Chapter 27 - The place beneath the truth

The descent felt longer than it should have.

Han Seo-yeon stood on the metal platform as it lowered slowly into the darkness beneath the abandoned structure, the faint mechanical hum echoing around her like a distant warning. The light from above faded inch by inch, swallowed by the cold, artificial glow that flickered to life below.

She didn't speak.

Didn't move.

Her fingers tightened slightly around the document still in her hand, as if letting go of it would somehow make everything more real.

Prototype.

The word echoed in her mind again.

And again.

And again.

"…You're thinking too much," the man beside her said calmly, his voice cutting through the silence.

Seo-yeon didn't look at him.

"…You're not thinking enough," she replied quietly.

The platform continued to descend.

The deeper they went, the more the air changed—sterile, controlled, unnatural. It smelled faintly of metal and something else she couldn't quite place… something clinical.

Like a hospital.

Or worse.

"You'll get your answers," the man said.

She finally turned her head slightly, her gaze sharp despite the lingering weakness in her body. "…You keep saying that. But all I've gotten so far are half-truths and warnings."

"That's because full truths tend to break people," he replied.

She held his gaze for a moment.

"…Then let me decide if I break."

For a brief second—

He didn't respond.

And that silence said more than anything else.

The platform stopped.

A soft click echoed as it locked into place.

Before them—

A corridor stretched out.

Bright.

Spotless.

Cold.

It was the complete opposite of the abandoned ruin above. White walls, polished floors, soft overhead lighting—it looked like a high-end research facility, untouched by time.

Hidden.

Perfectly hidden.

Seo-yeon stepped forward slowly, her footsteps echoing faintly against the floor.

"…This is what you're hiding under all that?" she asked.

"Not hiding," the man corrected. "Protecting."

"From who?"

He glanced at her.

"…From people like him."

She didn't need to ask who he meant.

Ji-hoon.

Her chest tightened slightly—but she pushed the feeling down.

Now wasn't the time.

As they walked deeper into the facility, doors slid open automatically, one after another, responding to the man's presence. Behind some of them, she caught glimpses—rooms filled with equipment, monitors, glass chambers, and things she couldn't fully understand at a glance.

Her steps slowed.

"…What is this place?" she asked again, more quietly this time.

The man didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he stopped in front of a large glass wall.

"…Look," he said.

Seo-yeon hesitated for a second—then stepped closer.

And froze.

Inside the room beyond the glass—

People.

Dozens of them.

Some standing.

Some sitting.

Some… not moving at all.

Each one connected to machines, wires trailing from their arms, their backs, their necks. Screens above them displayed data—numbers, signals, readings she couldn't fully process.

Her breath caught.

"…What… is this…?" she whispered.

The man's voice came quietly beside her.

"…This is where you come from."

Her heart stopped.

"…No," she said immediately, shaking her head. "No, that's not possible. I wasn't—"

"You were," he interrupted calmly.

She turned to him, eyes wide. "I had a life. I have a father. A family—"

"A constructed life," he said.

The words hit harder than anything else so far.

"…You're lying," she whispered.

"I'm not."

Her chest tightened painfully.

"…Then explain it," she demanded. "Explain how I'm standing here if what you're saying is true."

He studied her for a moment.

Then—

He stepped closer to the glass.

"…Every person you see here," he said, "is part of a program."

Seo-yeon's breathing grew uneven.

"…What kind of program?"

He looked at her.

"A human enhancement program."

Silence.

Heavy.

Crushing.

"…No…" she whispered again.

"They're called prototypes," he continued. "Test subjects designed to exceed normal human limits. Strength. Intelligence. Adaptability."

Her grip on the document tightened.

"…And me?" she asked, her voice barely steady.

His eyes didn't waver.

"You're the only one who succeeded."

The world tilted.

Her knees nearly gave out—but she forced herself to stay standing.

"…That's not possible," she said weakly. "I'm just… me…"

"Are you?" he asked quietly.

She couldn't answer.

Because now—

Doubt had already taken root.

Elsewhere—

Far above ground—

Kang Ji-hoon stood in silence as Daniel finished speaking.

"…We found it," Daniel said, lowering his device. "It's off-grid. Completely hidden. No official records—but the coordinates match an old industrial zone."

Ji-hoon's eyes darkened.

"Send it."

Daniel hesitated. "…Boss… if what we're seeing is accurate…"

"Say it."

"…It's not just a facility," Daniel said carefully. "It's a lab."

Ji-hoon didn't react outwardly.

But the air around him changed.

"Prepare the team," he said.

"…You're going in directly?" Daniel asked.

Ji-hoon looked up.

And this time—

There was no restraint left.

"…No," he said quietly.

Then his voice dropped.

"…I'm tearing it down."

Back inside the facility—

Seo-yeon stepped away from the glass, her breathing uneven, her thoughts spiraling out of control.

"…If I'm a prototype…" she said slowly, "…then why am I different?"

The man watched her closely.

"…Because you weren't meant to be controlled."

She frowned. "…What does that mean?"

"It means," he said, "you adapted."

"To what?"

"To everything."

Her mind raced.

"…Then why are they still here?" she asked, gesturing toward the room behind the glass. "Why are they still… like that?"

He didn't answer immediately.

And that hesitation—

Scared her.

"…Because they failed," he said finally.

The word echoed.

Failed.

Seo-yeon's chest tightened.

"…And if I fail?" she asked quietly.

He looked at her.

And this time—

There was no softness in his expression.

"…Then you won't be any different."

Silence.

Cold.

Final.

Seo-yeon looked back at the room.

At the people.

At the machines.

And for the first time—

Fear truly settled in her chest.

Not fear of them.

Not fear of the situation.

But fear of herself.

"…What do you want from me?" she asked.

The man stepped closer.

"…To wake you up."

Her heart pounded.

"…And if I don't want to?"

He smiled faintly.

"…You don't have that option."

Before she could respond—

An alarm suddenly blared through the facility.

Loud.

Sharp.

Urgent.

Red lights flashed across the walls.

Seo-yeon flinched. "What—?"

The man's expression changed instantly.

"…He's here."

Her breath caught.

"…Ji-hoon…?"

The man exhaled slowly.

"…Faster than expected."

The alarms grew louder.

Footsteps echoed in the distance.

The entire facility shifted into chaos.

Seo-yeon's heart began to race—not with fear this time—

But something else.

Hope.
