Chapter 26 - Taken beyond reach

The moment Han Seo-yeon crossed the edge of the courtyard, it felt like something inside her quietly snapped.

Not loudly. Not dramatically.

Just… a silent break.

The kind that didn't make noise—but changed everything.

The air outside felt colder, heavier, as if the world itself had shifted the moment she stepped away from Kang Ji-hoon. Behind her, the chaos of the courtyard faded into distant echoes, swallowed by the quiet hum of engines and the low, controlled movements of the people surrounding her.

Black vehicles waited in a straight line beyond the gates, their presence cold and deliberate. Their engines were already running, soft vibrations humming through the ground beneath her feet. The tinted windows revealed nothing, reflecting only a distorted version of her own figure back at her.

Alone.

Even though she wasn't.

"Keep moving," the man beside her said calmly, his hand tightening slightly around her arm.

Seo-yeon forced her legs to cooperate. They felt weak, unsteady, like they didn't fully belong to her anymore. The drug still lingered in her system, slowing her reactions, dulling her strength—but not her mind.

Her mind was painfully awake.

"…I can walk," she said quietly, pulling her arm just slightly.

The man didn't let go. "You're barely standing."

"I'm still walking," she replied, her voice steadier than she felt.

He glanced at her briefly, then released her arm—but stayed close enough that she could feel his presence, like a shadow she couldn't shake off.

She didn't look back.

Not once.

Because she knew—

If she saw Ji-hoon standing there…

If she saw his face—

She wouldn't be able to keep going.

And she had already made her decision.

Behind her—

Kang Ji-hoon stood still.

Too still.

The courtyard felt empty now, despite the lingering presence of scattered enemies and broken tension. The space where Seo-yeon had stood just moments ago seemed… wrong.

Like something important had been torn out of place.

"…Boss…"

Park Daniel's voice came carefully, as if testing whether Ji-hoon would even respond.

He didn't.

Ji-hoon's eyes were still fixed on the gate.

On the place she disappeared.

"…We can track them," Daniel continued, stepping closer. "But we need to move now if we want any chance of catching up."

Still—

Nothing.

Ji-hoon's breathing remained steady, but his silence was heavier than any outburst could have been.

Daniel hesitated.

"…You should've stopped her."

The voice came from the side.

Weak.

Strained.

But sharp enough to cut through everything.

Ji-hoon turned slowly.

The wounded man—the one who had been shot—was still alive, barely holding on as he leaned against the cracked stone wall. Blood had soaked through his clothes, dark and spreading, but his eyes were still clear.

Still aware.

Still watching.

"…You talk too much," Ji-hoon said coldly.

The man smirked faintly, even as he winced from the pain. "…And you hesitate too much."

That was enough.

Ji-hoon moved.

In a single step, he closed the distance, grabbing the man by the collar and slamming him back against the wall with controlled force. Dust fell from the cracks behind him.

"Say that again," Ji-hoon said, his voice low.

Dangerously low.

The man coughed, blood touching the corner of his lips—but he didn't lose that faint, irritating smile.

"…You let her go," he repeated.

Ji-hoon's grip tightened.

For a moment—

Just a moment—

It looked like he might actually lose control.

But he didn't.

"…Where are they taking her?" he asked instead.

Straight to the point.

The man studied his face, as if searching for something.

"…Even if I tell you," he said slowly, "you won't get there in time."

Ji-hoon leaned closer, his eyes dark and unwavering.

"Try me."

Silence stretched between them.

Then—

A quiet chuckle.

"…There it is," the man murmured. "That version of you… that's the one they're afraid of."

Ji-hoon didn't react.

Didn't care.

"Location."

The word was sharper this time.

More final.

The man exhaled slowly, his strength clearly fading. "…Underground facility," he said. "Hidden sector… erased from official records years ago."

Ji-hoon's eyes narrowed. "Where."

The man hesitated this time.

Not out of defiance.

But something else.

"…If you go there," he said quietly, "you won't come back the same."

Ji-hoon's expression didn't change.

"…I'm not planning to."

For a second—

The man laughed.

A dry, painful sound.

"…Figures," he muttered.

Ji-hoon released him, letting him fall back against the wall.

"Daniel."

"Yes, boss."

"Find it," Ji-hoon said. "Every hidden sector. Every abandoned record. I want it all."

Daniel nodded immediately. "Already on it."

Ji-hoon turned toward the gates again.

This time—

He didn't hesitate.

Inside the vehicle—

Seo-yeon sat quietly.

Too quietly.

The interior was dim, the tinted windows blocking out most of the outside world. The only sound was the steady hum of the engine and the faint vibration of movement beneath her.

Her hands rested on her lap.

Still holding the document.

Still gripping it like it was the only thing keeping her grounded.

Her eyes stared down at the words again.

Prototype.

Active.

Her chest tightened.

"…What does it mean?" she asked softly.

The man sitting across from her leaned back slightly, watching her.

"You'll understand soon."

"That's not an answer."

"It's enough for now."

She looked up at him, her gaze sharper this time.

"…You expect me to just sit here and wait?"

"I expect you to survive," he replied calmly.

That irritated her.

"…You keep saying that," she said. "Like I don't have a choice."

He didn't even hesitate.

"You don't."

Silence filled the car again.

Heavy.

Pressing.

Seo-yeon turned her head slightly, looking at her reflection in the window. It barely looked like her anymore.

Pale.

Shaken.

But not broken.

Not yet.

"…Ji-hoon is coming," she said suddenly.

The man raised an eyebrow slightly. "Confident."

"He won't stop," she continued. "You don't understand him."

A faint smile appeared on the man's face.

"…No," he said quietly. "I understand him better than you think."

That made her pause.

"…What does that mean?"

He leaned forward slightly, his voice dropping just enough to feel heavier.

"It means… by the time he reaches you…"

His eyes darkened slightly.

"…it won't matter anymore."

Her heart skipped.

But she forced herself not to react.

Instead, she tightened her grip on the document.

"…We'll see."

The vehicle slowed.

Then stopped.

Seo-yeon's heartbeat picked up again.

The door opened.

Cold air rushed in.

She stepped out slowly—

And froze.

The place in front of her looked like nothing.

An abandoned industrial site.

Broken walls.

Rust-covered beams.

Silence stretching endlessly.

"…This place…" she whispered.

The man stepped beside her. "Looks empty, right?"

She nodded slowly.

"…That's the idea."

He walked forward.

She followed.

Because she had no choice.

But also—

Because she needed answers.

And then—

The ground beneath her feet shifted.

A low mechanical sound echoed as a hidden platform revealed itself, sliding open silently.

Seo-yeon's breath caught.

"…What… is this place?"

The man glanced back at her.

And for the first time—

His expression turned serious.

"Welcome," he said quietly,

"…to where your life actually begins."

Seo-yeon's heart pounded violently.

And as she stepped forward—

Descending into the unknown—

She realized one thing with terrifying clarity.

This wasn't the end of her story.

It was the beginning.
