Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Test

I didn't sleep.

Not even for a second.

Kai stayed.

That alone should have terrified me more than anything else—but it didn't. What terrified me was the silence she brought with her. It spread through my room like something alive, swallowing every whisper, every stray thought that usually filled my head. For the first time in years, my mind wasn't crowded.

It should have felt peaceful.

Instead, it felt like standing on the edge of something I didn't understand.

Kai sat by the window, watching the sky slowly shift from night to morning. She didn't move much. Didn't speak unless necessary. It was like she didn't belong to time the way the rest of us did.

I sat on my bed, phone in my hand, staring at the last message.

She doesn't belong in any future where you survive.

My chest tightened.

"Are you going to keep staring at that?" Kai asked without looking at me.

"You want me to ignore it?" I shot back.

"Yes."

"That's not an answer."

She finally turned her head slightly, her gaze meeting mine. "It's the only one that matters."

I exhaled sharply and stood up, pacing the room. "You expect me to just trust you? You show up out of nowhere, tell me you're not from my timeline, that you see outcomes, and somehow I'm just supposed to believe you're not the problem?"

Kai didn't respond immediately.

That annoyed me more.

"Say something," I demanded.

"You're still alive," she said simply.

I stopped pacing.

"What does that mean?"

"It means," she continued, "if I was the problem, you wouldn't be here right now."

That answer didn't make me feel better.

Before I could respond, my phone buzzed.

The sound cut through the silence like a blade.

Kai's eyes flicked to it instantly.

"Don't," she said.

I ignored her.

I opened the message.

Unknown: Good. You're both awake.

A chill ran down my spine.

Me: What do you want?

The reply came instantly.

Unknown: To fix your mistake.

My grip tightened.

Me: I didn't make a mistake.

There was a pause this time.

Long enough to make my heart pound harder.

Then—

Unknown: Then let's test that.

I frowned.

Me: What are you talking about?

Another message appeared.

Unknown: Go to school today.

I blinked.

Me: That's it?

Unknown: No.

My chest tightened.

Unknown: There will be a moment. Around 11:20 AM.

My pulse quickened.

Unknown: When it happens, you have two choices.

I swallowed.

Me: What moment?

The typing dots appeared.

Stopped.

Appeared again.

Unknown: You'll know.

I clenched my jaw.

Me: That's not helpful.

Unknown: It's not supposed to be.

A cold feeling settled in my stomach.

Unknown: This is where we find out if you can actually change anything.

I stared at the screen.

A test.

That's what this was.

A test to see if I could change the future.

Or if everything was already decided.

"Delete it," Kai said.

I looked up.

Her voice was sharper now.

More serious than before.

"No," I said.

"You don't understand what he's doing," she replied.

"Then explain it," I snapped.

A pause.

Then—

"He's narrowing your choices," she said.

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means he's guiding you into a specific outcome," she continued. "The more you follow his instructions, the less freedom you actually have."

I looked back at my phone.

Then back at her.

"And what about you?" I asked. "Aren't you doing the same thing?"

For a brief second—

She didn't answer.

That was all I needed.

"You are," I said quietly.

Kai's gaze hardened.

"I'm trying to keep you alive."

"So is he," I shot back.

"No," she said immediately. "He's trying to control what you become."

My chest tightened.

Before I could respond—

My phone buzzed again.

Unknown: She's lying.

I laughed bitterly.

"Of course you'd say that," I muttered.

Unknown: Ask her this.

My eyes narrowed slightly.

Unknown: If she sees outcomes… then why is she still here?

I froze.

Slowly—

I looked up at Kai.

She was already watching me.

Like she knew exactly what the message said.

"Why are you still here?" I asked.

Silence filled the room.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Kai didn't look away.

"I told you," she said quietly. "I can't change everything."

"That's not what I asked," I replied.

Another pause.

Then—

"Because this is the only outcome where you don't die immediately," she said.

My breath caught.

"Immediately?" I repeated.

Her gaze didn't waver.

"Yes."

A chill ran through me.

"So I still die?" I asked.

Silence.

That was my answer.

I let out a slow breath, running a hand through my hair.

"This is insane," I muttered. "Both of you are telling me I'm going to die like it's just… normal."

"It is," Kai said.

I looked at her sharply.

"For you?" I asked.

"For people like you," she corrected.

My chest tightened.

Before I could ask what that meant—

My phone buzzed again.

Unknown: 11:20.

Unknown: Don't forget.

I stared at the screen.

Then slowly—

I locked it.

"I'm going," I said.

Kai didn't react.

"Of course you are," she replied.

I grabbed my bag.

My hands weren't shaking anymore.

That scared me more than anything.

"I need answers," I said.

"You won't get them like this," Kai warned.

"Then I'll find another way."

I walked toward the door.

But just as I reached it—

Her voice stopped me.

"If you follow his instructions," she said,

"you're not choosing."

My hand tightened on the handle.

"And if I listen to you?" I asked without turning.

Silence.

Then—

"You're choosing uncertainty."

I let out a quiet breath.

Then I opened the door.

"Good," I said.

And stepped out.

Because right now—

Uncertainty felt more honest than control.

And at 11:20 AM—

I was going to find out exactly what kind of choice this really was.
