Chapter 19 - No way out

The sound of the door exploding inward echoed violently through the chamber, metal tearing against force as armed figures flooded into the room with precise, practiced coordination. The air shifted instantly, tension snapping into something far more dangerous. Han Seo-yeon's breath caught as she instinctively stepped back, her grip tightening around the envelope as if it were the only thing anchoring her to reality.

"Stay behind me," Kang Ji-hoon said sharply, already moving, his body positioning itself between her and the incoming threat without hesitation.

The intruders didn't waste time. Their movements were controlled, synchronized, each step deliberate as they spread out, cutting off every visible exit. Black-clad, masked, and armed—they weren't here to intimidate. They were here to take control.

Seo-yeon's pulse hammered in her ears. "Who are they?" she whispered urgently.

Before Ji-hoon could respond, the man who had been speaking to them earlier exhaled slowly, his expression darkening. "They're early," he muttered. "That's… not good."

Ji-hoon's eyes flicked toward him briefly. "Start explaining," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "Now."

One of the intruders stepped forward, their boots echoing against the cold floor. Their presence alone carried authority, the others subtly adjusting around them as if recognizing a leader.

"Well," the masked figure said calmly, their voice distorted but unmistakably confident, "this saves us time."

Seo-yeon's stomach dropped.

The leader's gaze landed directly on her.

"Han Seo-yeon," they continued, almost casually. "You've caused quite a lot of trouble."

Ji-hoon stepped forward slightly, blocking her from their line of sight. "You've got the wrong idea," he said coolly. "We're not the ones causing problems."

The leader tilted their head slightly. "No," they replied. "You're the problem."

The room fell into a dangerous silence.

Seo-yeon swallowed hard, forcing herself to speak. "What do you want from me?" she asked, her voice steadier than she felt.

The leader didn't hesitate.

"You," they said simply.

Her heart skipped.

Ji-hoon's jaw tightened. "That's not happening."

A faint chuckle came from behind the mask. "You're in no position to negotiate," the leader replied. "You're surrounded, outnumbered, and standing in a place you were never meant to find."

Ji-hoon didn't move. "Try me."

The tension snapped tighter.

Seo-yeon could feel it building—the inevitable clash, the moment everything would explode into violence. Her mind raced, trying to process everything at once. The envelope. The truth. The man beside her. The enemies in front of her.

And one terrifying realization—

They hadn't come randomly.

They knew.

The leader took another step forward. "Hand over the envelope," they said. "And come with us quietly. No one gets hurt."

Seo-yeon's grip tightened instinctively.

"No," she said.

The word came out before she could stop it.

Firm.

Certain.

Everyone froze for a fraction of a second.

Ji-hoon glanced at her briefly, something flickering in his eyes—not surprise, but recognition. He understood. She wasn't backing down.

The leader tilted their head again. "That wasn't a suggestion," they said, their tone colder now.

"I don't care," Seo-yeon replied, her voice shaking slightly but not breaking. "I'm not going anywhere with you."

A quiet breath escaped the man who had been guiding them. "You really are his daughter," he murmured under his breath.

Ji-hoon's voice cut in. "Last chance," he said, his tone deadly calm. "Walk away."

For a moment—

Nothing happened.

Then—

The leader raised a hand.

That was all the signal needed.

Everything erupted.

The intruders moved at once, fast and coordinated. Ji-hoon reacted instantly, pulling Seo-yeon back as one of them lunged forward. The clash of movement echoed sharply in the confined space, footsteps, grunts, and the sound of impact filling the chamber.

"Stay close!" Ji-hoon ordered, his voice sharp as he blocked an incoming strike and pushed the attacker back.

Seo-yeon stumbled slightly but steadied herself, her heart racing out of control. This wasn't like before. This wasn't just tension.

This was a fight.

Another intruder moved toward her, faster than she expected. She barely had time to react before—

A hand grabbed her arm.

Not rough.

But firm.

She turned sharply—

It was the man.

"Move," he said quickly. "If you stay here, you'll get caught in the crossfire."

"I'm not leaving him!" she shot back, trying to pull away.

"You won't help him by standing still," he replied. "Trust me."

Her hesitation cost her a second too long.

Another intruder closed in.

Ji-hoon saw it instantly.

"Seo-yeon!" he called, his voice cutting through everything.

Their eyes met.

For a split second—

Time slowed.

"Go!" he shouted.

That was enough.

She moved.

The man pulled her toward the side passage, the same direction they had come from, but everything felt different now. The space that had once felt like an escape now felt like a trap closing in.

Behind them, the sounds of fighting intensified.

Seo-yeon's chest tightened painfully.

"…Ji-hoon," she whispered.

"He'll hold them," the man said quickly. "But not forever."

They reached the narrow passage, but just as they turned—

A figure dropped down in front of them.

Blocking the exit.

Seo-yeon froze.

The masked intruder stood still, their presence colder than the others, more controlled.

"You're not leaving," they said.

The man beside her sighed softly. "Of course not," he muttered. "That would be too easy."

Seo-yeon's grip tightened around the envelope again, her pulse pounding violently.

"What do we do?" she whispered.

The man glanced at her briefly, then back at the intruder.

"…We stop running," he said quietly.

Behind them, footsteps approached fast.

From the front, the masked figure stepped closer.

Trapped.

Completely.

Seo-yeon's heart raced as she looked between them, her mind spinning with possibilities, none of them good.

Then—

Something clicked.

Not in the room.

In her mind.

Her father's voice.

"If you're ever cornered… don't look for the exit."

Her breath caught.

"…Create one."

Her eyes widened slightly.

Ji-hoon's voice echoed faintly from behind, still fighting.

The man beside her glanced at her. "What are you thinking?"

Seo-yeon tightened her grip on the envelope.

"…I think," she said slowly, her voice steadier now, "we've been playing this wrong."

The masked intruder paused.

"What do you mean?" the man asked.

Seo-yeon looked up.

Straight at the intruder.

Then she did something unexpected.

She stepped forward.

Ji-hoon's voice echoed again from behind, sharper this time. "Seo-yeon, don't—"

But she didn't stop.

"If you want me," she said, her voice clear despite the chaos around them, "then stop all of this."

Silence.

Even the intruder hesitated.

"What are you doing?" the man beside her muttered urgently.

She didn't answer him.

Her eyes stayed locked on the masked figure.

"I'll come with you," she continued.

Ji-hoon's voice snapped instantly from behind. "No."

But she didn't look back.

Not this time.

The masked figure tilted their head slightly. "Smart," they said. "You're finally understanding."

Seo-yeon's chest tightened.

"I have one condition," she added.

The figure paused.

"…Speak."

Her fingers tightened around the envelope.

"He comes with me," she said.

Silence.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

The masked figure's gaze shifted past her—toward Ji-hoon, still fighting in the distance.

Then back to her.

"…You're negotiating," they said.

"I'm deciding," she replied.

Ji-hoon's voice came again, closer this time. "Seo-yeon, don't do this."

Her heart clenched.

But she didn't turn.

Not yet.

The masked figure took a slow step forward.

Then—

They laughed softly.

"…You're more interesting than we thought."

Seo-yeon's pulse pounded.

"…But no."

Everything dropped.

Her breath caught.

Before she could react—

The figure moved.

Fast.

Faster than she expected.

A hand shot forward—

Grabbing her wrist.

The envelope slipped slightly in her grip.

Ji-hoon's voice roared from behind—

"Let her go!"

But it was too late.

The masked figure pulled her forward.

And whispered—

"You don't get to choose."
