Cherreads

Chapter 25 - Asset Acquisition

The world slowed to a crawl for Naruto. The four words burned into his vision were hotter than any Amaterasu, more chilling than any Ice Release. [TARGET: SASUKE UCHIHA] It wasn't a random attack. It wasn't just about defeating them. It was a targeted acquisition.

"Sasuke! Watch out! He's after your eyes!" Naruto screamed, his voice raw with panic.

The warning came a fraction of a second too late. The Syndicate agent, a man whose face was a blank slate of utter obedience, abandoned all pretense of a general brawl. His movements became laser-focused, a predatory dance aimed solely at the Uchiha heir. He feinted low, then exploded upwards, his fingers elongating into dark, chakra-infused claws aimed directly at Sasuke's face.

Sasuke, still reeling from the previous kick, twisted desperately. The claws raked across his cheek, drawing thin lines of blood, but he had avoided the worst. He landed in a crouch, his Sharingan flaring as he tried to predict the agent's next move. But it was like trying to read a book with all the words scrambled. The agent's chakra flow was unnatural, a corrupted code that his eyes couldn't properly decipher.

"Kakashi-sensei!" Naruto yelled, forming a cross-shaped seal. "Shadow Clone Jutsu!" A dozen Narutos appeared, swarming the agent, not to attack, but to obstruct, to get in the way, to do anything to buy Sasuke a second to breathe.

"Naruto, handle that one! I've got the other!" Kakashi commanded, his voice cutting through the chaos. He had already engaged the second agent, his lightning-charged hand clashing with a void-infused fist in a shower of sparks. The two were a blur of white and black, their battle a microcosm of the larger conflict.

Naruto's clones threw themselves at the agent, but they were little more than annoyances. The agent moved through them with cold efficiency, his strikes precise and lethal, dispelling them with single, well-placed blows. He wasn't wasting energy; he was simply clearing obstacles.

Sasuke pushed himself to his feet, his hand touching the bleeding gash on his cheek. "I don't need your help, dobe," he snarled, though his voice was strained. He activated his full Sharingan, the three tomoe spinning wildly. "Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu!"

A massive sphere of flame roared towards the agent. The man didn't even try to dodge. He simply raised a hand, and a sphere of that same black, void-like chakra expanded in front of him. The fireball slammed into it and vanished, consumed as if by a black hole.

Sasuke's eyes widened in disbelief. His most powerful attack had been nullified completely.

This isn't working, Naruto thought, his mind racing. Brute force is useless. He's systematic, predictable in his unpredictability. He's like a machine. He needed to break the machine. He needed to throw a wrench in the works.

System! he thought, pouring his will into the interface. Analyze him! Find a weakness! Find anything!

For a heart-stopping moment, there was no response. Then, a new window flickered to life in his mind's eye, overlaying his vision of the agent.

Naruto's eyes lit up with understanding. Chaotic input! He can't predict what he can't analyze!

A wild, reckless grin spread across Naruto's face. It was time to do what he did best.

"Hey, bucket-face!" Naruto yelled, pointing at the agent. One of his remaining clones picked up a loose plank of wood and hurled it, not at the agent, but at a nearby crane. The plank clattered uselessly against the metal.

The agent's head tilted, a minute, almost imperceptible pause in his relentless advance. His predictive algorithm was trying to compute the logic of the pointless action.

"Over here!" another clone shouted, tripping over its own feet and face-planting directly in the agent's path.

The agent stepped over the flailing clone without breaking stride, his focus still locked on Sasuke.

"Sasuke! Don't use your big jutsu! Use something small! Something stupid!" Naruto yelled.

Sasuke, though confused and furious, understood the gist. He saw the effect Naruto's erratic behavior was having. The agent was a perfect fighting machine, but only against conventional opponents. He was being thrown off-balance.

"Fine!" Sasuke grunted. He made a simple hand sign. "Fire Style: Phoenix Flower Jutsu!" But instead of a dozen controlled fireballs, he launched them in a completely random, haphazard pattern, some aimed high, some low, some not even at the agent.

