Chapter 8 - Hidden Deals

The forest had transformed. Shadows stretched like claws across the narrow path, and the air smelled damp, earthy, and foreboding. Seo-yeon could feel the tension coiling inside her chest. Every sense was heightened—every snap of a twig, every rustle of leaves, every distant sound of water dripping from moss-covered branches. It all seemed magnified.

Ji-hoon was silent beside her, moving with a predator's grace, eyes scanning every shadow. His hand was close enough to grab hers, though he didn't, as if knowing the moment she needed to reach for him would come naturally. She didn't take it yet. Part of her still had to prove she could face this herself.

Adrian, meanwhile, walked slowly toward them, almost leisurely, a smug smile playing across his features. "Seo-yeon," he said softly, "you've changed. But the fire in your eyes… that's the same as it always was."

She swallowed hard, trying to keep her voice steady. "Why are you here, Adrian? What do you want?"

"Want?" He laughed, a sound that made her skin crawl. "I don't want. I simply exist where everything started. Where truths were hidden. Where choices were made that you didn't even know existed."

Ji-hoon's eyes darkened. "Step closer, and I will make sure you regret it."

Adrian tilted his head, amused. "Careful, Ji-hoon. Emotions cloud judgment, and right now, Seo-yeon's emotions are as thick as the night itself."

Seo-yeon's stomach twisted. That night of the fire, her father's pleas, the letters, Ji-hoon's secrecy—all of it surged back in a wave of confusion and anger. She wanted answers, but the danger surrounding them made it impossible to think straight.

Ji-hoon crouched slightly, signaling her to do the same. "Stay low," he murmured. His hand brushed hers as he moved slightly ahead, protective but careful not to touch her fully—his control extending even to his restraint.

Seo-yeon took a deep breath and followed. Her heart thumped violently against her ribs, but she tried to focus on the path ahead. Every step was calculated. Every movement mattered.

"Your father…" she whispered. "Why did he give you Haneul Group shares? Why involve you?"

Ji-hoon glanced at her. His expression softened, almost painfully human for a moment. "To protect you. He knew Adrian would return. He knew you would be in danger. I promised him I would ensure your safety, no matter the cost."

Seo-yeon's mind reeled. The idea that her father had made a deal—had trusted Ji-hoon with her life and with company secrets—was overwhelming. And yet, something in Ji-hoon's tone told her it was deeper than business.

"I don't understand," she said quietly. "Why now? Why did Adrian show up here?"

Adrian's voice cut through the tension. "Because the time has come for truths to collide with choices, Seo-yeon. You wanted answers, yes? Well, here they are."

A sudden noise—a rustle of leaves followed by a low growl—made them all freeze.

Ji-hoon's hand went instinctively to the small knife at his belt, but it was already too late. Figures moved from the shadows—four men, dressed in black, faces partially obscured, their eyes cold and calculating. They circled slowly, herding the three of them into a tighter clearing.

Seo-yeon's pulse raced. Fear coiled like a living thing in her chest. "Ji-hoon… who are they?"

Ji-hoon's jaw tightened. "The people your father feared. The ones he warned me about."

Her mind spun. "People he feared…? What could they possibly want with me?"

Adrian's smirk returned. "It's simple, really. You're the key, Seo-yeon. The key to everything your father tried to protect. And unfortunately… you've wandered right into the wrong forest at the wrong time."

A branch snapped behind her, making her flinch. Ji-hoon stepped in front, his protective instincts taking over. "Stay behind me," he said firmly. His calm was almost frightening, but comforting at the same time.

Seo-yeon nodded, though her fingers trembled around her bag strap. She felt powerless in a way she hadn't since the fire years ago. But unlike that night, she had Ji-hoon by her side, and part of her drew strength from it.

Adrian tilted his head toward the attackers. "You see, Ji-hoon, they don't play games. They follow orders. And orders were given long ago."

Ji-hoon's expression hardened. "Orders or not, no one touches her."

The men advanced slowly, moving with precision. Ji-hoon glanced at Seo-yeon. "Run when I give the signal. And trust me—don't hesitate."

Her stomach knotted. She hated running. She hated the thought of leaving things unresolved. But she nodded. She trusted him. She had to.

Adrian stepped forward, his gaze fixed on her. "You have questions, Seo-yeon. I can see them. You want the truth, but the truth has a price. Are you willing to pay it?"

Her breath caught. "I… I want answers," she whispered.

"Then watch closely," Adrian said. His tone had shifted subtly, almost threateningly. "Because the moment you step forward, there is no going back."

Ji-hoon's eyes flicked to the attackers, then back at her. "Now!" he shouted.

Instinctively, Seo-yeon sprinted, following Ji-hoon through the thick underbrush. The attackers gave chase, their footsteps crunching against fallen leaves and twigs. Her heart pounded violently as adrenaline surged through her veins.

The forest seemed alive around them—branches snagging at clothes, roots threatening to trip them, darkness stretching out like a tunnel with no end. And yet, Ji-hoon ran with effortless precision, guiding her through the maze, protective, commanding, unshakable.

A shot rang out. Bullets whizzed past them, splintering branches. Seo-yeon dove behind a tree, shaking violently. Ji-hoon pressed against her, his body a shield. "Stay down!" he barked.

Her ears rang. Her mind was spinning. Fear, anger, confusion—emotions collided in a storm inside her. And still, her questions remained unanswered.

Adrian's voice floated through the chaos. "You think Ji-hoon can protect you forever? He made a promise, yes. But promises… can break."

Seo-yeon's blood ran cold. "Why is he doing this?!" she screamed internally. Everything about Adrian—his calm, his control, his obsession—made her feel like a trapped animal.

Ji-hoon tightened his grip on her arm. "We have to move. Now!"

They ran again, deeper into the forest, branches slashing at their faces, leaves sticking to sweat-dampened skin. Her lungs burned. Her legs ached. But she refused to stop. She refused to look back.

And then, through the chaos, something caught her eye—a small clearing ahead. Moonlight spilled across it like a spotlight. A chance. A moment.

Ji-hoon slowed, peering ahead. "There," he whispered. "We can make it across and lose them in the ravine."

Seo-yeon nodded, trusting him implicitly. She pushed herself harder, sprinting alongside him. Her fingers brushed his hand for balance, and though it was brief, the touch sparked something she hadn't expected—a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there was a tether, a lifeline.

As they reached the edge of the clearing, a figure stepped out from behind a tree.

It wasn't one of the attackers.

It was someone taller, cloaked, and utterly silent.

The forest held its breath.

Ji-hoon froze, Seo-yeon froze, even the attackers seemed to hesitate.

The figure raised a hand.

And then spoke.

"Going somewhere?"

Seo-yeon's heart stopped. She knew that voice.

It was someone she never thought she'd see here. Someone who could change everything.
