Chapter 12 - Beneath the truth

The fall didn't last long.

But it felt like it did.

Han Seo-yeon barely had time to react before darkness swallowed everything. The ground beneath her vanished, her body dropping into nothing as loose dirt and broken roots collapsed around her.

Then—

Impact.

A sharp pain shot through her shoulder as she hit the ground.

"Ah—!"

The air was knocked out of her lungs for a second. Her vision blurred, her ears ringing faintly as dust filled the space around her.

For a moment…

She couldn't move.

"…Seo-yeon."

Ji-hoon's voice.

Close.

Steady.

That alone pulled her back.

"I'm… okay…" she managed, though her body disagreed.

She pushed herself up slowly, wincing as pain spread through her side and ankle again. Her breathing was uneven, but she forced herself to stay focused.

Darkness surrounded them.

Not forest darkness.

Something deeper.

Closed.

"…Where are we?" she whispered.

Ji-hoon had already stood up, his eyes adjusting quickly as he scanned their surroundings. His instincts had taken over again, sharp and controlled despite everything.

"…Not outside anymore," he said quietly.

That wasn't comforting.

Seo-yeon looked around.

The air felt different.

Cooler.

Still.

The scent of damp earth was stronger here, mixed with something older… like time itself had settled into this place and never left.

Her fingers brushed against the ground.

Not soil.

Stone.

Her heart skipped.

"…This isn't natural."

Ji-hoon didn't respond immediately.

Then he reached into his pocket, pulling out his phone. The faint glow from the screen illuminated their surroundings just enough—

And Seo-yeon froze.

Walls.

Not rough cave walls.

Structured.

Built.

"…It's a tunnel," she whispered.

Not just any tunnel.

A hidden one.

Her chest tightened as realization slowly began to settle in.

"My father…"

Ji-hoon's jaw tightened slightly.

"He didn't just hide something," he said. "He built something."

The weight of that sank in immediately.

Seo-yeon stood slowly, ignoring the protest in her ankle.

"Then this…" she said, her voice quieter now, almost afraid to say it out loud.

"…is where he wanted us to come."

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Because they both knew what that meant.

Everything was about to change.

Ji-hoon stepped forward first.

"Stay close," he said.

This time—

She didn't argue.

She followed him.

Every step echoed softly against the stone floor, the sound traveling further than it should have. The tunnel stretched ahead, narrow but stable, lined with aged concrete and faint markings that looked almost… intentional.

Seo-yeon's eyes traced the walls carefully.

"These markings…" she murmured.

Ji-hoon glanced at them briefly. "Coordinates."

Her heart skipped.

"Coordinates to what?"

He didn't answer.

But she understood.

More secrets.

More layers.

They kept walking.

Deeper.

Further.

The tunnel sloped slightly downward, the air growing cooler with every step. The silence was suffocating, broken only by their breathing and the soft echo of footsteps.

Then—

A memory surfaced.

Suddenly.

Uninvited.

Her father's voice.

"Some things are hidden not to be forgotten… but to be found by the right person."

She stopped walking.

Ji-hoon noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

Her expression shifted slightly.

"…I've been here before."

His eyes narrowed.

"That's not possible."

"I don't remember it clearly," she admitted. "But… it feels familiar."

That feeling—

It wasn't imagination.

It was real.

Ji-hoon studied her for a moment, then nodded slightly.

"Then trust it."

She exhaled slowly.

And kept walking.

A few minutes later—

The tunnel opened.

Not into another path.

But into a room.

Seo-yeon's breath caught.

It wasn't large.

But it was deliberate.

Clean.

Organized.

A hidden chamber.

In the center—

A metal table.

And on it—

A single locked box.

Her heart started racing again.

"…That's it."

Ji-hoon stepped forward slowly, every movement cautious, controlled.

"Stay back," he said.

She didn't move.

Couldn't.

Her eyes were locked on the box.

"This is what he protected…" she whispered.

Ji-hoon stopped in front of it.

Then—

He pulled out the key.

The one Adrian had.

The one her father never let go of.

Both of them stared at it for a moment.

This was it.

The truth.

Finally.

"…Open it," Seo-yeon said softly.

Ji-hoon didn't hesitate this time.

He inserted the key.

A soft click echoed through the room.

Loud.

Final.

Then—

He opened it.

Seo-yeon stepped closer.

Her heart pounding.

Inside—

Not gold.

Not money.

Not documents.

Something else.

Smaller.

Simpler.

But somehow…

More important.

A file.

Sealed.

And a small device.

Ji-hoon picked up the file first.

Seo-yeon watched closely as he opened it.

His eyes moved across the first page.

And then—

He stopped.

Completely.

Her stomach dropped.

"…Ji-hoon?"

He didn't respond.

His expression had changed.

Not just serious.

Not just focused.

Something else.

Something deeper.

Shock.

Her heart started racing again.

"What is it?" she asked.

Slowly—

He handed it to her.

"…Read it."

Her hands trembled slightly as she took the file.

She looked down.

And began reading.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then—

They stopped.

Her breath caught.

"No…"

Her voice barely came out.

Her hands tightened around the paper.

"This… this can't be right…"

Her vision blurred slightly.

But she forced herself to keep reading.

Every word hit harder.

Every line worse than the last.

Her heart began to break—

Right there.

"…My father…"

Ji-hoon watched her carefully.

"Seo-yeon…"

She looked up at him.

Her eyes filled with something he hadn't seen before.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Something else.

Betrayal.

"…He lied to me."

Silence filled the room.

Heavy.

Unforgiving.

Then—

The device on the table suddenly lit up.

Both of them froze.

A soft mechanical sound followed.

Click.

The screen flickered.

Then—

A voice played.

Familiar.

Too familiar.

"Seo-yeon…"

Her breath stopped completely.

"…Dad?"

Han Min-jun's voice echoed through the room.

"If you're hearing this… then it means you found it."

Tears welled in her eyes instantly.

"…Why…?" she whispered.

The recording continued.

"I'm sorry."

Her heart shattered.

"I never wanted you to be involved in this. But you were the only one I could trust."

Ji-hoon's gaze darkened slightly.

The room felt smaller now.

Heavier.

Dangerous in a different way.

"There are things you don't know," the voice continued. "Things about me. About the company. About you."

Seo-yeon's breath became uneven.

"…About me?" she whispered.

And then—

The words came.

The ones that changed everything.

"You were never supposed to find out this way… but Seo-yeon…"

A pause.

A breath.

Then—

"You're not who you think you are."

Silence.

Complete.

Total.

Seo-yeon froze.

Her mind went blank.

"…What…?"

Ji-hoon didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Because he understood something immediately.

This—

Was bigger than everything they thought.

The recording crackled slightly.

Then—

Footsteps echoed faintly from the tunnel behind them.

Both of them turned instantly.

Ji-hoon's expression hardened.

"…We're not alone."

Seo-yeon's heart dropped.

Again.

Not now.

Not here.

Not after this.

A shadow stretched across the tunnel entrance.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Familiar.

A voice followed.

Calm.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

"You really thought you'd uncover everything… without me?"

Seo-yeon's chest tightened.

She knew that voice.

Slowly—

She turned.

And her eyes widened.
