Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Quiet Fractures

The penthouse was wrapped in deep midnight silence, broken only by the faint hum of the city far below and the steady rhythm of Guàn Jǐngchén's breathing.

Lin Yuè lay awake, curled against the CEO's chest, one arm draped possessively over his waist. The silk pajama top had ridden up again, and Guàn Jǐngchén's warm palm rested flat against the bare skin of his lower back, fingers occasionally flexing as if even in sleep he refused to let go.

Every slow stroke of those fingers sent conflicting waves through Lin Yuè — comfort, guilt, and a dangerous spark of real desire.

He tilted his head slightly, studying the sharp lines of Guàn Jǐngchén's face in the dim glow of the skyline. In sleep, the ruthless CEO looked almost vulnerable — brows relaxed, lips slightly parted. The man who had hunted Eclipse for years now held the very ghost in his arms without knowing it.

Lin Yuè's chest tightened.

*How did it come to this?*

He had planned everything so carefully: infiltrate, gather intel, plant the final backdoor, disappear before the net closed. Instead, he was here — wearing the man's clothes, sleeping in his bed, kissing him like he meant it.

Guàn Jǐngchén stirred, pulling Lin Yuè closer with a low, sleepy sound. His lips brushed the top of Lin Yuè's head in an unconscious kiss.

"Stay…" he mumbled, voice thick with sleep.

Lin Yuè's throat closed. He whispered back, barely audible, "I'm here."

Morning came too soon.

Guàn Jǐngchén woke first, pressing slow, open-mouthed kisses along Lin Yuè's neck until the younger man shivered awake with a soft gasp.

"Morning," Guàn Jǐngchén murmured against his skin, voice still husky. One hand slid under the silk top, mapping the curve of Lin Yuè's waist with deliberate possessiveness. "You slept well?"

Lin Yuè nodded, cheeks flushing as the CEO's thumb brushed a sensitive spot. "Better than I have in years."

Guàn Jǐngchén's eyes darkened with satisfaction. He rolled them so Lin Yuè was pinned gently beneath him, forearms braced on either side of his head.

"Good," he said, leaning down to capture his lips in a deep, unhurried kiss. Lin Yuè arched into it, hands sliding up to clutch broad shoulders. The kiss grew heated — tongues tangling, bodies pressing closer, Guàn Jǐngchén's hips shifting with clear intent.

Just as Lin Yuè's breath began to hitch, Guàn Jǐngchén pulled back slightly, forehead resting against his.

"I have to go in early today," he said regretfully. "There's something I need to check personally."

Lin Yuè's fingers tightened on his shoulders. "The old case?"

Guàn Jǐngchén hesitated, then nodded. "Yes. The signature match is too close to ignore. I'm pulling old logs from five years ago."

Lin Yuè's stomach dropped, but he kept his expression soft and concerned. "Be careful… I don't want anything to happen to you."

The CEO searched his face for a long moment, eyes intense. Then he kissed him again — slower, almost tender.

"You worry about me?" he asked against Lin Yuè's lips.

"Every day now," Lin Yuè admitted quietly.

Guàn Jǐngchén's expression softened into something raw and unguarded. "Then stay safe for me too. I'll be back by evening. We'll continue where we left off."

He dressed quickly, but before leaving, he cupped Lin Yuè's face with both hands and pressed one final, claiming kiss to his forehead.

"Mine," he whispered, almost to himself.

Once the door clicked shut behind him, Lin Yuè lay still for several seconds, staring at the ceiling.

Then he sat up, the soft, innocent expression melting away completely.

He moved to the study, fingers flying across the hidden secondary tablet he'd smuggled in. The backdoor he planted days ago was still active. He watched in real time as Guàn Jǐngchén accessed the old Eclipse files at the office.

Lines of code scrolled. Comparison algorithms ran. The similarity percentage climbed slowly — 87%… 91%… 94%.

Lin Yuè's jaw tightened.

He could delete the traces now. Erase the connection. Disappear tonight and never look back.

But his fingers hovered over the delete command… and didn't move.

Instead, he opened a new encrypted window and typed a single anonymous message — the same style he'd used years ago:

*You're getting warmer, Jǐngchén.

But some ghosts don't want to stay hidden anymore.*

He queued it to send in three hours — just enough time for the CEO to dig deeper.

Then Lin Yuè closed everything, slipped back into the innocent mask, and curled up on the couch with a soft blanket, waiting like the good, harmless boy he pretended to be.

When Guàn Jǐngchén returned that evening, tension radiating from every line of his body, Lin Yuè greeted him at the door with wide, worried eyes and a shy smile.

"Welcome home," he said softly, stepping forward to hug him.

Guàn Jǐngchén pulled him close, arms wrapping around him like steel bands.

"Something's wrong," Lin Yuè whispered against his chest. "Tell me."

The CEO buried his face in Lin Yuè's hair, voice low and strained.

"The ghost I've been hunting… I think he's closer than I realized."

Lin Yuè closed his eyes, heart pounding with equal parts fear and thrill.

*Closer than you know.*
