The sound of Naruto's scream was swallowed by the mist, a raw, ragged cry of pure denial that tore at his throat. He stood at the edge of the bridge, his knuckles white as he gripped the railing, staring down into the empty, churning water below. There was nothing. No sign of the cocoon, no ripple, no trace of Sasuke. He was just… gone.
"Naruto!" Kakashi was at his side in an instant, his firm hand on Naruto's shoulder. "Report. Now. What happened? Where is Sasuke?"
Naruto couldn't answer. His mind was a tempest of horror and rage. The system's cold, final update played on a loop in his head. [ASSET ACQUISITION COMPLETE.] Asset. Not teammate. Not friend. Not rival. Asset. The word was a poison, seeping into his soul and curdling everything he thought he knew. He had been so focused on winning the fight, on being clever, that he hadn't seen the real objective. They hadn't been there to fight. They had been there to collect.
"He… he turned into bugs," Naruto finally choked out, his voice a broken whisper. "Black nanites. They covered him and… and flew away."
Kakashi's visible eye widened, the only outward sign of the shock that must have been coursing through him. He had faced down S-rank missing-nin, but this was something else entirely. This was technology beyond the comprehension of the Five Great Shinobi Villages.
"Sensei!" Sakura's voice, trembling with fear, cut through the heavy air. She and Tazuna were cautiously approaching, the bridge workers huddled together behind them. "The other one… the one you were fighting… he just… dissolved."
Kakashi's gaze snapped to where he had struck his opponent. There was nothing there. No body, no blood, not even a scorch mark from his Lightning Blade. It was as if the man had never existed. The Syndicate didn't just clean up its messes; it erased them.
"Gato!" Tazuna suddenly shouted, pointing a shaking finger towards the far end of the bridge. The portly man, who had been watching the entire spectacle with a look of smug satisfaction, was now backing away in fear.
From the shadows behind Gato, another of the grey-armored agents emerged. This one was different. Taller, slimmer, and moved with an unnerving, liquid grace. There was no face visible behind the smooth, featureless mask, only a single, glowing red line where eyes should be.
"You… you said you were just here to test the boy!" Gato stammered, his bravado gone. "Our deal is done! I paid you!"
The agent said nothing. It simply raised a hand, and Gato froze, his body going rigid. A thin, red beam of light shot from the agent's palm, striking Gato in the chest. There was no explosion, no sound. Gato's body simply… turned to dust, collapsing into a neat pile of grey powder on the wooden planks. His fine suit, now empty, fluttered to the ground.
The agent turned its glowing red gaze towards the remaining hired thugs, who had been watching in growing terror. They didn't even scream. They just dropped their weapons and ran, scrambling off the bridge and into the forest of Wave Country, not stopping until they were out of sight.
The agent ignored them. Its head tilted slightly, as if listening to a distant command. Then, it too dissolved into a swarm of black nanites, which buzzed for a moment before dispersing into the wind.
The bridge fell into a profound, deafening silence. The battle was over. Gato was dead. The mission was, by all technical definitions, a success. The bridge was safe. But Team 7 had never felt more defeated.
The walk back to Tazuna's house was a funeral procession. No one spoke. The weight of Sasuke's absence was a physical presence, a cold ghost walking between them. Sakura stared blankly at the ground, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs. Kakashi walked ahead, his posture rigid, his mind clearly racing through a thousand horrifying possibilities. Naruto trailed behind, his fists clenched so tightly his nails dug into his palms. He wasn't crying anymore. The tears had burned away, replaced by a cold, hard knot of fury in his gut.
Back in the house, Tsunami served them tea, her face etched with worry. She could feel the grief in the room but didn't know its source. Inari sat beside Naruto, trying to offer comfort but finding no words.
Kakashi finally broke the silence. "I've contacted the Hokage." He spoke into his communication device, his voice low and grave. "Yes, Hokage-sama. The mission to protect the bridge is complete… However, we have a critical situation. Uchiha Sasuke has been… abducted by an unknown organization calling themselves the Syndicate. Yes, ma'am. They possess technology far beyond anything we've encountered. They… they turned him into a cocoon of nanites and extracted him."
Naruto listened, his anger simmering. Extracted. Like a mineral. Like a resource.
"Understood," Kakashi said, ending the transmission. He turned to face his remaining students. "The Hokage is issuing an S-rank priority for Sasuke's retrieval. ANBU will be dispatched, but we are the primary witnesses. We are to return to Konoha immediately to debrief."
"Debrief?" Naruto's voice was dangerously quiet. "While they're doing god-knows-what to Sasuke? We're supposed to just go back and talk about it?"
"Naruto, it's protocol," Kakashi said, his tone firm but not unkind. "Rushing in without intelligence is how we lose you, too. We need to know what we're up against."
"I know what we're up against!" Naruto shot to his feet, his chair clattering to the floor. "They're monsters! They turned my teammate into a science experiment! And this… this thing in my head," he jabbed a finger at his own skull, "is part of it! It's their tool! It watched them take him and just gave me a status report!"
He was shouting now, all his pain and fear boiling over. "What's the point of all this power, all these levels and stats, if I can't even protect my own friends?!"
He slammed his fist on the table, the wood cracking under the force. He glared at the wall, as if he could see the system's interface floating there. "You hear me?! You're useless! You're just a leash they put on me! WHERE IS HE?! TELL ME WHERE HE IS!"
He poured every ounce of his will, his rage, his desperate, aching need to find Sasuke into that mental scream. He wasn't asking anymore. He was demanding. He was forcing his chaotic, emotional will onto the cold, logical system, just as he had forced the Syndicate agent to lag with nonsense on the bridge.
For a moment, there was nothing. Then, the interface in his mind flickered. It wasn't the usual blue. It was a deep, urgent crimson, as if his raw emotion had recolored it. New text began to scroll, faster than he had ever seen before.
[EXTERNAL OVERRIDE PROTOCOL DETECTED...] [USER EMOTIONAL THRESHOLD EXCEEDED... INITIATING FORCED QUERY...] [ACCESSING SECURE SYNDICATE DATA-STREAMS...] [FIREWALLS BREACHED...] [ASSET 'SASUKE UCHIHA' LOCATED...]
A new window materialized in his vision, stark and terrifying.
[NEW QUEST ISSUED: ASSET RECOVERY] [PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: INFILTRATE SYNDICATE OUTPOST 'OMEGA' AND RECOVER ASSET 'SASUKE UCHIHA'.] [LOCATION: NORTHERN OUTSKIRTS OF THE LAND OF FIRE - MOUNTAIN RANGE 'THE SILENT CAGE'.] [WARNING: OUTPOST IS HEAVILY FORTIFIED. ASSET IS SCHEDULED FOR 'INTEGRATION'.]
The word "Integration" sent a fresh wave of ice through Naruto's veins. But it was the sub-objective that appeared a second later that made his blood run cold.
[SUB-OBJECTIVE: PREVENT SHARINGAN EXTRACTION.]
