Chapter 23 - Bride of the Shadow King

Chapter 23: The Whisper of Darkness

The sky above the Shadow Kingdom remained unusually quiet.

After the attack from Kael's followers, the castle guards doubled their patrol. Dark knights moved along the castle walls, their armor reflecting the dim moonlight.

Inside the castle, Liora sat quietly near the window.

She couldn't stop thinking about what happened earlier.

They came for me…

Her fingers tightened slightly.

She looked down at her hands. A faint glow still flickered from her palm.

"I'm getting stronger…"

But instead of feeling relieved, she felt uneasy.

Because if she grew stronger—

So did the danger around her.

A soft knock came from the door.

Before she could answer, the door opened slowly.

The Shadow King stepped inside.

Her heart skipped.

"You didn't sleep."

He noticed instantly.

She smiled faintly.

"I couldn't."

He walked closer, his gaze calm but sharp.

"You're thinking about today."

She nodded slowly.

"They said… Kael wants me."

Silence filled the room.

The Shadow King's expression darkened.

"...Yes."

Her chest tightened.

"Why?"

He hesitated.

For a moment, he looked like he was deciding something.

Then he spoke quietly.

"Because your power… is dangerous."

She frowned slightly.

"Dangerous?"

"You can destroy darkness."

Her eyes widened.

"Destroy… darkness?"

He nodded.

"Your light… is the only thing that can oppose Kael."

Her heart began beating faster.

"So… that's why they came?"

"Yes."

She looked down.

That meant—

She wasn't just caught in the middle.

She was part of the war.

Her voice softened.

"...And you?"

He looked at her.

"What about me?"

"Can my power… hurt you?"

Silence.

The air felt heavy.

Finally—

"...Yes."

Her heart tightened.

She didn't know why.

But hearing that—

Hurt.

He noticed her expression.

"...But I'm not afraid."

She looked up.

"You're not?"

He shook his head.

"...Because I trust you."

Her eyes widened.

Trust.

The word felt warm.

But also fragile.

She smiled softly.

"...Thank you."

Later that night—

The castle fell silent.

The torches dimmed.

The shadows grew deeper.

Liora lay in bed, staring at the ceiling.

Sleep refused to come.

Her mind kept replaying everything.

Kael.

Her power.

The Shadow King.

And his words—

"I trust you."

Her heart beat softly.

Suddenly—

The room grew colder.

Her breath froze slightly.

She sat up slowly.

Something felt wrong.

The shadows in the room moved unnaturally.

Her eyes widened.

"...Hello?"

No response.

Then—

A whisper echoed.

"Liora…"

Her heart pounded.

"Who's there?"

The shadows shifted.

Dark mist formed near the corner.

She stepped back slowly.

The whisper returned.

"Your light… belongs to me…"

Her chest tightened.

Kael.

She knew instantly.

The darkness moved closer.

Her light flickered automatically.

"Stay back!"

The darkness laughed softly.

"You cannot escape…"

The mist reached toward her.

Suddenly—

The door burst open.

The Shadow King rushed inside.

Darkness exploded from his body.

The mist recoiled instantly.

"Leave."

His voice turned cold.

The dark mist trembled.

"This isn't over…"

The darkness vanished.

Silence returned.

Liora's breathing remained uneven.

The Shadow King stepped closer.

"Are you hurt?"

She shook her head.

"No…"

But her hands trembled.

He noticed.

He gently held her hand.

Warm darkness surrounded her.

Her trembling stopped slowly.

"He can reach you… even from afar."

Her eyes widened.

"That means…"

"He's getting stronger."

She swallowed slowly.

The fear returned.

"...Will he come again?"

"Yes."

Her heart sank.

But he tightened his hold slightly.

"I won't let him touch you."

Her chest warmed.

She nodded slowly.

"...Okay."

They remained silent.

Neither let go.

Then—

The shadow wolf entered quietly.

It jumped onto the bed and sat beside Liora.

She smiled softly.

"You're protecting me too?"

The wolf wagged its tail.

The Shadow King watched quietly.

Then—

He released her hand slowly.

"You should rest."

She nodded.

"But…"

He paused.

"What?"

"...Will you stay?"

Silence filled the room.

He looked at her.

Her eyes held quiet fear.

After a moment—

He nodded.

"...Alright."

She smiled softly.

He sat beside the window.

The moonlight touched his face.

Liora lay back slowly.

Her eyes slowly closed.

For the first time—

She felt safe.

But outside—

Far beyond the Shadow Kingdom—

A dark figure stood on a cliff.

Kael.

His eyes glowed crimson.

"So… she's awakening."

Dark energy swirled around him.

"Interesting…"

He smiled slowly.

"The game is beginning."

Lightning cracked across the sky.

Dark creatures gathered below him.

"Prepare…"

His voice echoed.

"The Shadow King will fall soon."

Back inside the castle—

Liora slept peacefully.

But suddenly—

Her light glowed faintly.

The Shadow King noticed.

His eyes narrowed.

"...Your power…"

The light flickered.

Then—

A faint symbol appeared on her wrist.

Ancient.

Glowing.

His eyes widened slightly.

"...The Light Seal."

The glow faded.

Liora stirred slightly.

But didn't wake.

The Shadow King looked at her quietly.

If the Light Seal awakened…

That meant—

The prophecy had begun.

And soon—

She would face a choice.

Save him.

Or kill him.
