Chapter 9 - Camp Purification

The morning of their mission dawned clear and cold, with frost still glittering on the grass when Lyonel and his team gathered at the Vance estate's front gates.

Torvin had returned the night before with a detailed map of the mining camp, his hands moving fast as he pointed out key spots.

"The corruption is thickest around the old shaft entrance," he said, rolling out a smaller map across the grass.

"There's a stream that runs through the camp—if we can purify that first, it'll help stop the spread to the villages downstream."

Mina closed her eyes, her purple light flickering as she focused. "I can feel it already," she said softly. "It's stronger than the mill was—like a heavy weight pressing down on everything."

"Aether Logic: Mission parameters confirmed," the skill chimed in. "Primary objective: Purify mining camp soil and water. Secondary objectives: Establish permanent monitoring runes, assist villagers with recovery. Estimated time to completion: 4–6 hours."

"Then let's move out !" Lyonel called out, grinning as he hoisted his pack onto his shoulders. "Seraphina—you got the portable purification stones? Kaelia—your pack sent those root-weave straps for carrying supplies?"

"All packed andready," Kaelia said, patting the large satchel at her side. "Plus Father sent extra bread and dried meat—he said even world-savers need to eat."

The journey to the mining camp took less than two hours, with Torvin leading the way at a steady jog.

They passed through fields where crops had started to wilt, and Mina's purple light pulsed brighter as they drew closer.

"It's right ahead," she said firmly. "Under the old watchtower by the stream."

The mining camp was quiet when they arrived—no sound of laughter or work, just the faint rustle of wind through empty huts.

Livestock lay listlessly in their pens, and the stream that ran through the center of the camp was dark and still.

"Scout report confirmed," Torvin said, his ears swiveling as he scanned the area.

"No hostile activity—just… emptiness. Like the life got sucked right out of the place."

Mina stepped forward, her eyes closed as she let her power flow.

The purple light at her fingertips glowed bright, and she pointed toward the old watchtower at the edge of the camp.

"There. That's where it's coming from. The corruption is pooling under the tower's foundation."

"Aether Logic: Scan complete," the skill reported. "Source is a broken 'Life Weave' rune cluster under the watchtower. Likely damaged when the tower's foundation shifted decades ago."

Lyonel pulled out his carving tools and a large block of purified wood. "Okay team—let's get to work. Torvin, keep an eye on the perimeter. Mina, stay close to me—we'll need you to guide the weave around the corrupted spots. Kaelia—start grounding the area while Seraphina preps the elemental cycle."

They moved toward the watchtower carefully, with Mina leading the way. The closer they got, the darker the soil became—black and crumbly under their feet. Seraphina gasped as she saw a small rabbit lying motionless in the grass nearby.

"It's not dead," Mina said quickly, kneeling beside the animal. "Just… trapped in the corruption. Let me help it."

She held out her hand, and her purple light pulsed gently. The rabbit twitched, then opened its eyes—its fur already looking brighter. It hopped to its feet and nuzzled her hand before bounding off into the tall grass.

"See?" Lyonel grinned. "Your power is perfect for this. Now—let's find the main rune cluster under the tower."

They circled the watchtower, and Torvin pointed to a loose stone near the foundation. "There's a hole here—like something was buried and then dug up again."

Mina knelt beside it, her eyes wide as she focused. "This isit," she said firmly. "The source is right below us—ancient runes that got cracked open when someone dughere."

Lyonel pulled out his largest carving tool and began to carefully excavate the area around the hole. Within minutes, he uncovered a set of ancient runes—faded but still recognizable as Spellweaver work.

"These are exactly like the ones in The Weaving Codex," he said excitedly. "They were supposed to cycle aether through the soil to make crops grow better… but they broke and started pulling corruption instead."

He looked up at his team. "Okay—this is where we test everything we've trained for. Mina, find the broken spots. Kaelia, ground us. Seraphina, get ready to flush out the bad stuff. And… let's make this count."

As the sun climbed high in the sky, the team moved into position.

Torvin stood guard at the edge of the camp, his senses sharp as he watched for any signs of trouble.

Mina closed her eyes, her purple light glowing bright as she traced the broken parts of the weave.

Kaelia pressed her palms to the ground, sending roots spreading deep into the soil to anchor their magic.

Seraphina stood ready, fire and water swirling around her hands like living things.

"On my mark," Lyonel called out, his golden eyes focused on the runes he was carving. "Now!"

Seraphina sent streams of fire and water into the ground.

Kaelia's roots wrapped around the elemental magic, guiding it toward the broken runes.

Mina's purple light pulsed, pushing the corruption away from the pure aether flow.

Lyonel carved runes as fast as he could, silver light connecting everything into a single, steady pattern.

The ground shook slightly, and a warm golden glow spread from the tower's foundation. The dark soil began to lighten, turning brown and rich again. The stream beside the tower started to flow clear, and within minutes, fish were darting through the water.

But Lyonel wasn't done. He carved one final rune into a large stone beside the stream, and silver light spread from it—forming small, glowing shapes that flitted into the air.

"Fireflies?;" Kaelia laughed, watching as the glowing insects danced above the stream.

"Not just fireflies," Lyonel said proudly. "They're 'Harvest Helpers'—they'll glow bright when crops need water or soil needs nutrients. Plus… they're way cooler than boring old warning signs."

As the team stood back to watch their work, villagers from the camp emerged from their homes—their faces filled with wonder as they saw the clear water flowing and the grass turning green again.

Children ran out to chase the glowing fireflies, and Torvin grinned as he watched them play.

"We didit," Seraphina said softly, a wide smile spreading across her face.

"We did," Lyonel agreed, then pointed to the horizon where dark clouds were gathering. "But we've still got work to do. The Whispering Peaks are calling, and Aether Logic says we're almost ready to answer."

As they packed up their supplies and prepared to head back to the estate, Lyonel looked at his team—at Seraphina's confident stance, Kaelia's steady gaze, Mina's growing smile, and Torvin's wagging tail—and knew they were ready for whatever came next.

"Next stop," he called out, grinning as he hoisted his pack onto his shoulders. "The Whispering Peaks. And this time… we're bringing our own aether to talk back."
