taken more than just heat from this place. Ren's fingers twitched slightly. The fragments reacted again—faint flickers running across his hand without him trying.

"…I don't like this," Lira muttered.

"…Same."

Then—

A sound.

Soft.

Barely there.

Like something shifting just out of sight.

Ren stopped instantly. "…You heard that?" "…Yeah." Lira's voice dropped. "That wasn't the cave."

Silence followed.

Then—

Another sound.

Closer.

A step.

But not theirs.

Ren's eyes narrowed. "…We're not alone." Lira didn't respond this time. She already knew.

The darkness ahead shifted slightly.

Not like a creature moving.

Like something appearing.

Ren felt it before he saw it. His core reacted sharply, a sudden pulse that made his chest tighten.

"…Again," he muttered.

A shape formed in the distance.

Not fully visible.

Not solid.

Just—

There.

"…That's not the same as before," Lira whispered.

"No," Ren said quietly. "It's weaker."

The figure flickered, unstable, like it couldn't fully exist here. Its form stretched unnaturally, then snapped back into place.

"…Echo," Ren said.

"What?"

"…It's not real."

The figure moved.

Slow.

Dragging.

Like it was being pulled into existence instead of choosing to move.

Ren didn't step back this time.

"…Stay behind me," he said.

"Ren—"

"Just stay."

Lira didn't argue.

The figure raised its arm.

The air didn't distort.

Didn't collapse.

But something else happened.

Ren felt it immediately.

His core—

Reacted.

Violently.

"GH—!"

"Ren!"

He dropped to one knee, gripping his chest as the pulse surged out of control.

"…It's interfering," he forced out.

The figure didn't attack again.

It just stood there.

Watching.

Or maybe—

Resonating.

"…It's connected," Ren said, breathing hard.

"To what?" Lira asked.

"…To me."

That was the problem.

The fragment inside him reacted to it like it belonged to the same system.

Same source.

Same origin.

Ren forced himself up.

"…Then I don't fight it like the others."

"What does that mean?!"

"…It means I don't resist."

"Ren, that sounds like a bad idea."

"…Probably."

But he stepped forward anyway.

The figure flickered harder as he approached.

Unstable.

Incomplete.

Like it wasn't meant to exist here.

Ren raised his hand slowly.

No energy.

No attack.

Just—

Contact.

"Ren, don't—!"

Too late.

His hand touched the figure.

Cold.

Empty.

And then—

A surge.

Not outward.

Inward.

Memories.

Not his.

Flashes.

Broken.

A dark space.

Endless.

Fragments floating in nothingness.

And something watching from far below.

Ancient.

Silent.

Waiting.

Ren's eyes widened.

"…What is that…?"

The vision snapped instantly.

He staggered back, breathing hard.

The figure flickered violently—

Then disappeared.

Gone.

Like it had never been there.

Silence returned.

Heavy.

Lira grabbed his arm. "Ren! What happened?!"

He didn't answer immediately.

Because his core—

It was still reacting.

But not like before.

Not chaotic.

Not unstable.

It was…

Responding.

"…That wasn't an enemy," he said quietly.

"Then what was it?"

Ren stared into the darkness ahead.

"…A memory."

Lira frowned. "…Of what?"

Ren's voice dropped.

"…Of something that's still down here."

The tunnel stretched forward.

Deeper.

Darker.

And for the first time—

Ren hesitated.

Not because he was afraid.

But because he understood something important now.

This place—

Wasn't just dangerous.

It was connected to him.

And whatever waited at the bottom—

Had been watching him long before he ever stepped inside.

"…We keep moving," he said.

Lira looked at him like she wanted to argue.

But didn't.

"…Fine," she muttered. "But if you start touching more weird things, I'm knocking you out."

Ren let out a faint breath.

"…Fair."

They moved forward.

But the silence now

Felt alive.
