CHAPTER 47: THE SMOKING RUINS
The hospital smell was making me sick. It was a mix of medicine and bad coffee.
I was sitting in the care waiting room. My fingers dug into my jacket so hard my nails turned white.
Everything felt cold around me.
Luca was sleeping on the chair next to me. His face was still wet from crying. He held his dragon toy tightly even in his sleep, refusing to let it go.
I looked at him and my chest hurt.
A nurse walked by quietly.
I looked up immediately, hoping it was Dominic.
It was not him.
I rubbed my face and stood up again. It was the third time in ten minutes. I could not sit still. Every second felt heavier than the last.
Then the double doors opened.
A doctor in blue scrubs walked out.
I stood up so fast my vision blurred for a second.
"Dominic," I said quickly. "Please tell me he is alive."
The doctor sighed softly as he removed his mask.
"Mr. Voss is lucky," he said. "The truck hit his car at high speed."
I closed my eyes briefly.
