Chapter 14 - Blood ties

The moment Han Ji-ho stepped into the chamber, everything shifted.

Han Seo-yeon felt it instantly. The air that had already been heavy with tension now felt almost suffocating. Her grip on the file tightened again, but this time, it wasn't just fear driving it.

It was confusion.

"Ji-ho…?" she called softly, her voice barely steady.

Her younger brother stood a few steps into the room, his chest rising and falling from the run. His eyes quickly scanned the space, taking in everything at once. The open box. The file in her hands. Kang Ji-hoon standing protectively beside her. And finally—

Lee Hyun-woo.

For a brief moment, Ji-ho's expression hardened.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

That alone made Seo-yeon's stomach drop.

"You shouldn't be here," Ji-ho said, his voice low but firm.

Seo-yeon frowned slightly. "Ji-ho… what do you mean? How did you even find this place?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, his gaze shifted back to her, softer now but still filled with something she couldn't quite place.

"I've been looking for you," he said. "You left without saying anything."

There was a hint of frustration in his voice, but beneath it… concern.

Real concern.

Her chest tightened slightly.

"I had to," she replied. "Things got complicated."

"That's one way to put it," Ji-ho muttered.

Ji-hoon stepped forward slightly, his presence calm but firm. "This isn't the place for explanations," he said. "We need to move."

Ji-ho's eyes flicked to him.

For a second, neither of them spoke.

There was tension there.

Unspoken.

Measured.

Like two people silently assessing each other.

"I know who you are," Ji-ho said finally.

Ji-hoon didn't react. "Then you know I'm not the problem right now."

Ji-ho's jaw tightened slightly, but he didn't argue.

Seo-yeon looked between them, her confusion growing. "Can someone explain what's going on?"

Before either of them could respond, Hyun-woo let out a quiet chuckle.

"This is getting interesting," he said. "Family reunions, hidden truths… it's almost touching."

Ji-ho's gaze snapped toward him instantly.

"Stay out of this," he said sharply.

Hyun-woo raised an eyebrow slightly. "You speak as if you have any authority here."

Ji-ho didn't back down. "I have enough."

The two of them locked eyes, tension rising again.

Seo-yeon felt her pulse quicken.

Something wasn't right.

Not just about the situation—

About Ji-ho.

He wasn't acting like himself.

Not completely.

"Ji-ho…" she said slowly, her voice cautious now. "What aren't you telling me?"

That question hit.

She saw it.

The hesitation.

Just for a second.

But it was there.

Ji-ho looked away briefly, exhaling under his breath before looking back at her.

"There's a lot you don't know," he admitted.

Her chest tightened.

"Then tell me."

He didn't answer immediately.

Ji-hoon stepped in, his tone firm. "Not here."

But Seo-yeon shook her head. "No. I'm tired of hearing that. Not here, not now, later… when exactly do I get the truth?"

Silence followed.

Even Hyun-woo watched with interest.

Ji-ho finally spoke.

"I knew about this place," he said.

The words landed heavily.

Seo-yeon blinked. "…What?"

"I didn't know exactly what was inside," he continued. "But I knew it existed. Dad told me enough to know it was important."

Her heart dropped.

"You knew… and you didn't tell me?"

Ji-ho's expression tightened. "I wasn't supposed to."

"That's not an answer!" she snapped.

"It's the truth," he shot back. "He made me promise."

The room went quiet again.

Seo-yeon felt something twist painfully inside her.

"Promise… what?"

Ji-ho looked at her, and this time, there was no hesitation.

"To keep you out of it."

Her breath caught.

"…Out of what?"

Before he could answer—

Movement.

Fast.

Sharp.

One of the men behind Ji-ho stepped forward suddenly, grabbing his arm and pulling him back.

Seo-yeon gasped. "Ji-ho!"

Everything exploded into motion.

Ji-ho reacted instantly, twisting out of the grip and shoving the man back hard. The chamber filled with noise—shouting, movement, tension snapping all at once.

"They're not with me!" Ji-ho shouted quickly.

Ji-hoon didn't hesitate.

He moved.

Fast.

Pulling Seo-yeon behind him as he stepped forward to block the approaching men.

"Stay behind me," he said firmly.

Seo-yeon's heart pounded violently. Everything was happening too fast again. She could barely keep up.

Hyun-woo stepped back slightly, watching the chaos unfold like it didn't concern him at all.

"Messy," he commented calmly.

Ji-ho fought off another attacker, breathing harder now. "We need to go!" he shouted.

Ji-hoon grabbed Seo-yeon's hand this time, not giving her a choice. "Move."

She followed.

Instinct.

Trust.

All of it pushing her forward.

The narrow space made movement difficult, bodies colliding, footsteps echoing loudly against the walls. The tension was suffocating, every second stretching longer than it should.

Seo-yeon glanced back briefly.

Ji-ho was still fighting.

Outnumbered.

Her chest tightened painfully.

"We can't leave him!" she said.

Ji-hoon didn't slow down. "We don't have a choice right now."

"I'm not leaving my brother!"

Her voice broke through everything.

Ji-hoon stopped.

Just for a second.

That second mattered.

He turned back.

Calculated.

Fast.

"…Stay here," he said.

Before she could argue—

He moved.

Back into the chaos.

Seo-yeon's heart jumped into her throat.

"Ji-hoon!"

But he was already gone.

The sounds of fighting intensified again. Echoes of struggle filled the chamber, making it impossible to tell what was happening clearly.

Seconds felt like minutes.

Her breathing became uneven.

"Come on…" she whispered. "Please…"

Then—

Movement.

Two figures.

Emerging from the chaos.

Ji-hoon.

And Ji-ho.

Both breathing heavily.

Both still standing.

Relief hit her instantly.

But it didn't last.

Because right behind them—

Hyun-woo stepped forward again.

Completely unharmed.

Completely calm.

As if none of that had mattered.

"Impressive," he said lightly. "But pointless."

Seo-yeon's stomach dropped.

More footsteps echoed behind him.

Even more this time.

They were being surrounded again.

Trapped.

No exit.

No time.

Ji-hoon stepped slightly in front of both of them now, his posture rigid, ready.

Ji-ho moved closer to Seo-yeon, his presence protective in a different way.

For a moment—

They stood like that.

Together.

Against everything.

Seo-yeon's heart pounded as she looked between them.

Her brother.

Ji-hoon.

The only two people she trusted right now.

"…What do we do?" she whispered.

Neither of them answered immediately.

Then—

Ji-ho spoke.

"We stop running."

Ji-hoon glanced at him.

"…And do what?"

Ji-ho's expression hardened.

"We end this."

Seo-yeon's breath caught.

Before she could ask what he meant—

Ji-ho stepped forward.

Toward Hyun-woo.

And said something that changed everything.

"…You've been looking for her," he said.

Hyun-woo's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Yes."

Ji-ho nodded once.

Then—

"She's not the only one you should be looking for."

Silence.

Heavy.

Confusing.

Seo-yeon's heart skipped.

"…Ji-ho?"

He didn't look at her.

His gaze stayed locked on Hyun-woo.

And then—

He said it.

"I know where the rest is."

Everything stopped.

Ji-hoon's eyes snapped toward him.

Seo-yeon froze.

Hyun-woo smiled slowly.

Interested.

Very interested.
