Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: The Thing Listening Back

I couldn't breathe properly.

Not because of the noise.

Because of what was inside it.

That third presence—it wasn't gone. It lingered beneath everything, like something hiding under water, watching, waiting. I could still hear people's thoughts, still separate voices, still chaos. But underneath all of it… something was listening back.

Kunle stepped closer. "You feel it now," he said, his voice pressing directly into my head again.

"Stop doing that," I snapped.

"You mean this?" he replied, louder inside my mind than outside. "Or this?"

The hallway noise flickered.

Not disappeared.

Shifted.

Like someone had adjusted the volume of reality itself.

My head throbbed.

"That's not normal," I said through clenched teeth.

"It is for me," Kunle replied calmly.

I turned to Kai. "Say something."

She didn't look at me. Her eyes were locked on Kunle. "He's stabilizing faster than expected."

"Stop talking like this is an experiment," I snapped.

"It is," Kunle said before she could respond.

My chest tightened.

"You're treating me like a problem to solve," I added.

"You are a problem," Kai said.

That hit harder than I expected.

Before I could respond, Kunle laughed softly. "See? Even she knows."

I ignored him. "Explain the third presence."

Kai hesitated. That alone made my stomach drop.

"You felt it when he touched you earlier," she said. "And again just now."

"That doesn't explain what it is."

"It's not a what," she replied. "It's a result."

My head pounded. "Of what?"

"Of overlap."

The word meant nothing.

I shook my head. "Explain properly."

"You hear thoughts," she said. "He now hears and organizes them. When your ability and his interact…" she paused slightly, "…something forms between them."

My chest tightened. "Between us?"

"Yes."

I looked at Kunle. He didn't deny it.

"That's not possible," I said.

"You keep saying that," he replied. "It keeps happening anyway."

My phone buzzed.

The sound made my stomach drop instantly.

Unknown: You're feeling it now.

My fingers tightened.

Me: What is it?

Unknown: Feedback.

I frowned.

Me: From what?

There was a delay.

Longer than usual.

Then—

Unknown: From everything you're connected to.

A cold chill spread through me.

Me: That doesn't make sense.

Unknown: It will.

I clenched my jaw. "I'm tired of that answer."

Kai glanced at me briefly. "You're not supposed to understand it yet."

"Then when?" I demanded.

She didn't respond.

Kunle did.

"When it's too late," he said.

I turned sharply. "Stop talking like you know everything."

"I don't know everything," he said calmly. "Just more than you."

"That doesn't mean you're right."

"No," he agreed. "But it means I'm ahead."

My chest tightened.

That third presence pulsed again.

Stronger this time.

Not a thought.

Not a voice.

More like… pressure.

Like something pressing against the inside of my head.

I flinched.

"Did you feel that?" I asked.

"Yes," Kai said.

Kunle smiled. "It's getting clearer."

My stomach dropped. "Clearer?"

"To me," he said.

Of course.

"Then explain it," I said.

He tilted his head slightly. "Why would I do that?"

Anger flared. "Because this is my problem too."

"No," he corrected. "This is your fault."

The words hit hard.

I didn't respond.

Because I couldn't.

My phone buzzed again.

Unknown: He's right.

My breath caught.

Me: Don't start.

Unknown: You created this.

My grip tightened.

Me: Then tell me how to stop it.

A pause.

Then—

Unknown: You can't stop it.

My chest tightened painfully.

Me: Then what do I do?

The reply came slower this time.

Unknown: Limit it.

I frowned. "Limit how?"

No answer.

I looked up at Kai. "What does that mean?"

She didn't hesitate this time. "Distance."

I stiffened. "From him?"

"Yes."

Kunle laughed softly. "That won't work."

I ignored him. "Why?"

"Because it's already formed," Kai said.

My stomach dropped.

"Then why suggest it?"

"Because it slows it down," she replied.

"Slows what down?" I asked.

Silence.

That was answer enough.

I ran a hand through my hair, trying to think.

"This doesn't make sense," I muttered. "None of this makes sense."

"It doesn't have to," Kunle said.

"It's still happening," Kai finished.

I exhaled sharply. "I hate both of you."

Neither of them reacted.

That somehow made it worse.

Another pulse.

Stronger this time.

My vision blurred slightly.

"What is that?" I whispered.

Kunle's eyes lit up slightly. "You feel that too?"

"That's not a good thing," I said.

"It is for me," he replied.

Of course it was.

I steadied myself. "It feels like something is… pushing back."

Kai went still.

That reaction told me everything.

"What?" I demanded. "What does that mean?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"It means it's not passive anymore," she said.

My chest tightened. "It?"

"The connection," she clarified.

I shook my head. "Connections don't push back."

"This one does."

Another pulse.

Sharper.

Clearer.

And this time—

I heard it.

Not thoughts.

Not words.

But something close.

Like a pattern trying to become a voice.

My breath caught.

"You heard that," Kunle said quietly.

I didn't deny it.

Because I couldn't.

"What is it trying to do?" I asked.

Kai didn't respond.

Kunle did.

"Talk," he said.

My heart skipped.

"That's not possible."

"It is now," he replied.

My phone buzzed again.

Unknown: It's forming faster than expected.

My chest tightened.

Me: What is?

The reply came instantly.

Unknown: The third voice.

My fingers trembled.

Me: What happens when it forms?

There was a long pause.

Long enough to make my heart pound harder.

Then—

Unknown: You lose control.

A cold chill ran down my spine.

I looked up.

At Kunle.

At Kai.

At everything around me.

And for the first time—

I realized this wasn't just about surviving anymore.

It wasn't even about the future.

It was about something new.

Something none of them fully understood.

And somehow—

I was at the center of it.

Another pulse.

Stronger.

Closer.

And this time—

It almost sounded like a word.

I staggered slightly.

Kunle smiled.

Kai stepped forward.

And I—

I realized something I couldn't ignore anymore.

Whatever this thing was—

It wasn't just listening.

It was learning.
