Chapter 16 - Hunter vs Believer

The dark subway station was entirely silent, save for the faint, sickening sizzle of the corrupted node dissolving into ash on the tracks. But the suffocating pressure in the air hadn't lifted. If anything, it was growing heavier, pressing against their eardrums like a physical weight.

In the corner of Jin-Woo's vision, the blue interface violently flickered into red.

[Node B: Approaching] [Distance: 120m → 80m → 50m] [Threat Level: Unknown]

Everyone felt it. The hairs on Seo-Ah's arms stood up. She tightened her grip on her bloodstained bat, taking a slow step backward. "That's not a monster..." she whispered, her breath visible in the suddenly freezing air.

Tae-Soo pushed his glasses up, his hands shaking slightly as he stared into the pitch-black tunnel ahead. "No... it's worse."

The rhythmic, unhurried sound of footsteps echoed from the darkness. Clack. Clack. Clack. They weren't the erratic, dragging steps of a corrupted thrall, nor the synchronized march of the Execution Choir. This was the confident, deliberate stride of something that knew exactly what it was hunting.

A figure emerged from the shadows.

He looked entirely human. He wore dark, practical clothing, slightly torn at the shoulder, revealing a shallow, bleeding cut that he completely ignored. In his right hand, he casually twirled a long, matte-black combat knife. His eyes were dead, reflecting no light from the flickering station bulbs. He carried none of the suffocating, god-like arrogance of the man in the suit from the plaza. He simply exuded the raw, mechanical aura of an apex predator.

The man stopped a dozen paces away. He didn't look at Seo-Ah or Tae-Soo. His dead eyes locked instantly onto Jin-Woo.

"So..." the stranger said, his voice a low, gravelly rasp. "You're the irregular one."

[System Warning] [Unknown Authority Detected] [Classification: Predator Type]

Jin-Woo felt a sharp ache in his chest. Beside him, Min-Jae let out a quiet whimper, clutching his head. The stranger's mere presence was acting like a signal jammer, interfering with Jin-Woo's fragile network.

"You build connections," the stranger noted, his eyes drifting to the faint, ethereal tether linking Jin-Woo to Min-Jae. "A dangerous habit. Weakness spreads."

"You hunt alone," Jin-Woo replied, his voice steady despite the burning in his exhausted muscles.

The stranger stopped twirling the knife. "I don't need believers. I don't build. I consume what I need, and I burn the rest."

Tae-Soo took a slow half-step behind Jin-Woo, his voice barely a breath. "He's like the one from the plaza... a domination type."

The stranger tilted his head. "You're inefficient."

There was no battle cry. No shifting of stance.

One second the stranger was standing twelve meters away; the next, he was directly in front of them. The speed was incomprehensible.

Seo-Ah reacted purely on adrenaline, swinging her bat with a desperate scream. The stranger didn't even look at her. He casually swatted the heavy metal bat aside with the flat of his blade. The sheer kinetic force of the parry sent Seo-Ah spinning, crashing hard onto the tiled floor.

Tae-Soo dove desperately to the right, narrowly avoiding a kick that shattered the concrete pillar behind him.

Min-Jae didn't move. He was completely frozen, his eyes wide with absolute terror.

Jin-Woo stepped into the gap, raising his guard just in time to block the handle of the stranger's knife from caving in his throat. The impact rattled Jin-Woo's teeth.

[System Calculation] [Survival Probability: 18%]

Eighteen percent. It was a massive leap from the miserable three percent against the man in the suit. It meant Jin-Woo was growing. But eighteen percent was still a death sentence.

The stranger's oppressive aura flooded the station. Min-Jae collapsed onto his hands and knees, screaming. The boy's fragile Sub-Authority link was being violently crushed by the Predator's sheer density.

"It hurts... it's too loud!" Min-Jae sobbed, clawing at his own ears, hallucinating under the weight of the opposing system.

The stranger's dead eyes shifted downward. A dark, hollow curiosity flashed in his expression. "Ah... a broken node. You gave power to a leaking vessel."

The stranger pivoted on his heel, completely ignoring Jin-Woo, and raised his blade, aiming directly for the back of Min-Jae's neck. It was an execution.

Jin-Woo didn't have time to attack. He didn't have time to pull Min-Jae away.

Gritting his teeth until he tasted blood, Jin-Woo slammed his hand against his own chest and forcibly ripped his network wide open, flooding the tethers with every ounce of raw, unrefined divinity he had left.

[Warning: Forced Network Output][Critical Risk: Authority Collapse]

A blinding, chaotic shockwave of blue energy erupted from Jin-Woo, transferring instantly into Seo-Ah and Min-Jae.

Seo-Ah, still on the floor, felt her muscles violently lock with unnatural strength. Min-Jae's screaming abruptly stopped as his eyes rolled back, glowing with pure, unstable static.

The sudden, explosive surge of linked energy created a physical barrier of pressure in the air. The stranger's descending blade struck the invisible wall of faith and halted.

For the very first time, the Predator stopped.

He looked at his blade, vibrating against the dense blue energy, then looked back at Jin-Woo, who was bleeding from his nose, his entire body shaking as he held the network together by pure willpower.

The stranger slowly lowered his knife. The dead look in his eyes was replaced by a faint, chilling spark of respect.

"...Interesting."

The oppressive, blood-red aura vanished in an instant. The stranger took a step back, slipping the knife into his jacket. He didn't look angry that his kill was interrupted. He looked intrigued.

"You're not prey," the stranger said quietly, turning his back to them and walking toward the dark tunnel. He paused, looking over his shoulder. "Yet."

The faint spark of intrigue vanished from his face, replaced entirely by the cold abyss of a killer.

"Next time... I won't be curious."

He disappeared into the shadows as quietly as he had arrived.

The blue energy shattered. Jin-Woo dropped to one knee, coughing violently as the backlash tore through his nervous system.

"We would've died..." Seo-Ah whispered, staring at the empty tunnel, her hands trembling so badly she couldn't pick up her bat.

Tae-Soo pushed himself off the floor, his face pale. "He wasn't even serious. He was testing us."

Beside them, Min-Jae slumped over, completely unconscious, his body burned out from the forced output.

Jin-Woo remained silent, staring at the drops of his own blood on the broken tiles. For the first time since he accepted the system, he felt truly, fundamentally inadequate. He hadn't won. He was just allowed to live.

In the corner of his vision, the system delivered a cold, final verdict.

[New Threat Registered][Authority Type: Predator]

And then, a second line pulsed in a slow, rhythmic red.

[Your Network Has Been Marked]

Jin-Woo wiped the blood from his chin, his eyes darkening.

Next time... we won't survive.
