Chapter 20 - The moment he snapped

Everything happened too fast.

Han Seo-yeon barely had time to react before the masked figure's grip tightened around her wrist, pulling her forward with controlled force. The envelope nearly slipped from her hand, and for a split second, panic surged through her chest as she tried to hold onto it.

"Let go of me!" she struggled, her voice breaking through the chaos.

The masked figure didn't respond. Their grip only tightened.

Behind her, something shifted.

Something dangerous.

Kang Ji-hoon stopped holding back.

"Take one more step," his voice came—low, sharp, and laced with something far darker than before, "and you won't leave this place alive."

The entire room seemed to pause.

Even the intruders hesitated.

Seo-yeon felt it.

That change.

Ji-hoon had been controlled up until now—calculated, precise, restrained.

But this?

This was different.

The masked figure turned slightly, their head angling just enough to acknowledge him. "You're in no position to make threats," they said calmly.

Ji-hoon didn't respond immediately.

Instead—

He moved.

Fast.

Faster than before.

The nearest intruder barely had time to react before Ji-hoon struck, disarming him in one clean motion and sending him crashing to the ground. The movement was brutal, efficient, and completely devoid of hesitation.

Seo-yeon's breath caught.

She had seen him fight before.

But not like this.

Not with this level of intensity.

"Ji-hoon—!" she started.

"Don't move," he cut her off sharply, not even looking at her. "Stay exactly where you are."

The masked figure tightened their hold on her, pulling her slightly closer. "You're making this worse," they said.

"No," Ji-hoon replied coldly, his eyes finally locking onto them. "You already did."

There was no warning.

No buildup.

Ji-hoon lunged.

The room exploded into motion again.

The masked figure reacted instantly, dragging Seo-yeon back to avoid the attack. The movement threw her off balance, and she stumbled slightly, barely managing to stay on her feet.

"Stop using me as a shield!" she snapped, struggling against their grip.

"You're not a shield," the figure replied. "You're the objective."

Ji-hoon closed the distance again, his movements sharp, relentless. Two more intruders tried to intercept him, but he pushed through them with sheer force, his focus locked entirely on Seo-yeon.

Nothing else mattered.

Not the numbers.

Not the risk.

Just her.

"Let her go!" he demanded.

The masked figure stepped back, calculating. "You're not thinking clearly," they said. "That's dangerous for someone like you."

Ji-hoon's lips curved slightly—but there was no humor in it. "I don't need to think," he said. "I just need you to let go."

Seo-yeon's heart pounded violently.

This was spiraling.

Fast.

"Ji-hoon, stop!" she called out. "This isn't going to work!"

But he didn't listen.

Or maybe—

He couldn't.

The distance between them closed again, and this time, Ji-hoon didn't hesitate. He grabbed the masked figure's arm, trying to force them to release her.

For a brief second—

It worked.

The grip loosened.

Seo-yeon felt it.

Freedom.

But just as quickly—

Everything shifted.

Another intruder moved in from the side, faster than she expected. A sharp movement—something cold pressed briefly against her arm—

Then—

A sting.

Her breath caught.

"…What…?" she whispered.

Ji-hoon saw it instantly.

His expression changed.

Completely.

"What did you do?" his voice dropped, dangerously quiet.

The masked figure stepped back, releasing her fully this time.

Seo-yeon staggered.

Her vision blurred slightly.

The room tilted.

"I…" she tried to speak, but her voice felt distant, like it wasn't hers anymore.

Ji-hoon caught her before she hit the ground.

"Seo-yeon," he said, his voice tight, controlled—but barely. "Look at me."

She tried.

She really did.

But her body wasn't responding the way it should.

"I feel…" she whispered, her grip weak against his shirt. "…dizzy…"

His jaw clenched.

"What did you inject her with?" he demanded, his eyes snapping back to the masked figure.

"A precaution," they replied calmly. "She'll be fine—as long as you don't interfere."

Ji-hoon's gaze darkened instantly. "You think I'm going to let you walk out of here with her after that?"

"You don't have a choice," the figure said.

Seo-yeon's fingers tightened weakly against him.

"…Ji-hoon…"

Her voice was softer now.

Fading.

He looked back at her immediately.

"I'm here," he said, his tone shifting, softer—but still urgent. "Stay with me."

Her vision blurred more.

His face was still there.

But fading.

"You… promised…" she murmured weakly.

His chest tightened.

"I know," he said quietly. "And I don't break promises."

But even as he said it—

He knew.

This wasn't something he could stop easily.

The masked figure stepped forward again. "Time's up," they said. "Hand her over."

Ji-hoon didn't move.

Didn't even look at them.

His arms tightened around her slightly.

"No."

The word came out low.

Final.

The room stilled again.

The intruders shifted, ready.

The man who had helped them earlier watched silently, his expression unreadable now.

"You're running out of options," the masked figure said.

Ji-hoon slowly lifted his head.

And this time—

There was no restraint left in his eyes.

"Then I'll make new ones," he said.

Seo-yeon felt his grip tighten just slightly—

Then suddenly—

He moved.

Not toward them.

But sideways.

Fast.

Breaking through the nearest opening before anyone could react.

"What—" one of the intruders started.

"Stop him!" the masked leader ordered immediately.

But Ji-hoon was already moving.

Carrying her.

Holding her close.

Ignoring everything else.

Seo-yeon's head rested weakly against his shoulder, her vision fading in and out.

"…Ji… hoon…" she whispered faintly.

"I've got you," he said again, his voice low, steady despite everything. "Just stay with me."

Footsteps thundered behind them.

Shouts echoed.

The chase had started.

But Ji-hoon didn't slow down.

Wouldn't slow down.

Because this time—

It wasn't about winning.

It was about getting her out alive.

The corridor stretched ahead, dark and uncertain, but he didn't hesitate. Every turn, every step, every decision was instant, driven by instinct and something far stronger.

Behind them—

The masked figure watched.

Then spoke quietly.

"Seal the exits."

Seo-yeon's fading consciousness caught only fragments of sound.

But one thing was clear—

They weren't going to escape that easily.
