CHAPTER 63
The First Crossing
He crossed into the Dream World for the first time at the boundary between waking and sleep, which was not where he expected.
He had expected the crossing to happen in deep sleep — in the place where dreams usually lived, the unconscious territory of images and dissolution.
The System's files had indicated otherwise, and the System had been right: the crossing happened at the exact moment of the Spirit Path's engagement, in the shallow, cultivated state between full waking and rest that forty days of three-path cultivation had developed into a specific, reliable internal place. Not trance. Not sleep.
A third condition that had no good word in any living language because it had not been needed in any living language for a very long time.
He was in his room.
Then he was not.
◆ ◆ ◆ DREAM WORLD ◆ ◆ ◆
The first thing that arrived was light.
Not the dock light, not the amber-copper of the morning harbour.
A different quality entirely — deeper, older, the specific luminosity of a sky that had not yet developed the atmospheric filtering of a mature world. He was standing on ground that was real beneath his feet — he felt every grain of it through the Iron Body's enhanced physical awareness — and the ground was dark stone, flat and ancient, in a landscape that extended in every direction without the familiar horizon lines of the world he knew.
The sky above him was extraordinary. Not the sky of any era he recognised from waking history. This was earlier — much earlier.
The stars were different, or rather they were the same stars in different positions, the sky before the slow precession of the equinoxes had moved them to where the current world found them.
The light from them had a quality he had never experienced from the sky above a city or a dock: it was present.
Not distant. Not pinpoint. It fell across the stone landscape with the weight of something that had been here long before anything else and was entirely comfortable with that.
The Dream World Interface appeared at the edge of his awareness, not intrusive, simply present.

He turned, slowly, taking in the full circle of the horizon.
The landscape was not empty. He had expected emptiness — the pristine absence of the pre-human world.
Instead, he found traces: structures in the distance that were not natural formations, too regular for accident, too large for the scale of anything currently known. Not pyramids — older than pyramids. Platforms.
Alignments of stone on a scale that made the stone circles of his own era look like arrangements someone had made in a garden on a pleasant afternoon.
He began walking toward the nearest alignment.
The air tasted clean in a way that was not simply the absence of pollution — it had a density, a richness of oxygen and something else he had no reference point for, that the Sensory Enhancement Suite processed as: this atmosphere is the version before the version you know.
Before certain things were lost from it. Before it was breathed by sufficient numbers of certain beings that it changed in character.
He walked for what the Dream World Interface measured as twenty minutes and what his waking mind would experience as slightly less than three.
At the nearest alignment, he stopped.
The stones were not stones. They were a material his Construction Attunement sense registered with the specific alertness of something encountering a building material it had never previously assessed: not granite, not basalt, not any volcanic or sedimentary rock in his geological reference set.
The Neural Lattice cross-referenced the molecular signature against the Black Technology catalogue's materials section and returned a single result: similar to, but not identical to, the carbon-void composite that Mara had designed for the palace exteriors.
Similar in principle — constructed at the molecular level with deliberate intention — but produced by a different method, older, and without the benefit of a six-hundred-year-future material science catalogue.
Produced by someone who understood what they were doing.
He put his hand on the nearest stone.
The Prophetic Sight Stage 2 responded immediately — not to the future but to the past, which was new.
Not a vision, not a sequence of events. More like a resonance: the specific quality of what had stood here, who had built it, what they had known that was no longer known.
It came as impression rather than image: enormously intelligent, enormously patient, working at timescales that made the Crimson Temple's hundred-and-twelve-year archivists seem like people who had just arrived.
Not human.
Not malevolent.
Gone.
He noted this. He noted the molecular composition of the stone.
He noted the alignment's geometry, which his Neural Lattice mapped against astronomical data and identified as: this structure tracked something in this era's sky that no longer exists in the sky he knew.
Something had moved. Or something had been removed.
He filed these observations in the forty-page notebook section he had labelled: DREAM WORLD — FIRST AGE.
He moved on.

He found what he was looking for forty minutes deeper into the Pre-Adamic site: a fallen section of the alignment, a piece of the Builder Stone separated from its structure, small enough to carry.
He picked it up. It weighed less than its size suggested — the self-reinforcing cellular structure had a density that was distributed differently from conventional rock, efficient rather than heavy.
He held it with everything the Spirit cultivation had given him — focused, present, intent on the transfer.
Then he brought himself back.
◆ ◆ ◆ DREAM WORLD ◆ ◆ ◆
He woke in the good bed in Building Nine with his right hand closed around something.
He opened it.
The stone was there. Dark, smooth, slightly warm, twelve centimetres long and five wide. A piece of the First Age sitting in his palm in his bedroom above a dock in a city that was forty thousand years younger than where it had been ten minutes ago.
He sat up. He looked at it for a long time.
He thought: it transfers. The System told the truth about all of it.
He thought: this is the beginning of a very large development.
He put the stone on the desk next to the archive case and the watercolour print of the dock at dawn. He noted it in the notebook under: Transfer confirmed — Builder Stone, First Age, Pre-Adamic.
He made the coffee. He sat at the desk. The stone sat next to the photograph of his mother on the windowsill and the morning light moved across both of them in the dock's familiar pattern.
He thought: forty pages of notes are not enough. He would need a much larger notebook.
