Chapter 5 - The Announcement

The news broke faster than Seo-yeon expected.

It didn't begin as a whisper.

It began as an explosion.

By the time she stepped out of the elevator that morning, her phone was already vibrating nonstop in her hand. Notifications flooded her screen one after another, stacking so quickly she couldn't even read them properly.

Emails.

Messages.

News alerts.

Her name.

His name.

Together.

Her chest tightened as she opened the first headline.

"Haneul Group CEO Kang Ji-hoon Announces Sudden Marriage."

Her fingers froze for a moment.

Then she opened another.

"Mystery Woman Identified as Han Seo-yeon."

Another.

"Who Is the Woman Who Captured Kang Ji-hoon's Heart?"

Heart.

She let out a quiet breath.

If only they knew.

"Miss Han?"

The receptionist's voice snapped her out of her thoughts.

Seo-yeon looked up.

The woman's usual calm expression now carried a hint of curiosity, even respect.

"Mr. Kang is waiting for you."

Of course he was.

Seo-yeon nodded once and walked forward.

The hallway felt different today.

Not just quiet.

Watching.

As if everyone already knew.

As if every step she took was being measured.

Judged.

She kept her posture straight.

Her expression calm.

If this was her new life, then she would face it properly.

The office doors opened.

Ji-hoon stood by the window, just like always.

Unmoving.

Untouched by the chaos outside.

"You saw the news," he said without turning.

"Yes."

Her voice remained steady.

Even if her heart wasn't.

"They move quickly," she added.

"They always do."

He turned slowly.

His gaze landed on her.

Sharp.

Focused.

As if everything else in the world didn't matter at that moment.

"You're here early," he said.

"I didn't want to be late."

A faint shift crossed his expression.

Approval.

"Good."

Silence followed.

Not awkward.

Just… heavy.

Seo-yeon stepped further into the room.

"My phone hasn't stopped ringing," she said. "People are already asking questions."

"They will continue to," he replied calmly. "You'll need to get used to it."

"I figured."

Her fingers tightened slightly around her phone.

"This is bigger than I expected."

"It always is."

There was something in the way he said it.

Experience.

Control.

As if he had lived in this world long enough to stop being surprised by it.

A knock interrupted the silence.

"Come in," Ji-hoon said.

The door opened.

And she walked in.

Choi Soo-jin.

Seo-yeon recognized her instantly, even without introduction.

Elegant.

Poised.

Beautiful in a way that felt deliberate.

Her outfit was perfectly styled, her posture confident, her presence commanding attention without effort.

But it wasn't her appearance that stood out the most.

It was her gaze.

Sharp.

Assessing.

And the moment it landed on Seo-yeon, something cold flickered beneath it.

"Ji-hoon," Soo-jin said smoothly, her voice soft but controlled.

Then her eyes shifted fully to Seo-yeon.

"And you must be the reason the entire company is in chaos this morning."

The words were polite.

But the tone wasn't.

Seo-yeon held her gaze calmly.

"Han Seo-yeon."

Soo-jin smiled slightly.

"I know who you are."

Of course she did.

Everyone did now.

Ji-hoon stepped forward slightly.

"Choi Soo-jin. Executive Director."

"I've heard of you," Seo-yeon said.

It was true.

Even before today, Soo-jin's name carried weight in business circles.

Powerful.

Connected.

Respected.

And now…

Clearly not pleased.

Soo-jin crossed her arms lightly, her gaze shifting between them.

"I assume the announcement is real," she said.

"It is," Ji-hoon replied.

"And you didn't think to inform the board before making such a decision?"

"I informed them."

"After the fact."

"That was sufficient."

Her expression tightened slightly.

But only for a second.

She recovered quickly.

It was obvious.

She wasn't used to being handled that way.

"And her?" Soo-jin asked, glancing at Seo-yeon again. "Where exactly does she fit into all of this?"

Seo-yeon didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Ji-hoon did.

"She's my wife."

The words landed heavily.

Firm.

Final.

Soo-jin's smile didn't fade.

But something behind it did.

"I see."

Silence stretched.

Thin.

Sharp.

Then Soo-jin stepped closer.

Not to Ji-hoon.

To Seo-yeon.

The movement was subtle.

But intentional.

"You must be very special," she said softly.

Seo-yeon met her gaze without hesitation.

"I don't think that's the word I would use."

A flicker of surprise crossed Soo-jin's eyes.

Then interest.

"That's honest," she said.

"I prefer it that way."

Soo-jin studied her for a moment longer.

Then smiled again.

This time slightly different.

Less polite.

More curious.

"Well," she said, stepping back, "this will certainly be… interesting."

After she left, the room felt quieter.

But not lighter.

Seo-yeon exhaled slowly.

"She doesn't like me."

Ji-hoon didn't respond immediately.

Then

"She doesn't like unpredictability."

"That's not the same thing."

"No," he said calmly. "But in this case, it is."

Seo-yeon turned slightly toward him.

"Was she expecting to marry you?"

The question came out more direct than she intended.

Ji-hoon's gaze remained steady.

"That was never discussed."

"But considered?"

A pause.

Then

"By others."

That was enough of an answer.

Seo-yeon nodded slightly.

"I see."

Her phone buzzed again.

She glanced down.

Another call.

Another unknown number.

"This is going to be a problem," she said.

"It's part of the role."

"I didn't realize the role included public scrutiny this quickly."

Ji-hoon walked toward his desk, picking up a tablet.

"You'll have media training," he said. "Interviews will be controlled. Appearances scheduled."

"You've already planned everything."

"I always do."

She studied him for a moment.

"You really treat this like business."

His eyes met hers.

"And you don't?"

Her breath caught slightly.

"I'm trying to."

A brief silence passed between them.

Then he spoke again.

"You'll need to move."

She blinked.

"Move?"

"You can't stay where you are."

Her chest tightened slightly.

"My family…"

"They'll be taken care of."

"I didn't ask for that."

"You don't have to."

The words were simple.

But they carried weight.

Control.

Responsibility.

Power.

Seo-yeon looked away for a moment.

This world.

His world.

It moved fast.

Too fast.

And she was already in it.

"When do I move?" she asked quietly.

"Today."

Her eyes widened slightly.

"Today?"

"I told you. I don't delay."

Of course he didn't.

She let out a slow breath.

"Alright."

As she turned to leave, Ji-hoon's voice stopped her again.

"Seo-yeon."

She paused.

Then turned.

His gaze was on her.

Not cold.

Not distant.

But something else.

Something she couldn't quite name.

"This won't be easy," he said.

She held his gaze.

"I didn't expect it to be."

A faint pause.

Then

"Good."

When she stepped out of the office, everything felt different.

Not just the building.

Not just the people watching her more closely now.

But her.

Her life.

Her choices.

Her future.

Everything had shifted.

And there was no going back.

As she walked through the hallway, whispers followed.

Quiet.

Curious.

Judging.

But she didn't stop.

Didn't react.

Didn't break.

Because she knew one thing now.

This wasn't just about survival anymore.

It was about stepping into a world where every move mattered.

Every word mattered.

Every mistake mattered.

And standing at the center of it all

Was Kang Ji-hoon.

Her husband.

And somehow

That felt more dangerous than anything else.
