Chapter 8 - Bride of the Shadow King

Chapter 8: When Darkness Awakens

The night felt unusually restless.

Liora stood near the tall window of her room, staring at the dark horizon beyond the castle walls. The sky was heavy with dark clouds, and the wind howled like whispers of something unseen.

She wrapped her arms around herself.

Ever since the Shadow King told her about his past, her mind hadn't been at peace.

He was once human.

He tried to save everyone.

But then…

He chose darkness.

Her chest tightened.

"I don't think you're a monster…" she whispered softly.

Suddenly—

A loud tremor shook the castle.

Liora gasped.

The floor beneath her feet vibrated again.

Boom.

Another tremor.

"What was that?"

She rushed toward the door and opened it.

The hallway shadows were moving violently.

This had never happened before.

Her heartbeat quickened.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

She stepped into the hallway.

The shadows twisted along the walls like they were alive… frightened… or angry.

Then—

A distant roar echoed through the castle.

Her heart nearly stopped.

It wasn't a beast.

It sounded… human.

No…

It sounded like him.

"The Shadow King…?"

Without thinking, she ran toward the sound.

The deeper she went into the castle, the stronger the tremors became.

Torches flickered.

Walls cracked slightly.

Dark energy pulsed through the air.

Her breath grew uneven.

She finally reached the throne hall.

The massive doors stood half-open.

Dark smoke leaked from inside.

Her hands trembled.

Slowly…

She pushed the door open.

Her eyes widened instantly.

The throne hall was in chaos.

Shadows twisted wildly across the floor.

Dark energy spiraled through the air.

And in the center—

The Shadow King stood.

But something was wrong.

Very wrong.

His armor had partially formed around him.

Dark spikes extended from his shoulders.

His eyes glowed brighter than ever.

And shadows swirled around him violently.

He looked… unstable.

Her breath caught.

"Shadow King…?"

He didn't respond.

His head was lowered.

His body trembled slightly.

Suddenly—

A powerful surge of darkness exploded outward.

Liora stumbled backward.

Her heart pounded.

He slowly raised his head.

His glowing eyes locked onto her.

For a moment—

She felt fear.

Pure fear.

His gaze felt colder than ever.

Dangerous.

Uncontrolled.

"Liora…"

His voice sounded distorted.

Like two voices speaking at once.

Her hands trembled.

"What's happening to you?"

The shadows around him grew stronger.

"I told you… to stay away…"

His voice sounded strained.

"I heard you… I was worried—"

"Leave."

The word came out sharp.

Her chest tightened.

"But—"

"Now."

The darkness surged again.

The floor cracked beneath him.

His body shook.

She realized.

He was losing control.

She shook her head.

"No…"

Her voice trembled.

"You're in pain…"

"Leave!"

A massive wave of darkness shot toward her.

Her eyes widened.

But before it reached her—

Her hand glowed.

Light burst from her palm.

The darkness stopped.

Both of them froze.

The light surrounded her gently.

The shadows retreated slightly.

The Shadow King stared at her.

Something flickered in his eyes.

Pain.

Fear.

"…No."

His voice dropped.

"You shouldn't be here…"

She stepped forward slowly.

"I'm not leaving you."

His eyes widened slightly.

"You're… not afraid?"

Her heart pounded.

"I should be."

She swallowed.

"But I'm not."

Silence.

The shadows around him trembled.

"You don't understand…"

His voice sounded broken.

"I'm dangerous right now."

She shook her head.

"You're hurting."

He clenched his fist.

"That's why you should leave."

She stepped closer.

"I won't."

Her light grew brighter.

The darkness around him hissed.

He stepped back instinctively.

The light was hurting him.

Her eyes widened.

"I… I'm sorry—"

But before she could stop—

The light expanded.

The shadows retreated further.

He groaned slightly.

Her heart broke.

"No… I don't want to hurt you!"

She tried to control the light.

But it grew stronger.

The throne hall filled with glowing warmth.

The darkness began to crack.

The Shadow King fell to one knee.

Her breath caught.

"Stop…"

His voice sounded weak.

She panicked.

"I don't know how!"

The light pulsed again.

Then—

Suddenly—

He grabbed her wrist.

Her breath caught.

His hand was cold.

His grip firm.

Their eyes met.

His glowing red eyes softened slightly.

"Liora…"

Her heart skipped.

"Focus…"

She nodded quickly.

"Okay…"

"Calm your heart."

She closed her eyes.

Her breathing slowed.

The light began to fade.

Slowly…

Gently…

Until it disappeared.

Silence returned.

The shadows settled.

The tremors stopped.

Her eyes opened.

The Shadow King still held her wrist.

But he looked… exhausted.

His armor faded.

His eyes dimmed slightly.

"You… stopped it…"

Her voice was soft.

He released her slowly.

"Yes…"

He stood carefully.

Her chest tightened.

"You almost lost control…"

He didn't deny it.

"It happens… sometimes."

Her eyes widened.

"Sometimes?"

He looked away.

"The darkness inside me… isn't stable."

Her heart sank.

"So… you could lose control again?"

"Yes."

Fear crept into her chest.

"And if you do…?"

His expression hardened.

"I might destroy everything."

Her breath stopped.

Silence filled the throne hall.

Her hands trembled slightly.

Then—

She stepped closer.

"I'll stop you."

His eyes widened.

"You…?"

She nodded.

"My light… can calm you."

He stared at her.

For a long moment.

"You shouldn't take that responsibility."

Her voice softened.

"But I want to."

Silence.

Something changed in his eyes again.

Something fragile.

Something dangerous.

"You trust me… even after seeing this?"

Her heart beat faster.

"Yes."

He looked at her.

Longer than before.

Then—

"You're foolish."

She smiled faintly.

"Maybe."

But she didn't step back.

He turned away slowly.

"Go back to your room."

She nodded.

But before she left—

"Shadow King…"

He paused.

"Yes?"

"You're not alone anymore."

Silence filled the hall.

He didn't respond.

But his shadow flickered.

And for the first time—

The darkness inside him…

Hesitated.
