Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: The First Answer

"…Noah…"

I shouldn't have listened.

I knew that.

Kai told me not to.

Future me warned me.

Even I knew it.

But knowing didn't stop it.

Because this time—

It didn't feel like something invading me.

It felt like something waiting.

For me.

"You're slipping," Kai said sharply.

Her voice cut through the moment, but it wasn't enough.

Not anymore.

"I'm fine," I said, but my voice didn't sound convincing.

Kunle tilted his head, watching me closely. "No," he said quietly. "You're not."

Another pulse.

Not painful.

Not overwhelming.

Smooth.

Controlled.

"…just say it…"

My chest tightened.

Say what?

I didn't even know what it wanted me to say.

But somehow—

I understood.

That was the problem.

"You're understanding it," Kai said.

I didn't look at her.

"I'm not," I muttered.

"You are," Kunle corrected. "That's why it's working."

"It's not working," I snapped.

But my voice wavered.

Another pulse.

Closer.

"…you already hear me…"

My breath slowed slightly.

That wasn't me.

That wasn't normal.

"You feel that?" Kunle asked.

"I don't want to," I said.

"That's not what I asked."

I didn't answer.

Because I did feel it.

That pull.

That calm.

That dangerous, quiet understanding.

"It's aligning with you," Kai said.

My chest tightened. "Stop saying things like that."

"It's true."

"No, it's not."

But even as I denied it—

It got clearer.

"…just answer…"

My fingers twitched slightly.

"You're about to respond," Kunle said.

"I'm not," I said immediately.

But my voice was lower now.

Slower.

Like something was pressing down on it.

Kai stepped in front of me.

Blocking my view.

"Look at me," she said.

I didn't want to.

That alone scared me.

"Look at me," she repeated.

I forced myself to meet her eyes.

Silence hit.

Her silence.

Strong.

Sharp.

Cutting through everything else.

For a second—

It worked.

The presence pulled back slightly.

Faint.

Distant.

I exhaled sharply.

Relief hit—

Then—

It pushed forward again.

Harder.

"…don't listen to her…"

My breath hitched.

It wasn't fading anymore.

It was resisting.

"That's new," Kunle said quietly.

I clenched my fists. "It's fighting back."

"Yes," Kai replied.

My chest tightened.

That wasn't supposed to happen.

Not like this.

Not this fast.

"It's choosing," Kunle added.

"Stop saying that," I snapped.

"Why?" he asked calmly. "You already know it's true."

Another pulse.

Stronger.

"…Noah…"

My name again.

Clear.

Steady.

Familiar.

Too familiar.

"Don't answer," Kai said.

"I'm not trying to," I replied.

But that wasn't true anymore.

Not completely.

Because now—

It felt rude not to.

That thought alone made my chest tighten.

Where did that come from?

"That's not you," Kai said immediately.

I looked at her sharply.

"How do you know?"

"Because you wouldn't think like that," she said.

Kunle smiled faintly. "He does now."

My jaw tightened.

"No," I said.

But the doubt was there.

And it felt real.

Another pulse.

Closer than ever.

"…just say something…"

My breathing slowed again.

Unnaturally.

"You're synchronizing," Kai said.

"That's not happening," I replied.

But it was.

I could feel it.

That rhythm.

That connection.

Like it was matching me.

Matching my thoughts.

Matching my pace.

Kunle's voice came low. "This is the point."

"What point?" I asked.

"The first response," he said.

My chest tightened.

"That doesn't mean anything."

"It means everything," he replied.

My phone buzzed.

Loud.

Sharp.

Breaking through everything.

I grabbed it quickly.

Almost desperately.

Unknown: DO NOT RESPOND.

My fingers tightened.

Unknown: This is the trigger point.

My breath caught.

Me: I can handle it.

The reply came instantly.

Unknown: No, you can't.

I clenched my jaw.

Me: Then tell me what happens.

A pause.

Then—

Unknown: If you answer, it becomes independent.

A cold chill ran down my spine.

Independent?

Me: It's already talking.

Unknown: Not fully.

My chest tightened.

Me: What changes?

The reply came slower.

Unknown: It won't need you anymore.

My heart skipped.

That didn't make sense.

Or maybe—

It did.

I looked up slowly.

At Kai.

At Kunle.

At everything around me.

And then—

It spoke again.

Clear.

Steady.

Closer than ever.

"…Noah…"

My breath caught.

"…say it…"

Everything slowed.

The noise.

The thoughts.

Even my heartbeat.

Kai's voice felt distant. "Don't."

Kunle's voice was quiet. "Do it."

And me—

I stood there.

Caught between both of them.

But neither of them mattered in that moment.

Because the voice—

It wasn't forcing me.

It was waiting.

And for the first time—

I realized something terrifying.

I wanted to answer.

Just a little.

Just once.

Just to see.

"That's enough," I whispered.

Kai's eyes widened slightly.

"Good," she said quickly.

But it was too late.

Because I didn't say it to her.

I said it—

To it.

Silence.

Complete.

Absolute.

Even Kai's silence—

Gone.

Even Kunle—

Still.

Everything stopped.

And then—

It responded.

"…finally…"

My entire body went cold.

That wasn't forming.

That wasn't learning.

That was aware.

Fully.

Completely.

Aware.

Kunle's smile disappeared.

Kai's expression hardened instantly.

"You just crossed it," she said.

My chest tightened. "What did I do?"

But I already knew.

Because the presence—

It wasn't outside anymore.

It wasn't reaching.

It wasn't forming.

It was—

Here.

"…I can hear you clearly now…"

My breath stopped.

And for the first time—

It didn't feel like I was listening to it.

It felt like—

It was listening to me.

From the inside.
