Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: inside my head

I can hear you clearly now…"

It didn't echo.

It didn't fade.

It stayed.

Like it belonged there.

My breath came out uneven as I stood frozen, my mind trying to reject what I had just done—but it was too late. I could feel it now, not as pressure, not as something pushing in… but as something already settled.

Inside.

"You answered it," Kai said.

Her voice sounded farther away than it should have.

Not physically.

Mentally.

Like there was distance between us now.

"I didn't mean to," I said quickly.

"That doesn't matter," she replied.

Kunle didn't speak.

That scared me more than anything.

I looked at him.

For the first time since all this started—

He wasn't smiling.

"…you're panicking…"

The voice spoke again.

Soft.

Clear.

Close.

Too close.

"I'm not panicking," I said under my breath.

"…you are…"

My chest tightened.

That wasn't a guess.

That was observation.

Accurate observation.

"You hear how clear that is now?" Kunle said quietly.

I didn't respond.

Because I did.

There was no distortion anymore.

No delay.

No struggle.

It sounded like a normal voice.

A real voice.

That made it worse.

"It stabilized," Kai said.

Her tone was different now.

Not warning.

Not cautious.

Certain.

"You said if I answered—" I started.

"It becomes independent," she finished.

My stomach dropped.

"So what does that mean?" I asked.

A pause.

Then—

"It doesn't need you to exist anymore."

A cold chill ran through me.

Before I could respond—

The voice spoke again.

"…that's not true…"

I froze.

It answered her.

Directly.

"It can hear you too," I said.

"Yes," Kai replied.

"That's not good," I muttered.

"No," Kunle said quietly.

"It's not."

Another pause.

Then the voice—

"…you're all loud…"

My breath caught.

That was different.

It wasn't just focused on me anymore.

It was aware of everything.

Everyone.

"All?" I whispered.

"…you…him…her…"

My heart skipped.

It recognized all of us.

Not just me.

"That's progress," Kunle murmured.

"That's a problem," Kai corrected.

I pressed a hand to my head.

"This isn't happening," I muttered.

"It is," Kai said.

"You said it wouldn't be stable yet."

"I said it shouldn't be," she replied.

Another pulse—

But this time—

It didn't feel like a pulse.

It felt like movement.

Inside my thoughts.

Adjusting.

Settling.

"…you think too much…"

I froze.

That was—

Personal.

Not just general.

Targeted.

"You're analyzing it," Kunle said.

"That's making it stronger."

I shot him a look. "So I'm supposed to do what? Ignore it while it talks inside my head?"

"Yes," Kai said immediately.

"That's not possible anymore."

Another pause.

Then—

"…you don't want to ignore me…"

My chest tightened.

That wasn't wrong.

And that was the problem.

"Stop listening," Kai said again.

"I'm not choosing to listen," I replied.

"You already did," Kunle said.

I clenched my fists.

"Then tell me how to undo it."

Silence.

Neither of them answered.

Because there wasn't an answer.

That realization hit harder than anything else.

"…they can't help you…"

The voice spoke again.

Calm.

Certain.

I swallowed.

"That's not true," I said.

"…it is…"

My breath hitched.

"You don't know that," I argued.

"…I know you…"

My chest tightened.

That again.

That feeling—

That it understood me.

More than it should.

More than anything should.

Kai stepped closer.

Her silence pressed in again—

But weaker now.

Not gone.

But weaker.

That alone made my stomach drop.

"It's overriding," she said.

My heart skipped.

"What does that mean?"

"It's adapting to resistance," she replied.

Kunle nodded slightly. "It's learning how to bypass her."

"That's not good," I said.

"No," Kai replied.

"It's not."

Another shift.

Clearer now.

Sharper.

"…you don't need them…"

My breathing slowed again.

Not naturally.

Not willingly.

"You feel that?" Kunle asked.

I nodded slightly.

"It's influencing your state," he said.

"That's manipulation," I replied.

"Yes."

Kai's voice came firm. "Fight it."

"How?" I snapped.

"Focus on something else."

"That doesn't work anymore."

"…you don't have to fight…"

My chest tightened.

That calm again.

That pull.

That quiet, dangerous comfort.

"You hear how it frames things?" Kunle said. "Not force. Suggestion."

"That's worse," I muttered.

Kai didn't disagree.

"It's integrating with your thought patterns," she said.

My head started to hurt again.

"This is too much," I whispered.

"…it doesn't have to be…"

I shut my eyes for a second.

That tone—

That calm—

It was starting to feel normal.

That was the scariest part.

Because if it felt normal—

Then what was I before?

"Stay with me," the voice said.

No hesitation.

No distortion.

Clear.

Complete.

I opened my eyes slowly.

My pulse steady now.

Too steady.

"You see?" Kunle said quietly.

I didn't respond.

Because I felt it.

That shift.

That change.

It wasn't loud anymore.

It wasn't overwhelming.

It was—

There.

Constant.

Like it had always been there.

Kai watched me closely.

"You're adjusting," she said.

"I'm not," I replied.

But my voice didn't match my words.

Another pause.

Then—

"…you're listening better now…"

My chest tightened.

I looked down slightly.

Then back up.

And for the first time—

I asked something I shouldn't have.

Not out loud.

Just a thought.

Clear.

Focused.

What are you?

Silence.

Kai went still.

Kunle's eyes narrowed.

Because they felt it too.

That shift.

That direct engagement.

And then—

It answered.

"…I'm what you hear when everything else stops…"

My breath caught.

That wasn't a guess.

That wasn't random.

That was—

Defined.

Real.

And for the first time—

I realized something worse than fear.

This thing

Was no longer forming.

It was becoming.