The agent's head twitched again. His system was struggling to prioritize. The primary target was Sasuke, but the anomalous attacks were creating computational noise. He batted away a few fireballs, but one clipped his shoulder, singeing the grey armor. It was a minor injury, but it was the first damage he had sustained.

"He's flinching!" Sakura shouted from where she was helping Tazuna and the other workers regroup. "Keep it up!"

Naruto poured more chakra into his clones. "Okay, boys! You know the drill! Be as annoying as possible!"

The bridge descended into madness. Clones ran in circles, arguing with each other. One tried to start a conga line. Another began to passionately describe the recipe for his ultimate ramen. The agent, a creature of cold, hard logic, was being bombarded with utter nonsense. His movements became fractionally slower, more hesitant. His perfect system was being lagged by absurdity.

Sasuke saw his chance. While the agent was distracted by a clone attempting to teach him the sexy jutsu, he shot forward. Not with a powerful kick or a Chidori, but with a simple, basic ninja tool. He flicked his wrist, and a shower of shuriken flew towards the agent.

The agent's system finally processed the threat and raised his guard to block the projectiles. But it was a feint. Hidden among the shuriken was a single, wire-thin senbon, aimed not at the agent's body, but at the joint in his armor at the back of his knee.

The senbon struck home. The agent stumbled, his perfect posture broken for the first time.

"Now, Naruto!" Sasuke yelled.

Naruto was already moving. He had been gathering chakra in his palm, not the stable, rotating sphere of the Rasengan, but a volatile, unstable vortex of wind and his own wild energy. It wasn't a jutsu; it was a bomb.

"Wind Style: Chaotic Palm!"

He slammed his hand onto the agent's chest. There was no grand explosion, just a violent FWOOMP of released pressure, like an overinflated balloon popping. The agent was thrown backward, his armor cracked and smoking, the void-chakra around him flickering erratically.

He landed hard, skidding across the slick wooden planks. For a moment, he lay still. Naruto and Sasuke panted, a wave of relief washing over them. They had done it. They had beaten the machine.

But then, the agent stirred. He pushed himself up, his movements jerky and unnatural. One of his eye lenses was shattered, revealing not a human eye, but a glowing, red optical sensor. He ignored Naruto completely. His primary directive was all that mattered.

He turned his glowing red eye towards Sasuke. [PRIMARY DIRECTIVE: ACQUIRE ASSET. ABORTING COMBAT PROTOCOL. INITIATING EXTRACTION.]

Before either Naruto or Sasuke could react, the agent's body dissolved. It didn't dissipate into smoke or mist. It broke down into a swarm of tiny, black, insect-like nanites that buzzed with a faint, malevolent energy. The swarm surged towards Sasuke, not to attack, but to envelop.

"Sasuke, look out!" Naruto lunged, but he was too slow.

The black cloud swarmed over Sasuke, who cried out in shock and pain as the tiny machines burrowed into his clothes, his skin. He tried to fight them off, but there were too many. They were a plague of technology, a violation of the flesh. In less than a second, they had completely covered him. Then, the black mass compacted, forming a smooth, dark cocoon around the Uchiha.

The cocoon hovered for a moment, then shot off the edge of the bridge like a cannonball, disappearing into the thick, swirling mist below.

"SASUKE!" Naruto's scream of denial was torn from his throat. He ran to the edge of the bridge, staring down into the empty chasm, his heart a cold, heavy stone in his chest. He was gone. They had taken him.

Kakashi, having finally dispatched his own opponent with a brutal Lightning Blade, appeared at his side. "Naruto! What happened? Where's Sasuke?"

Naruto couldn't answer. He could only stare into the mist, his vision blurring with tears of rage and helplessness. He had failed. He had fought the machine, and the machine had still completed its mission.

And then, in the cold, silent emptiness of his mind, the Shinobi System delivered its final, soul-crushing update. It wasn't a quest. It wasn't a warning. It was a status report.
