Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Wolf King

I was standing in the heart of the mountain.

The cavern was vast, its walls glittering with crystals that caught the light of a thousand fires. And in the center of the cavern, waiting for me, was the power that had slept in my blood since the first wolf fell.

It was a wolf. Not like the ancestor who had tested me. This was something older, something wilder, something that had been sleeping since the world was young. It was the size of a mountain, its fur the color of the night sky, its eyes the color of the stars.

"You have come," it said. Its voice was the grinding of stone, the rush of rivers, the howl of wolves at the edge of the world.

"I have come."

"You seek the crown. The power that has slept in your blood since you were born. The thing that the wolves have forgotten."

"I seek to protect my pack."

It laughed. The sound shook the cavern, sent crystals falling from the walls. "You and your pack. Is that all you care about? The wolves who follow you? The woman who loves you?"

"They are my world."

"And the other wolves? The ones who do not follow you? The ones who have forgotten what it means to be wolves? Do you care about them?"

I thought of the scattered packs, the wolves who had been hunted for centuries, the cubs who had never known a world without fear.

"I care about all wolves."

The wolf tilted its head. "Then prove it."

The world shifted. I was no longer in the cavern. I was standing in a place I had never seen. A battlefield, vast and empty, its ground littered with bones. And on the battlefield, waiting for me, were the Lords.

Four of them. The ones who had slept for a thousand years. The ones who were coming for my pack.

"Fight them," the wolf said. "If you are worthy, fight them and win."

I drew my blade. The Lords advanced.

The first was fast, faster than anything I had faced. Its claws reached for my throat, its fangs bared for the kill. I met it blade to claw, the impact jarring my arm, the shockwave sending bones flying.

The second came from behind, its hands closing around my throat. I dropped, rolled, came up with my blade raised. It caught me across the chest, sent me sprawling.

The third was on me before I could rise, its weight pinning me to the ground, its fangs inches from my face.

"Kael," it hissed. "The wolf who would be king. You are nothing. You are a cub playing at power. You cannot fight us. You cannot win."

I looked into its eyes, and for a moment, I saw the truth. I was alone. The pack was far away. Lira was far away. I was alone, in a place that was not real, fighting enemies that could not be killed.

I was afraid. I was terrified. But I was not alone.

The pack was with me. I could feel them, a warmth in my chest, a strength in my blood. Renn. Sera. The twins. Lira. The wolves who had followed me, who had fought beside me, who had trusted me with their lives.

I was not alone. I had never been alone.

The wolf that slept in my blood woke.

The power came like fire, like light, like the dawn breaking over a world that had been dark for too long. It filled me, consumed me, made me something I had never been before.

I threw the Lord off me and rose.

The Lords advanced. They were not afraid. They had been hunting wolves for a thousand years. They had never met a wolf like me.

I met them blade to claw, tooth to fang, will to will. I was faster than I had ever been, stronger than I had ever been, more than I had ever been. The Lords fell before me, one by one, their bodies crumbling to ash, their screams echoing in the empty battlefield.

And when the last one fell, I stood in the center of the carnage, my chest heaving, my blade dripping black blood, and I howled.

The sound rose into the sky, wild and free, and the wolves answered. Not the wolves of my pack, not the wolves of my territory. All wolves. Every wolf who had ever lived, who had ever fought, who had ever survived. They howled with me, a chorus that shook the world.

I was the wolf king. The first in a thousand years. And the wolves were waking.

The world shifted. I was back in the cavern, the ancient wolf before me, its eyes bright with something that might have been pride.

"You have passed," it said. "The trials are complete. You are the wolf king."

I looked at my hands. They were the same. But I was different. I could feel the pack, all of them, not just the wolves of Red Oak, but wolves everywhere. The scattered packs, the lone wolves, the cubs who had never known a home. I could feel them, and they could feel me.

"What now?" I asked.

The wolf smiled. "Now you lead."

It faded. The cavern faded. And I was back at the oak, the moon rising above me, the pack waiting at the border.

I walked toward them, and for the first time in two lives, I was not afraid.
